Dr. Gloria Contreras (1947-) was recruited to work at the University of North Texas in 1987 because of her strong background in multicultural and social studies education. Her passion was teaching social studies with a global perspective, and furthering the place of women and minorities in education, teaching and scholarship. In 1989, she was appointed the first Director of the Office of Minority Affairs (now the Office of Multicultural Affairs), where she was tasked to create a plan to recruit and retain minority students and faculty. Contreras co-authored some of the leading K-6 social studies textbooks published by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, served as the Executive Editor of The Social Science, a national journal for educators, and was elected Director of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. [TXSSAR Arlington Chapter re-organization charter]

Photograph of a framed certificate establishing the TXSSAR Arlington Chapter as a chartered chapter. The certificate reads: "Know Ye all men by these Presents that pursuant to the Constitution and By Laws of the National and Texas Societies of the Sons of the American Revolution[,] the aforesaid State Society has certified the Arlington Chapter, number seven as a Chapter of the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution by resolution of the said State Society passed on this 11th day of January 1994[,] Given under the Seal of this Society, this 25th day of February in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety Four."
