Probing the Absolute Mass Scale of Neutrinos (open access)

Probing the Absolute Mass Scale of Neutrinos

The experimental efforts of the Neutrino Physics Group at MIT center primarily around the exploration of neutrino mass and its significance within the context of nuclear physics, particle physics, and cosmology. The group has played a prominent role in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, a neutrino experiment dedicated to measure neutrino oscillations from 8B neutrinos created in the sun. The group is now focusing its efforts in the measurement of the neutrino mass directly via the use of tritium beta decay. The MIT group has primary responsibilities in the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino mass experiment, expected to begin data taking by 2013. Specifically, the MIT group is responsible for the design and development of the global Monte Carlo framework to be used by the KATRIN collaboration, as well as responsibilities directly associated with the construction of the focal plane detector. In addition, the MIT group is sponsoring a new research endeavor for neutrino mass measurements, known as Project 8, to push beyond the limitations of current neutrino mass experiments.

IMPACTS OF SMALL COLUMN ION EXCHANGE STREAMS ON DWPF GLASS FORMULATION KT07-SERIES GLASS COMPOSITIONS (open access)

IMPACTS OF SMALL COLUMN ION EXCHANGE STREAMS ON DWPF GLASS FORMULATION KT07-SERIES GLASS COMPOSITIONS

This report is the third in a series of studies of the impacts of the addition of Crystalline Silicotitanate (CST) and Monosodium Titanate (MST) from the Small Column Ion Exchange (SCIX) process on the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) glass waste form and the applicability of the DWPF process control models. MST from the Salt Waste Processing Facility is also considered in the study. The KT07-series glasses were selected to evaluate any potential impacts of noble metals on their properties and performance. The glasses characterized thus far for the SCIX study have not included noble metals since they are not typically tracked in sludge batch composition projections. However, noble metals can act as nucleation sites in glass melts, leading to enhanced crystallization. This crystallization can potentially influence the properties and performance of the glass, such as chemical durability, viscosity, and liquidus temperature. The noble metals Ag, Pd, Rh, and Ru were added to the KT07-series glasses in concentrations based on recent measurements of Sludge Batch 6, which was considered to contain a high concentration of noble metals. The KT04-series glasses were used as the baseline compositions. After fabrication, the glasses were characterized to determine their homogeneity, chemical composition, durability, and …

The Z Charmoniumlike Mesons (open access)

The Z Charmoniumlike Mesons

A brief review of the experimental situation concerning the electrically charged charmoniumlike meson candidates, Z{sup -}, is presented. The Belle Collaboration reported peaks in the {psi}{prime}{pi}{sup -} and {chi}{sub c1}{pi}{sup -} invariant mass distributions in B {yields} {psi}{prime}{pi}{sup -}K and B {yields} {chi}{sub c1}{pi}{sup -}K, respectively. If these peaks are meson resonances, they would have a minimal quark substructure of c{bar c}d{bar u} and be unmistakeably exotic. However, even though the Belle signals have more than 5{sigma} statistical significance, the experimental situation remains uncertain in that none of these peaks have yet been confirmed by other experiments. An analysis by the BABAR Collaboration of B {yields} {psi}{prime}{pi}{sup -}K neither confirms nor contradicts the Belle claim for the Z(4430){sup -} {yields} {psi}{prime}{pi}{sup -}. In the BABAR analysis, B {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup -}K decays were also studied, and no evidence for Z(4430){sup -} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup -} was found. In this paper, we review and compare Belle and BABAR results on searches for charged charmonium-like states.

Multipacting Simulation on Half Wave Resonantor for Beta 0.53 (open access)

Multipacting Simulation on Half Wave Resonantor for Beta 0.53

In the driver linac of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), multipacting is an issue of concern for the superconducting resonators, which must accelerate the ion beams from 0.3 MeV per nucleon to 200 MeV per nucleon. While most of the multipacting bands can be conditioned and eliminated with RF, hard multipacting barriers may prevent the resonators from reaching the design voltage. Using the ACE3P code suite, multipacting bands can be computed and analysed with the Track3P module to identify potential problems in the resonator design. This paper will present simulation results for multipacting in half-wave resonators for the FRIB driver linac. The driver linac for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) will use superconducting cavities to accelerate the heavy-ion beam to a minimum energy of 200 MeV/u. The first part of the driver linac utilizes two types of Quarter Wave Resonator (QWR) accelerating cavities operating at a frequency of 80.5 MHz to increase the beam energy to 17.5 MeV/u. The second part of the driver linac uses two types of Half Wave Resonators (HWR) cavities operating at a frequency of 322 MHz, with {beta} = 0.285 and 0.53 respectively to accelerate the beam to the final energy …

Time-resolved pump-probe experiments at the LCLS (open access)

Time-resolved pump-probe experiments at the LCLS

The first time-resolved x-ray/optical pump-probe experiments at the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) used a combination of feedback methods and post-analysis binning techniques to synchronize an ultrafast optical laser to the linac-based x-ray laser. Transient molecular nitrogen alignment revival features were resolved in time-dependent x-ray-induced fragmentation spectra. These alignment features were used to find the temporal overlap of the pump and probe pulses. The strong-field dissociation of x-ray generated quasi-bound molecular dications was used to establish the residual timing jitter. This analysis shows that the relative arrival time of the Ti:Sapphire laser and the x-ray pulses had a distribution with a standard deviation of approximately 120 fs. The largest contribution to the jitter noise spectrum was the locking of the laser oscillator to the reference RF of the accelerator, which suggests that simple technical improvements could reduce the jitter to better than 50 fs.

Chinese Tire Imports: Section 421 Safeguards and the World Trade Organization (WTO)

This report covers the Chinese-filed World Trade Organization (WTO) complaint against the U.S. over Section 421 of the Trade Acts of 1941, which has been renewed several times since. Section 421 authorizes the President to impose safeguards—that is, temporary measures such as import surcharges or quotas—on Chinese goods if domestic market disruption is found.

Dispute Settlement in the World Trade Organization (WTO): An Overview

This report describes the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes (DSU), which is the World Trade Organization's (WTO) means of resolving disputes arising under WTO agreements. The report includes criticisms of certain flaws in the DSU, as well as WTO Members' suggestions for improvement. The report also describes the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), which represents the United States in WTO disputes. Also discussed are pieces of legislation that dictate procedures for specifically the United States in instances of WTO disputes.

War Powers Resolution: Presidential Compliance (open access)

War Powers Resolution: Presidential Compliance

Two separate but closely related issues confront Congress each time the President introduces armed forces into a situation abroad that conceivably could lead to their involvement in hostilities. One issue concerns the division of war powers between the President and Congress, whether the use of armed forces falls within the purview of the congressional power to declare war and the War Powers Resolution. The other issue is whether or not Congress concurs in the wisdom of the action. A longer-term issue is whether the War Powers Resolution is an appropriate and effective means of assuring congressional participation in actions that might get the United States involved in war.
