The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Acencion Fernandez. Fernandez, a Texas farm boy born in 1924, was drafted when he was 18 years old. He was based in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was assigned to the USS LCI-80 where he served as a loader on a 40-inch gun. At the Mariana Islands of Saipan and Tinian and at Iwo Jima, he was involved in strafing the beaches to enable Marines to land. Later his LCI landed Marines on Okinawa. He briefly mentions the presence of Navajo code talkers on the ship.

What are the lower limits for reduction of steam production without reducing electrical power production below demand? 2. In establishing the cost savings to convert Eielson AFB to warm stand-by, what portion of that cost savings is depended on reduced utility operations and maintenance? 3. What is the plan to maintain jet fuel storage levels and turnover to assure quality aviation fuels where there are reduced flying hours during months without Cope Thunder exercises? Tundra lakes on the North Slope, Alaska, are an important resource for energy development and petroleum field operations. A majority of exploration activities, pipeline maintenance, and restoration activities take place on winter ice roads that depend on water availability at key times of the winter operating season. These same lakes provide important fisheries and ecosystem functions. In particular, overwintering habitat for fish is one important management concern. This study focused on the evaluation of winter water use in the current field operating areas to provide a better understanding of the current water use practices. It found that under the current water use practices, there were no measurable negative effects of winter pumping on the lakes studied and current water use management practices were appropriately conservative. The study did find many areas where improvements in the understanding of tundra lake hydrology and water usage would benefit industry, management agencies, and the protection of fisheries and ecosystems.

Department of Defense Clearinghouse Response: Testimony by the Eielson Community regarding "Executive Summary" assertations by Generals Gamble and Hamilton that the Secretary of Defense deviated substantially from all BRAC selection criteria (1-8), an explanaiton on why the AF recommended keeping most of Eielson as COPE THUNDER central; and why Eielson's existing force structure better served Air Force Operational and Training requirements as distributed by the Secretary's recommendations.

The U.S. Forest Service established the first protected "wilderness area" under its own discretion in 1924. In 1964, the Wilderness Act established the National Wilderness Preservation System, reserved to Congress the authority to designate wilderness areas, and directed the Secretaries of Agriculture and of the Interior to review certain lands for their wilderness potential. The Act also designated 54 wilderness areas with 9 million acres of Forest Service land. Congress began expanding the Wilderness System in 1968, and today, there are 631 wilderness areas, totalling nearly 104 million acres, in 44 States.
