FERMI@Elettra: A Seeded Harmonic Cascade FEL for EUV and Soft X-Rays (open access)

FERMI@Elettra: A Seeded Harmonic Cascade FEL for EUV and Soft X-Rays

We describe the machine layout and major performance parameters for the FERMI FEL project funded for construction at Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy, within the next five years. The project will be the first user facility based on seeded harmonic cascade FEL's, providing controlled, high peak-power pulses. With a high-brightness rf photocathode gun, and using the existing 1.2 GeV S-band linac, the facility will provide tunable output over a range from {approx}100 nm to {approx}10 nm, with pulse duration from 40 fs to {approx} 1ps, peak power {approx}GW, and with fully variable output polarization. Initially, two FEL cascades are planned; a single-stage harmonic generation to operate > 40 nm, and a two-stage cascade operating from {approx}40 nm to {approx}10 nm or shorter wavelength. The output is spatially and temporally coherent, with peak power in the GW range. Lasers provide modulation to the electron beam, as well as driving the photocathode and other systems, and the facility will integrate laser systems with the accelerator infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art optical timing system providing synchronization of rf signals, lasers, and x-ray pulses. Major systems and overall facility layout are described, and key performance parameters summarized.

Experimental Tests of the GDH and Other Sum Rules at SLAC (open access)

Experimental Tests of the GDH and Other Sum Rules at SLAC

Recent measurements from SLAC of the polarized nucleon structure functions g{sub 1} and g{sub 2} have been used to experimentally test the Bjorken, Ellis-Jaffe, Burkhardt-Cottingham, and Efremov-Leader-Teryaev sum rules. In the future, the SLAC E159 experiment will extend structure function measurements using real photons to 40 GeV, enabling a definitive test of the high energy convergence of the GDH sum rule for both proton and deuteron targets.

District of Columbia: FY2006 Appropriations

This report is a guide to the regular appropriations bills that Congress considers each year. It is designed to supplement the information provided by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the District of Columbia and the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, the Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, the District of Columbia, the Executive Office of the President, and Independent Agencies. It summarizes the status of the bill, its scope, major issues, funding levels, and related congressional activity, and is updated as events warrant.

Spatially Continuous Mixed Simplified P2-P1 Solutions for Multidimensional Geometries (open access)

Spatially Continuous Mixed Simplified P2-P1 Solutions for Multidimensional Geometries

The simplified P{sub N} (SP{sub N}) angular approximation to the neutron transport equation has received renewed interest in recent years [1-3]. The even-order simplified P{sub 2} angular approximation has been shown to yield improved accuracy over the P{sub 1} (diffusion) angular approximation for problems in which the P{sub 1} approximation is reasonably accurate [1]. In particular, integral quantities such as reaction rates and eigenvalues computed by the SP{sub 2} approximation are typically more accurate. The SP{sub 2} scalar flux spatial distributions are also often more accurate than the P{sub 1} distributions away from material interfaces and source discontinuities. However, the SP{sub 2} scalar flux distributions are spatially discontinuous at material interfaces and source discontinuities. These spatial discontinuities are unphysical, aesthetically displeasing, and can lead to large inaccuracies near interfaces. Brantley [4] has recently investigated combining the P{sub 1} and P{sub 2} angular approximations in planar geometry to eliminate the discontinuities in the P{sub 2} scalar flux distributions near material interfaces and source discontinuities. In essence, the P{sub 1} angular approximation is used at material interfaces and source discontinuities to obtain spatially continuous scalar flux distributions; the P{sub 2} angular approximation is utilized elsewhere to take advantage of its improved accuracy. …

Novel Aspects of Hard Diffraction in QCD (open access)

Novel Aspects of Hard Diffraction in QCD

Initial- and final-state interactions from gluon-exchange, normally neglected in the parton model have a profound effect in QCD hard-scattering reactions, leading to leading-twist single-spin asymmetries, diffractive deep inelastic scattering, diffractive hard hadronic reactions, and nuclear shadowing and antishadowing--leading-twist physics not incorporated in the light-front wavefunctions of the target computed in isolation. I also discuss the use of diffraction to materialize the Fock states of a hadronic projectile and test QCD color transparency.

Single-Spin Asymmetries and Transversity in QCD

Initial- and final-state interactions from gluon exchange, normally neglected in the parton model, have a profound effect in QCD hard-scattering reactions, leading to leading-twist single-spin asymmetries, diffractive deep inelastic scattering, diffractive hard hadronic reactions, as well as nuclear shadowing and antishadowing-leading-twist physics not incorporated in the light-front wavefunctions of the target computed in isolation. The physics of such processes thus require the understanding of QCD at the amplitude level; in particular, the physics of spin requires an understanding of the phase structure of final-state and initial-state interactions, as well as the structure of the basic wavefunctions of hadrons themselves. I also discuss transversity in exclusive channels, including how one can use single-spin asymmetries to determine the relative phases of the timelike baryon form factors, as well as the anomalous physics of the normal-normal spin-spin correlation observed in large-angle proton-proton elastic scattering. As an illustration of the utility of light-front wavefunctions, the transversity distribution of a single electron is computed, as defined from its two-particle QED quantum fluctuations.
