Organic Geochemical Studies. Ii. The Distribution of Aliphatichydrocarbons in Algae, Bacteria, and in a Recent Lake Sediment: Apreliminary Report

The theory that algal oozes could give rise to oil shales is not a recent one. Evidence for this theory rests on the finding that algae have less cellulose and a correspondingly greater proportion of lipids than most plant material. In addition, the contemporary alga Botyrococcus is present in microscopic remains in some organic oozes. Since the algal ooze precursor theory rests primarily on geological and paleobotanical evidence, they have sought to complement this evidence by making a study of the constitutents of various genera of algae at the molecular level and comparing them with the organic constituents isolated and identified in the algal ooze from a Florida lake. They have analyzed the hydrocarbon constituents of four species of algae: the blue-greens, Nostoc and Anacystis, the green algae, Spirogyra and Chlorella.

Laboratory Studies of Al-Ni-U Bonding: Interim Report (open access)

Laboratory Studies of Al-Ni-U Bonding: Interim Report

The purpose of this report is to summarize laboratory work concerning Al-Ni-U bonding. It was initiated by an analysis of the literature and hot die size bonding in particular. A hot die size bond has three major deficiencies. It is possible that one or more of the deficiencies could be alleviated by adjusting the hot die size bonding conditions, but most likely at the expense of aggravating the other deficiencies. To date the HDSB process has been superbly engineered to yield a high quality bond before pile exposure. Possible avenues for improvement of hot die size bonded fuel were surveyed. Areas for laboratory studies were then suggested. These areas included one to improve the secondary corrosion resistance of the bond, and another to provide a secondary corrosion barrier in the clad itself. A third area was a study of the basic properties of the bond especially the properties of the intermetallics of the bond.

MFC study - krypton and xenon recovery (open access)

MFC study - krypton and xenon recovery

As commercial fuels reprocessing develops, large quantities of radioactive and stable fission rare gases will become available. These gases pose both a problem and an opportunity. When efficient methods of control and recovery are developed, the cost of these materials will be greatly reduced. With increased availability and reduced costs, commercial and government applications would be accelerated. Thus the fission gases which present potential environmental problems, would become useful by-products.

A preliminary evaluation of the thermal effects of the Ben Franklin Dam project on Columbia River temperatures below the Hanford Plant (open access)

A preliminary evaluation of the thermal effects of the Ben Franklin Dam project on Columbia River temperatures below the Hanford Plant

The planned construction of the Ben Franklin project below the Hanford production reactors poses the question of determining to what extent this project will affect the Columbia River temperatures. Using the plant operations record for the year 1966, and the weather record for the same period, a series of simulation runs was made to determine the effects of the clam on the temperature regime, and the extent to which density currents could be expected to develop. This information is to be used as background for the later evaluation of the modification of the existing radionuclide discharge. The digital simulation model COL HEAT, was used. This model has been previously developed under Atomic Energy Commission sponsorship for use in the regional evaluation of the effects of the Hanford plant.

Lithium-aluminum separations request (open access)

Lithium-aluminum separations request

A test irradiation of lithium was recently completed in one of the Hanford K Reactors. It is requested that these lithium-aluminum alloy targets be separated and analyzed for tritium content. This request is for the analysis to be performed on two groups or batches of samples. The first group would be 38 elements with a total gas content estimated to be approximately 97 liters. The second batch would consist of 76 elements with a total gas content estimated to be approximately 193 liters. This then would be followed by an analysis of the combined gas content of both batches.

Pacific Northwest Laboratory monthly activities report, October 1967

The results of a statistical study of Columbia River temperature trends were released on October 18 at the Sixth WSU Hydraulics Conference. The new John Day reservoir is under study for possible beneficial effects on flow regulation. Measurements of radioactivity in 396 children were completed at Captain Gray elementary school, Pasco, Washington on October 19, 1967. Measurements began at the Emerson elementary school in Pasco on October 24, 1967, following lectures to the teaching staff and to each of the 18 classrooms in grades 1 through 6. Computer programming was started in October to determine the frequency distribution, mean, and median values of the environmental radiation dose values calculated last month from several thousand individual adult diet records. Response or game bird hunter-employees to a request for participation in a survey of game bird kills during the current season has been disappointing in spite of several articles in the project newspapers.

REVIEW OF REACTOR SAFETY ANALYSES OF FAST AND LIQUID METAL COOLED REACTORS (open access)

REVIEW OF REACTOR SAFETY ANALYSES OF FAST AND LIQUID METAL COOLED REACTORS

Safety analysis reports on United States fast and liquid metal cooled reactors were reviewed to gain a better understanding of the safety philosophy applied to the design of these facilities. This information was compiled to help guide the design and safety analysis of the Fast Flux Test Facility. No attempt was made to draw conclusions concerning the relative merit of different approaches and philosophies used by different reactor design teams. The facilities reviewed were; Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant (FERMI) Hallam Nuclear Power Facility (HALLAM) Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor (SEFOR) Fast Reactor Test Facility (FARET) Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 1 (EBR-I) Experimental Breeder Reactor No. 2 (EBR-II) Fast Reactor Zero Power Experiment (ZPR - III). The information gathered from the safety analysis reports is tabulated under these headings: Control and Safety Systems; Reactor Protection Systems; Backup Systems; Containment or Confinement Systems; Inherent Reactivity Effects and Important Physics Parameters; Fuel and Fuel Handling; Accidents Considered and Chemical Problems; Site; Exhaust Ventilation System; and Waste Effluents.
