Report describing a high-sensitivity aerial gamma-ray spectrometer and magnetometer survey conducted in the lower Yukon River and Kuskokwim River areas of southwestern Alaska (covering fifteen quadrangles) and in the middle Yukon River valley in Interior Alaska (covering eight quadrangles) as part of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) Program of the United States Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). This program provides information on reconnaissance radioelement distribution to assist in assessing the uraniferous material potential in the United States. The analysis includes medium values of eU, eTh, and K (equivalent uranium, thorium, and potassium) contents of geological units.

The variables communication skills, state anxiety, communication apprehension, and level of integration are studied in relation to the assimilation of Alaskan Natives into a western-culture university. Specifically, the differences in communication skills between the two cultures and their effects on course grades are addressed. Results of the statistical analyses (ANOVA, MANOVA, discriminant function analysis, multiple regression) were not significant, most likely due to the small Alaskan Native sample size. The most significant relationship appeared between situational communication apprehension and the ethnicity of the interaction partner. Other results were directional, indicating that variables may be related to assimilation of Native students into a western university environment. Further research and replication is warranted, using an adequate sample of Alaskan Natives.

The major focus of this study is the effect of formal education on individuals, communities, cultural traditions and values on Siberian Yupik Eskimos of Alaska. The first school on St. Lawrence Island (Sivuqaq), Alaska was founded in 1899 under the direction of Sheldon Jackson. The formal school curriculum for the next thirty years was secretarian. Upon the initial operation of formal schooling on the island, various other forms of schools have impacted the islanders of St. Lawrence. Chapter two is an overview of the background of education in Alaska from its beginning as a territory to its present status as the 49th state in the United States. Chapter three presents the history of formal schooling on St. Lawrence Island. Chapters two and three contain descriptions of various other forms of schooling within the state (i.e. Bureau of Indian Affairs, mission, state-owned) and when and how these forms either existed on the island or had an impact upon its villagers. Chapter four discusses the methodology utilized in conducting the research and fieldwork for this study. From abstract: Radiometric reconnaissance in several districts of the Alaska Railroad-Iliamna region during 1951 found no radioactive material in excess of 0.002 percent equivalent uranium associated with certain lode deposits that previously were deemed favorable for the occurrence of uranium because they contain mineral assemblages similar to uranium-producing lodes elsewhere.

Abstract: No radioactive material in excess of 0.002 percent equivalent uranium was found during 1951 in a reconnaissance of possibly favorable lode deposits in the Nuka Bay, Moose Pass-Hope, and Girdwood areas of the Gulf of Alaska region.
