Active voltammetric microsensors with neural signal processing. (open access)

Active voltammetric microsensors with neural signal processing.

Many industrial and environmental processes, including bioremediation, would benefit from the feedback and control information provided by a local multi-analyte chemical sensor. For most processes, such a sensor would need to be rugged enough to be placed in situ for long-term remote monitoring, and inexpensive enough to be fielded in useful numbers. The multi-analyte capability is difficult to obtain from common passive sensors, but can be provided by an active device that produces a spectrum-type response. Such new active gas microsensor technology has been developed at Argonne National Laboratory. The technology couples an electrocatalytic ceramic-metallic (cermet) microsensor with a voltammetric measurement technique and advanced neural signal processing. It has been demonstrated to be flexible, rugged, and very economical to produce and deploy. Both narrow interest detectors and wide spectrum instruments have been developed around this technology. Much of this technology's strength lies in the active measurement technique employed. The technique involves applying voltammetry to a miniature electrocatalytic cell to produce unique chemical ''signatures'' from the analytes. These signatures are processed with neural pattern recognition algorithms to identify and quantify the components in the analyte. The neural signal processing allows for innovative sampling and analysis strategies to be employed with the …

Aluminum hydroxide coating thickness measurements and brushing tests on K West Basin fuel elements (open access)

Aluminum hydroxide coating thickness measurements and brushing tests on K West Basin fuel elements

Aluminum hydroxide coating thicknesses were measured on fuel elements stored in aluminum canisters in K West Basin using specially developed eddy current probes . The results were used to estimate coating inventories for MCO fuel, loading. Brushing tests successfully demonstrated the ability to remove the coating if deemed necessary prior to MCO loading.

Analysis of a water-coolant leak into a very high-temperature vitrification chamber. (open access)

Analysis of a water-coolant leak into a very high-temperature vitrification chamber.

A coolant-leakage incident occurred during non-radioactive operation of the Plasma Hearth Process waste-vitrification development system at Argonne National Laboratory when a stray electric arc ruptured az water-cooling jacket. Rapid evaporation of the coolant that entered the very high-temperature chamber pressurized the normally sub-atmospheric system above ambient pressure for over 13 minutes. Any positive pressurization, and particularly a lengthy one, is a safety concern since this can cause leakage of contaminants from the system. A model of the thermal phenomena that describe coolant/hot-material interactions was developed to better understand the characteristics of this type of incident. The model is described and results for a variety of hypothetical coolant-leak incidents are presented. It is shown that coolant leak rates above a certain threshold will cause coolant to accumulate in the chamber, and evaporation from this pool can maintain positive pressure in the system long after the leak has been stopped. Application of the model resulted in reasonably good agreement with the duration of the pressure measured during the incident. A closed-form analytic solution is shown to be applicable to the initial leak period in which the peak pressures are generated, and is presented and discussed.

Analysis of separatrix plasma parameters using local and multi-machine databases (open access)

Analysis of separatrix plasma parameters using local and multi-machine databases

The ITER divertor modeling and database expert groups have assembled a scalar database of the edge plasma parameters for existing diverted tokamak devices as a means of enabling scaling studies of the SOL plasma. Data exist from ASDEX, ASDEX-Upgrade, C-MOD, COMPASS-D, DIII-D, JET, JFT-2M, and JT-6OU. We describe the scaling of plasma parameters at the outer midplane obtained from examination of this multi-machine database in this paper. The plasma parameters at the outer rnidplane are used as a boundary condition for all simulations of the SOL plasma, and hence understanding of the expected value of these parameters is crucial for the successful design of the ITER divertor.

Analysis of the e-beam evaporation of titanium and Ti-6Al-4V (open access)

Analysis of the e-beam evaporation of titanium and Ti-6Al-4V

An experimental and finite element analysis was performed for the electron-beam evaporation of Ti and Ti-6Al-4V from a bottom-feed system. The bulk evaporation rate was measured by feed consumption, and the pool elevation was held constant by adjusting the feed rate in a closed-loop control system. The instantaneous titanium and aluminum evaporation rates were determined by laser absorption in the vapor plume. Water temperature rises in cooling water circuits provided heat flows, and post-run cross sections revealed the location of the solidification zone. The MELT finite element code was applied to model the steady-state two-dimensional fluid flow and energy transport in the rod. There was good agreement between model and measured values of the heat flows and solidification boundaries for Ti. Measured bulk evaporation rates were similar for Ti and Ti-6-4 with greater variation observed for the Ti values. The model evaporation rates were higher than the measured values, but a similar linear dependence on e-beam power was observed in all cases. In a Ti-6-4 evaporation experiment with steady process conditions, laser absorption measurements showed much larger fluctuations in the evaporation rate for Al than Ti.
