The Million Solar Roofs Partnership Update is an annual report from all the Partnership and Partners who participate in the Million Solar Roofs Initiative.

Cofiring biomass-for example, forestry residues such as wood chips-with coal in existing boilers is one of the easiest biomass technologies to implement in a federal facility. The current practice is to substitute biomass for up to 20% of the coal in the boiler. Cofiring has many benefits: it helps to reduce fuel costs as well as the use of landfills, and it curbs emissions of sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide, and the greenhouse gases associated with burning fossil fuels. This Federal Technology Alert was prepared by the Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program to give federal facility managers the information they need to decide whether they should pursue biomass cofiring at their facilities.

This guide was prepared to be a resource for federal construction project managers and others who want to integrate the principles of sustainable design into the procurement of professional building design and consulting services. To economize on energy costs and improve the safety, comfort, and health of building occupants, building design teams can incorporate daylighting, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and passive solar design into all projects in which these elements are technically and economically feasible. This book describes the first Solar Decathlon, a competition for college and university students, which took place on the National Mall in fall 2002. Student teams competed to design, build, and operate the most attractive, energy-efficient house that used only solar energy. In addition to the competition, the Solar Decathlon was also a public event. The book describes the events on the Mall, including technical details about the ten contests that comprised the competition and descriptions of the public's and the media's responses to the event. The book also provides information about the student teams' activities in the year and a half before they arrived to compete on the Mall.

This account of the beginning of the program on laser fusion at Livermore in 1962, and its subsequent development during the decade ending in 1972, was originally prepared as a contribution to the January 1991 symposium 'Achievements in Physics' honoring Professor Keith Brueckner upon his retirement from the University of San Diego at La Jolla. It is a personal recollection of work at Livermore from my vantage point as its scientific leader, and of events elsewhere that I thought significant. This period was one of rapid growth in which the technology of high-power short-pulse lasers needed to drive the implosion of thermonuclear fuel to the temperature and density needed for ignition was developed, and in which the physics of the interaction of intense light with plasmas was explored both theoretically and experimentally.

Interview with accountant and Army veteran William Barsanti. The interview includes Barsanti's personal experiences about the European Theater during World War II, his youth in an Italian immigrant family, graduating from high school and enrolling in college, then in the Enlisted Reserve Corps, being inducted into the U.S. Army, basic training, being selected for the Army Specialized Training Program, transferring to the 106th Infantry Division, and his assignment to Cannon Company as a supply sergeant. Barsanti also talks about the living conditions at Stalag XII-A and Stalag II-D, Stargard, Germany, evacuating to Bremervorde, Germany, liberation, and his postwar business career in Europe.

Interview with U.S. Army Air Forces and U.S. Air Force veteran P. K. Carlton. Carlton speaks about his association with General Curtis LeMay, bomber operations against Japan and Japanese occupied territory, his assignment with the Strategic Air Command Operations staff under LeMay, and the role of the SAC and the B-52 in relations with the Soviets. Additionally, Carlton speaks about LeMay's role in creating a safety program for the SAC and in building SAC's communications system, in the development of radar formation flying as well as in the development of Arctic bombing routes and in the USAF's acceptance of the B-52, LeMay's relationship with the press, his efforts to establish survival schools, his influence on USAF equipment decisions, operational contributions and emphasis on readiness, and his views on the use of airpower in Vietnam.
