Analysis results from the Los Alamos 2D/3D program

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a participant in the 2D/3D program. Activities conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory in support of 2D/3D program goals include analysis support of facility design, construction, and operation; provision of boundary and initial conditions for test facility operations based on analysis of pressurized water reactors; performance of pretest and posttest predictions and analyses; and use of experimental results to validate and assess the single- and multidimensional nonequilibrium features in the Transient Reactor Analysis Code (TRAC). During Fiscal Year 1986, Los Alamos conducted analytical assessment activities using data from the Cylindrical Core Test Facility and the Slab Core Test Facility. Los Alamos also continued to provide support analysis for the planning of Upper Plenum Test Facility experiments. Finally, Los Alamos either completed or is currently working on three areas of TRAC modeling improvement. In this paper, Los Alamos activities during Fiscal Year 1986 are summarized; several significant accomplishments are described in more detail to illustrate the work activities at Los Alamos.

Analytical method for treatment of nonlinear resonances in accelerators (open access)

Analytical method for treatment of nonlinear resonances in accelerators

An analytical method has been developed for investigating the nonlinear effects on the dynamical systems such as circular accelerators including the perturbation of tune; emittance growth; Hamiltonian resonance strength; generating function resonance strengths; fixed points; Chirikov criteria; island width, etc. We have incorporated some of our results into an algorithm which we used to study the structure resonances in the Booster, RHIC, and the SSC. A brief theoretical discussion is given. Using program NONLIN the structure resonances of the SSC CDR clustered lattice are analyzed and some of the results are tabulated.

Analytical support for the ORR (Oak Ridge Research Reactor) whole-core LEU U/sub 3/Si/sub 2/-Al fuel demonstration (open access)

Analytical support for the ORR (Oak Ridge Research Reactor) whole-core LEU U/sub 3/Si/sub 2/-Al fuel demonstration

Analytical methods used to analyze neutronic data from the whole-core LEU fuel demonstration in the Oak Ridge Research Reactor are briefly discussed. Calculated eigenvalues corresponding to measured critical control rod positions are presented for each core used in the gradual transition from an all HEU to an all LEU configuration. Some calculated and measured results, including ..beta../sub eff//l/sub p/, are compared for HEU and LEU fresh fuel criticals. Finally, the perturbing influences of the six voided beam tubes on certain core parameters are examined. For reasons yet to be determined, differential shim rod worths are not well-calculated in partially burned cores.

Angular distributions of very low energy recoil ions (open access)

Angular distributions of very low energy recoil ions

We present the first measurements of the angular distribution of recoil ions near 90/sup 0/ with respect to the incident projectile direction. Beams of 22.5 and 33 MeV chlorine ions (incident charge states q =4,5,8) have been used as ''hammer'' beams incident on Ne atoms. We confirm the long standing assumption that these recoil ions are ejected preferentially at angles near 90/sup 0/ with respect to the primary beam direction and with energies typically less than 5 eV. Recoil ions ejected around 90/sup 0/ have an energy distribution appreciably wider than those ejected at either larger or smaller angles. 9 refs., 6 figs.

ANL advanced accelerator test facility. Progress report (open access)

ANL advanced accelerator test facility. Progress report

A facility is presently being constructed which can measure transverse and longitudinal wake fields in structures and media. Initial experiments with cavities and plasma are being directed at systems which could be applied to a high energy linear collider, although other experiments should be possible. The facility will eventually operate as a user facility.

ANL computer controlled target storage system: Status report (open access)

ANL computer controlled target storage system: Status report

Design and operation of an isotopic target storage system is described. Due to the cost and effort associated with nuclear target production, it is necessary to protect them. The storage system described was designed to protect up to 90 hydroscopic and readily oxidizing targets under vacuum of 10/sup -6/ torr. The computer controller maintains system integrity during normal use and emergency situations. (JDH)

Annotated geothermal bibliography of Utah

The bibliography includes all the Utah geothermal references through 1984. Some 1985 citations are listed. Geological, geophysical, and tectonic maps and reports are included if they cover a high-temperature thermal area. The references are indexed geographically either under (1) United States (national studies), (2) regional - western United States or physiographic province, (3) Utah - statewide and regional, or (4) county. Reports concerning a particular hot spring or thermal area are listed under both the thermal area and the county names.

Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and the heavy fermion system UPt/sub 3/ (open access)

Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and the heavy fermion system UPt/sub 3/

We review the results of inelastic polarized and unpolarized magnetic neutron scattering measurements on the heavy fermion superconductor UPt/sub 3/. Below T/sub chi/ = 18K, we find evidence for antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations with a modulation vector along the c-axis of the hexagonal lattice. This contradicts the analogy often made between UPt/sub 3/ and liquid /sup 3/He, and may have important consequences for the pairing mechanism responsible for superconductivity in this system.

Antimatter clusters from hadronizing quark-gluon plasma (open access)

Antimatter clusters from hadronizing quark-gluon plasma

A realistic model is used for the phase transition between the color deconfining quark-gluon plasma phase and the color confining hadronic gas phase of nuclear matter to discuss the question how quarks and antiquarks hadronize in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. Particular attention is given to the problem associated with the latent heat and latent entropy set free in the hadronization process. Assuming a specific space-time scenario for the phase transition, relative abundances are computed for different hadronic particles and resonances produced during hadronization, showing that in particular antinucleons and light antinuclei are enhanced above their equilibrium abundances in a hadron gas of similar density and temperature. This enhancement is interpreted as a possible signature for the existence of a transient quark-gluon plasma phase in relativistic heavy-ion collisions which can complement the widely discussed strangeness signal. However, detailed dynamical studies of the hadronization process are necessary in order to definitevely settle questions about the quantitative yields. 21 refs., 8 figs.

AntiMatter Physics at Low Energy (AMPLE) (open access)

AntiMatter Physics at Low Energy (AMPLE)

The First Workshop on Antimatter Physics at Low Energy was held at FNAL last spring, April 10-12, 1986, with the stated purpose of gauging the interest in the physics that would be made possible by adding a variable energy pbar storage and cooling ring to the existing Accumulator at FNAL. The Workshop Proceedings are now published and include a concise collection of papers addressing the physics with pbars below 10 GeV/c that could be made available from the present antiproton source at FNAL. It is worth emphasizing that this is a possible without major impact on the primary mission of the laboratory. Such a facility would include provisions for extracted cooled pbar beams as well as future internal targer and colliding beam experiments. Specific experimental proposals would be facilitated by the existence of a reference design for such a facility. A central effort to produce such a reference design would be the logical next step. they are requesting the opportunity to present to this committee an overview of the physics arguments for such a facility; what we would require from the committee is 'strong encouragement' to proceed with such a reference design leading to a formal proposal. The aid of …

Antinucleon physics (open access)

Antinucleon physics

Some of the recent data from LEAR, Brookhaven, and KEK on low and medium energy interactions of antinucleons (anti N) with nucleons (N) are reviewed and interpreted. Emphasis is on elastic and charge exchange scattering, total cross sections, and studies of anti NN annihilation, with particular focus on the emerging evidence for broad resonances and/or bound states of the anti NN system and the selection rules which reveal the quuark-gluon dynamics of the annihilation process. 69 refs., 8 figs.
