Hadronization geometry and charge-dependent two-particlecorrelation on momentum subspace (eta, phi) in Au-Au collisions atsqrt(sNN) = 130 GeV (open access)

Hadronization geometry and charge-dependent two-particlecorrelation on momentum subspace (eta, phi) in Au-Au collisions atsqrt(sNN) = 130 GeV

We present the first measurements of charge-dependent two-particle correlations on momentum-space difference variables {eta}{sub 1}-{eta}{sub 2} (pseudorapidity) and {phi}{sub 1}-{phi}{sub 2} (azimuth) for primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15 {le} p{sub t} {le} 2 GeV/c and |{eta}| {le} 1.3 from Au-Au collisions at {radical}s{sub NN} = 130 GeV. We observe correlation structures not predicted by theory but consistent with evolution of hadron emission geometry with increasing centrality from one-dimensional fragmentation of color strings to higher-dimensional fragmentation of a hadron-opaque bulk medium.

Measurement of cross sections for the 63Cu(alpha,gamma)67Ga reaction from 5.9-8.7 MeV (open access)

Measurement of cross sections for the 63Cu(alpha,gamma)67Ga reaction from 5.9-8.7 MeV

We have measured cross sections for the 63Cu(alpha,gamma)67Ga reaction in the 5.9-8.7 MeV energy range using an activation technique. Natural Cu foils were bombarded with alpha beams from the 88 Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Activated foils were counted using gamma spectrometry system at LBNL's Low Background Facility. The 63Cu(alpha,gamma)67Ga cross-sections were determined and compared with the latest NON-SMOKER theoretical values. Experimental cross sections were found to be in agreement with theoretical values.

Full System Operations of Mercury; A Diode-Pumped Solid-State Laser

Operation of the Mercury laser with two amplifiers activated has yielded 30 Joules at 1 Hz and 12 Joules at 10 Hz and over 8 x 10{sup 4} shots on the system. Static distortions in the Yb:S-FAP amplifiers were corrected by magneto rheological finishing technique.

Appropriations for FY2005: U.S. Department of Agriculture and Related Agencies

Appropriations are one part of a complex federal budget process that includes budget resolutions, appropriations (regular, supplemental, and continuing) bills, rescissions, and budget reconciliation bills. This Report is a guide to one of the 13 regular appropriations bills that Congress passes each year. It is designed to supplement the information provided by the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Agriculture.

Why Are Neutrinos Light? -- An Alternative (open access)

Why Are Neutrinos Light? -- An Alternative

We review the recent proposal that neutrinos are light because their masses are proportional to a low scale, f, of lepton flavor symmetry breaking. This mechanism is testable because the resulting pseudo-Goldstone bosons, of mass m_G, couple strongly with the neutrinos, affecting the acoustic oscillations during the eV era of the early universe that generate the peaks in the CMB radiation. Characteristic signals result over a very wide range of (f, m_G) because of a change in the total relativistic energy density and because the neutrinos scatter rather than free-stream. Thermodynamics allows a precise calculation of the signal, so that observations would not only confirm the late-time neutrino mass mechanism, but could also determine whether the neutrino spectrum is degenerate, inverted or hierarchical and whether the neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana. The flavor symmetries could also give light sterile states. If the masses of the sterile neutrinos turn on after the MeV era, the LSND oscillations can be explained without upsetting big bang nucleosynthesis, and, since the sterile states decay to lighter neutrinos and pseudo-Goldstones, without giving too much hot dark matter.

The Use of Microelectrodes in the Study of the Effects of Electrolyte Composition, Potential and Metallurgical Condition on Nucleation and Metastable Pitting of Stainless Steel 316 (open access)

The Use of Microelectrodes in the Study of the Effects of Electrolyte Composition, Potential and Metallurgical Condition on Nucleation and Metastable Pitting of Stainless Steel 316

The study of stainless steel 316 has been undertaken in electrolytes containing various concentrations of chloride (Cl{sup -}) and perchlorate (ClO{sub 4}{sup -}) ions. The concentration of Cl{sup -} and ClO{sub 4}{sup -} in these electrolytes varied between 0.025 and 0.1 M in a variety of combinations. Results showed that the total number of nucleation and metastable pitting events increased as [Cl{sup -}] and potential increased. However, the percentage propagation rate of metastable pits from nucleations increased. The data also showed that the metallurgical condition of the specimen affected the number of nucleations and metastable pits generated.

Structural Monitoring of a Weapons Test Unit Using Imaging Methods for Dynamic Signature Analysis (open access)

Structural Monitoring of a Weapons Test Unit Using Imaging Methods for Dynamic Signature Analysis

A methodology to identify structural changes in weapons systems during environmental tests is being developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The method is coherence based and relies on comparing the ''dynamic signature'' response of the test article before and after an environmental test or test series. Physical changes in the test article result in changes in the dynamic signature and are mapped to an image matrix where a color scale represents changes in sensor-to-sensor coherence. This methodology is convenient because it allows an image to represent large amounts of information in a very compact form, where even subtle system changes may be easily and quickly identified. Furthermore, comparison of the dynamic signature response data before and after any test event can be made on a quasi-real-time basis. This approach is particularly useful on large and/or complex test articles where many sensors are present, and large volumes of data are generated.
