Critical Strain Value for Alpha Recrystallized Rolled Uranium Sheet (open access)

Critical Strain Value for Alpha Recrystallized Rolled Uranium Sheet

Abstract: "The percentage strain at which, or immediately higher than which, grain growth occurs on cold worked alpha recrystallize uranium sheet, appears to be at approximately 2-1/2 percent reduction in thickness. Grain growth from 20 microns to over 150 microns has been indicated for this region. This phenomena is especially noteworthy when deep drawn uranium shapes are to be reheated for a coining or restriking operation."

Determining Sampling Reliability in Bulk Ores (open access)

Determining Sampling Reliability in Bulk Ores

Abstract: "The problem of evaluating the method of sampling used on a particular uranium ore or concentrate is considered. It is pointed out that the purpose of this evaluation is to obtain data on possible biases of the sampling method, the way the sample is prepared for analysis, and the analysis itself. In addition, it is pointed out that some estimate of precision, either overall or individually, for each step is required. Examples of the use of the analysis of variance approach to these problems are given. Finally, some remarks are included on sampling problems associated with other materials used by the Food Materials Production Center."

Drilling in the Flatirons Locality, Monument Valley, Arizona

From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had shown that geological conditions favorable to the accumulation of commercial uranium deposits were present in the Flatirons area.

Drying of Charcoal Used for Adsorption of Gaseous Fission Products from Homogeneous Reactors (open access)

Drying of Charcoal Used for Adsorption of Gaseous Fission Products from Homogeneous Reactors

In homogeneous nuclear reactors significant quantities of radioactive inert gaseous fission products must be separated from the fuel solution for disposal. The present disposal scheme, which is employed on the HRT, is to pass the mixture of fission product gases and oxygen through a charcoal adsorption bed. the oxygen passes through the bed relatively un-adsorbed, but the radioactive inert gases are adsorbed and are displaced from the bed bed very slowly giving the gases a much greater residence time than would exist if no bed were used. This long residence or "holdup" time permits the short-lived inert gases to decay away before emission to the atmosphere and thus greatly reduces the safety hazard produced by disposal of the gases to the atmosphere. The same effect could be obtained by using a large holdup tank, but the charcoal bed is much more compact and thus required less shielding.
