AnisWave2D: User's Guide to the 2d Anisotropic Finite-DifferenceCode (open access)

AnisWave2D: User's Guide to the 2d Anisotropic Finite-DifferenceCode

This document describes a parallel finite-difference code for modeling wave propagation in 2D, fully anisotropic materials. The code utilizes a mesh refinement scheme to improve computational efficiency. Mesh refinement allows the grid spacing to be tailored to the velocity model, so that fine grid spacing can be used in low velocity zones where the seismic wavelength is short, and coarse grid spacing can be used in zones with higher material velocities. Over-sampling of the seismic wavefield in high velocity zones is therefore avoided. The code has been implemented to run in parallel over multiple processors and allows large-scale models and models with large velocity contrasts to be simulated with ease.

Climate Change Legislation in the 108th Congress (open access)

Climate Change Legislation in the 108th Congress

Climate change and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been an issue in the 108th Congress, as they have been over the past decade. Bills directly addressing climate change issues range from those focused primarily on climate change research (H.R. 1578 and S. 1164) to comprehensive emissions cap and trading programs for all six greenhouse gases (S. 139 and H.R. 4067). This report briefly discusses basic concepts on which these bills are based, and compares major provisions of the bills in each of the following categories: climate change research, GHG reporting and registries, and cap and trade programs.

Cyclic Polarization Behavior of Low Carbon Steel above Simulated High Level Radioactive Waste (open access)

Cyclic Polarization Behavior of Low Carbon Steel above Simulated High Level Radioactive Waste

Corrosion in the vapor space and at the liquid/air interface of the Department of Energy (DOE) high level waste (HLW) tanks have emerged as potentially active corrosion mechanisms. Controls on the solution chemistry are in place to preclude the initiation and propagation of further nitrate induced pitting and stress corrosion cracking. However, recent experience has shown that steel not in contact with the bulk waste solution but exposed to the vapor space above the bulk waste and the liquid/air interface may be vulnerable to pitting or stress corrosion cracking. Experimentation was performed to determine the cyclic polarization behavior of ASTM A537 low carbon steel, the materials of construction of the tanks, in the vapor space above simulated waste solution. The results suggest steel in the vapor space is protected provided the bulk solution issufficiently inhibited.

Data Sciences Technology for Homeland Security Information Management and Knowledge Discovery (open access)

Data Sciences Technology for Homeland Security Information Management and Knowledge Discovery

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has vast amounts of data available, but its ultimate value cannot be realized without powerful technologies for knowledge discovery to enable better decision making by analysts. Past evidence has shown that terrorist activities leave detectable footprints, but these footprints generally have not been discovered until the opportunity for maximum benefit has passed. The challenge faced by the DHS is to discover the money transfers, border crossings, and other activities in advance of an attack and use that information to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities. The data to be analyzed by DHS comes from many sources ranging from news feeds, to raw sensors, to intelligence reports, and more. The amount of data is staggering; some estimates place the number of entities to be processed at 1015. The uses for the data are varied as well, including entity tracking over space and time, identifying complex and evolving relationships between entities, and identifying organization structure, to name a few. Because they are ideal for representing relationship and linkage information, semantic graphs have emerged as a key technology for fusing and organizing DHS data. A semantic graph organizes relational data by using nodes to represent entities and edges …

The EBEX Experiment (open access)

The EBEX Experiment

EBEX is a balloon-borne polarimeter designed to measure the intensity and polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The measurements would probe the inflationary epoch that took place shortly after the big bang and would significantly improve constraints on the values of several cosmological parameters. EBEX is unique in its broad frequency coverage and in its ability to provide critical information about the level of polarized Galactic foregrounds which will be necessary for all future CMB polarization experiments. EBEX consists of a 1.5 m Dragone-type telescope that provides a resolution of less than 8 arcminutes over four focal planes each of 4. diffraction limited field of view at frequencies up to 450 GHz. The experiment is designed to accommodate 330 transition edge bolometric detectors per focal plane, for a total of up to 1320 detectors. EBEX will operate with frequency bands centered at 150, 250, 350, and 450 GHz. Polarimetry is achieved with a rotating achromatic half-wave plate. EBEX is currently in the design and construction phase, and first light is scheduled for 2008.

Ethanol Imports and the Caribbean Basin Initiative (open access)

Ethanol Imports and the Caribbean Basin Initiative

Fuel ethanol consumption has grown significantly in the past several years. Most of the U.S. market is supplied by domestic refiners producing ethanol from American corn. However, imports do play a role, albeit small, in the U.S. market. One reason for the relatively small role is a 54-cent-per-gallon tariff on imported ethanol. This tariff offsets an economic incentive of 51 cents per gallon for the use of ethanol in gasoline. However, to promote development and stability in the Caribbean region and Central America, the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) allows the imports of most products, including ethanol, duty-free.

Exploring heavy-quark energy loss via b-tagging in heavy ion collisions at the LHC (open access)

Exploring heavy-quark energy loss via b-tagging in heavy ion collisions at the LHC

A strategy to study flavor-dependent parton energy loss by tagging heavy quark jets in p+p, p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC is discussed. Estimates for production cross-sections and experimental techniques employed at collider detectors to search for Q{bar Q} jets are presented and a brief evaluation of the capabilities of CMS, ALICE and ATLAS detectors are given.
