Fast reactor analytical shielding progress report for July and August 1973. 189a No. 10318, activity No. HN 04 01 01 1

Analytical shielding work performed for the fast reactor program during the months of July and August included calculations for both the FFTF and the Demo plant, computer code development, analyses of TSF experiments, and a cross- section sensitivity study of a TSF experiment. Most of the FFTF studies were aimed at determining the effect of various design changes on the dose rates at the maintenance deck during reactor operation, in particular, the effects of penetrations through the radial cavity shield and the effect of a new design for the head temperature control system shield. Gamma-ray dose rates due to the activated sodium coolant were also calculated for two locations in the system: around one of the branch-arm piping shields and near the entrances of the 28-in. and 16-in. coolant lines into the IHX cell. The main Demo plant study was for the lower axial shield region; another study has been initiated to calculate the Demo stored-fuel power and the ex-vessel detector response. The code development consisted in setting forth a set of specifications for the fourth version of the discrete ordinates code DOT. The TSF experiments that were analyzed were an experiment in which secondary gammaray production in iron-polyethylene configurations …

Growth of molten core debris pools in concrete. Progress report, March 1, 1977--November 30, 1977. [LMFBR] (open access)

Growth of molten core debris pools in concrete. Progress report, March 1, 1977--November 30, 1977. [LMFBR]

Experiments have been conducted using a volumetrically-heated pool with noncondensable gas injection at the boundaries to simulate the heat transfer processes taking place in molten core debris/concrete systems. Measurements of the upward, downward, and sideward heat transfer rates have been made over wide ranges of internal Rayleigh number (6.0 x 10/sup 5/ < Ra < 2.7 x 10/sup 9/), superficial gas velocity (0 < V/sub g/ < 2.5 cm/min), and pool aspect ratio (1.32 < W/L < 5.16). Pools with either an isothermal solid upper boundary or a free surface have been examined. Detailed measurements of the temperature distribution within the pools have also been made. The results indicate that the downward heat transfer rates are significantly increased while the sideward heat transfer rates are slightly affected by gas injection. The heat transfer rates at the pool boundaries are sensitive to the upper surface boundary condition. Efforts are continuing on the second part of the present study where the phase-change and gas evolution processes are combined.

Impact of Major Design Parameters on the Economics of Tokamak Power Plants (open access)

Impact of Major Design Parameters on the Economics of Tokamak Power Plants

A parametric systems studies program is now in an active stage at Argonne National Laboratory. This paper presents a summary of results from this systems analysis effort. The impact of major design parameters on the economics of tokamak power plants is examined. The major parameters considered are: (1) the plant power rating; (2) toroidal-field strength; (3) plasma ..beta../sub t/; (4) aspect ratio; (5) plasma elongation; (6) inner blanket/shield thickness; and (7) neutron wall load. The performance characteristics and economics of tokamak power plants are also compared for two structural materials (stainless steel and a vanadium alloy).

Chemical maximum humidity indicator update report. Topical report (open access)

Chemical maximum humidity indicator update report. Topical report

Raw materials and manufactured parts sometimes must be kept in a controlled-humidity environment. The use of moisture-sensitive systems to indicate the maximum level of humidity exposure is discussed. A chemical indicator made from deliquescent salts and water-soluble dyes provides an irreversible color change at discrete levels of relative humidity. The performance and long-term-stability characteristics of the indicator are described.

Neutron-induced mutation experiments. Progress report, March 1, 1975-- February 29, 1976 (open access)

Neutron-induced mutation experiments. Progress report, March 1, 1975-- February 29, 1976

The relative mutagenic effectiveness of neutrons of different energies were compared with x radiation in mice and Drosophila oogonia employing X-linked recessive lethal and specific locus mutation tests. The energies and doses used were 0.68 MeV, 2 MeV, and 6 MeV (250 and 500$sup 0$R), and 15 MeV (250, 500, and 1000$sup 0$R). The data thus far collected from the recessive lethal test indicate that 0.68 MeV neutrons have the highest RBE among the energies tested, followed by 6 and 2 MeV. The specific locus mutation data also indicate the highest RBE for 0.68 MeV, followed respectively by 2 and 6 MeV. The 15 MeV data is as of now incompletely analyzed, as are some dose points of 2 and 6 MeV. (auth)

Neutron-induced mutation experiments. Progress report, March 1, 1976--February 28, 1977. [In Drosophila]

Results are from studies of experiments in Drosophila on the relative mutagenic effectiveness of neutrons of different energies employing X-linked recessive lethal and specific locus mutation tests. The energies and doses employed to data are .43 MeV (500, 1000, and 1500 R, in progress), .68 MeV (250, 500, 1000, and 1500 R), 2 and 6 MeV (250 and 500 R), and 15 MeV (250, 500, 1000, 1500 and 3000 R). .68 MeV neutrons appear to have an RBE between 3.3 to 4.5, 15 MeV neutrons an RBE between 1.9 to 2.2, and 2 and 6 MeV neutrons RBE's of intermediate values. The data for both .68 and 15 MeV neutrons do not yet differentiate between a linear and quadratic dose/frequency response curve for the doses studied. The specific locus mutation data also indicate the highest RBE for .68 MeV, followed by 2 and 6 MeV respectively.

Neutron-induced mutation experiments. Progress report, March 1, 1977--February 28, 1978. [Drosophila female gonial cell exposure]

Experiments have been carried out to study the relative mutagenic effectiveness for Drosophila female germ cells of neutrons of different energies employing X-linked recessive lethal and specific locus mutation tests. The energies and doses employed to date to study X-linked lethals are 0.43 MeV (500, 1000, 1500, 1900 R (in progress)), 0.68 MeV (250, 500, 1000, 1500 R), 2 MeV (250, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 R), 6 MeV (250, 500, 1500, 3000 R) and 15 MeV (250, 500, 1000, 1500, 3000 R). 0.43-MeV neutrons appear to have an RBE in the range 1.9 to 4.7, 0.68 MeV 2.8 to 4.3, 2 MeV (incomplete data), 6 MeV 1.7 to 3.2, and 15 MeV 1.7 to 2.2. The data for 0.43-MeV and 0.68-MeV neutrons do not yet differentiate between a linear and a quadratic dose/frequency response curve for the doses studied, but suggest a quadratic relationship. The data for 2, 6 and 15 MeV are inconclusive. The specific locus mutation data indicate the highest RBE for 0.68-MeV neutrons, followed by 2 and 6 MeV, respectively.

Uranium and sodium oxide aerosol experiments: NSPP tests 201-203 and tests 301-302, data record report. [HAARM-3 code validation] (open access)

Uranium and sodium oxide aerosol experiments: NSPP tests 201-203 and tests 301-302, data record report. [HAARM-3 code validation]

This data record report summarizes the first three uranium oxide aerosol tests and two preliminary mixed uranium oxide-sodium oxide aerosol tests conducted in the Nuclear Safety Pilot Plant project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The goal of the project is to establish the validity (or level of conservatism) of the aerosol behavioral code, HAARM-3, and follow-on codes under development at the Battelle Columbus Laboratories for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Included in the report are descriptions of the five tests, together with tables and graphs summarizing the results.
