Hydrothermal injection research program. Annual progress report, FY 1984 (open access)

Hydrothermal injection research program. Annual progress report, FY 1984

Studies are described to develop tracers which do not interact with a reservoir and to calculate the mixing of injected fluids and native reservoir fluids. Techniques to calculate the reactions of injected fluids with reservoir rocks are presented. Test results at East Mesa and Raft River Geothermal fields are described and interpretations of field mixing in terms of reservoir characteristics are developed. Supporting laboratory experiments on fracture flow are used to assure that interpretations of field data are based on sound theoretical concepts. A computer code, FRACSL, is described which is used to analyze the fluid mixing data obtained in laboratory and field experiments.

Plasma-wall interactions in tandem mirror machines (open access)

Plasma-wall interactions in tandem mirror machines

A description is presented of the plasma-surface interactions in thermal-barrier tandem-mirror machines. The thermal-barrier mode of axial confinement is an integral part of a tandem mirror, and it dictates the required plasma conditions, particularly at the surface of the plasma. For this reason, a qualitative discussion of the thermal barrier is presented first in Section 2. A brief description of the experimental configuration used in tandem mirrors to create the thermal barrier is then examined in detail in Section 3; the TMX-U and MFTF-B machines are used as specific examples. In Section 4, the relevant plasma-surface interaction issues are addressed, and experimental results from currently operating tandom mirror machines are included. Section 5 is both a summary and a discussion of future work concerned with plasma-surface interactions in tandem mirrors.

Proceedings of the Eighth DOE Solar Photochemistry Research Conference Held at Interlaken Conference Center, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, June 11-14, 1984

These annual meetings bring together contractors of the Division of Chemical Sciences in its basic research program on solar photochemical energy conversion to exchange information and to give interested government officials an opportunity to assess the current status of the program. This year's meeting was joined by 12 Canadian scientists with similar interests in solar photochemistry. This volume contains the program of the meeting, a list of attendees, the abstracts of 29 formal presentations and 36 posters, and a record of questions and answers following each presentation.

Internal field probing of translating FRCs (open access)

Internal field probing of translating FRCs

Magnetic field probes have been employed to study the internal field structure of Field-Reversed Configurations (FRCs) translating past the probes in the FRX-C/T device. Internal closed flux surfaces can be studied in this manner with minimal perturbation because of the rapid transit of the plasma (translation velocity v/sub z/ approx. 10 cm/..mu..s). Data have been taken using a 5-mtorr-D/sub 2/ gas-puff mode of operation in the FRC source coil which yields an initial plasma density of approx. 1 x 10/sup 15/ cm/sup -3/ and x/sub s/ approx. 0.40. FRCs translate from the approx. 25 cm radius source coil into a 20 cm radius metal translation vessel. Of many translation conditions studied, the condition considered here is translation into a weak guide field resulting in expansion of the FRC to conditions of density approx. 3 x 10/sup 14/ and x/sub s/ approx. 0.7. The expected reversed B/sub z/ structure is observed. Evidence of island structure is also observed. Fluctuating levels of B/sub THETA/ are observed with amplitudes less than or equal to B/sub 0//3 and values of flux approx. 4 x the poloidal flux. Values of ..beta.. on the separatrix of ..beta../sub s/ approx. = 0.3 (indexed to the external field) …

Partially coherent x-rays from modern storage rings (open access)

Partially coherent x-rays from modern storage rings

Several routes to the development of ideal soft x-ray sources are now being actively pursued. These include atomic lasers, free electron lasers (FELs), and storage ring (synchrotron) undulators. For short wavelength (XUV) applications, FELs and undulators are very closely related, each being dependent on the development of well controlled (low ''emittance'') electron storage rings, with energies of order 0.5 to 1.5 GeV beam energy, and many period magnetic structures, referred to as undulators. The major thrust of this article is that undulators provide the only sure route to coherent soft x-rays in the near term, that they are tuneable throughout the region of interest, and that they will serve a multitude of users, in disparate fields of science and technology, albeit at a large central research facility. 4 refs., 4 figs.

Software for reflectivity calculations of x-ray mirrors. Revision 1 (open access)

Software for reflectivity calculations of x-ray mirrors. Revision 1

With VAX software and the data libraries of Henke and Biggs-Lighthill, we have created a library of atomic scattering factors f/sub 1/ and f/sub 2/ in the energy range 0.1 keV to 10.0 keV. Scattering factor values for the elements Z = 1 to Z = 94 and in the above energy range are stored in a keyed access library (key = element symbol). This library allows one to calculate reflectivity rapidly and fold it with other components in an x-ray detector channel. Additional software allows the library data to be easily extended to higher energies. Applications have so far included KB x-ray microscopes and low energy spectrometers with mirror channels.

TERRA: a computer code for simulating the transport of environmentally released radionuclides through agriculture (open access)

TERRA: a computer code for simulating the transport of environmentally released radionuclides through agriculture

TERRA is a computer code which calculates concentrations of radionuclides and ingrowing daughters in surface and root-zone soil, produce and feed, beef, and milk from a given deposition rate at any location in the conterminous United States. The code is fully integrated with seven other computer codes which together comprise a Computerized Radiological Risk Investigation System, CRRIS. Output from either the long range (> 100 km) atmospheric dispersion code RETADD-II or the short range (<80 km) atmospheric dispersion code ANEMOS, in the form of radionuclide air concentrations and ground deposition rates by downwind location, serves as input to TERRA. User-defined deposition rates and air concentrations may also be provided as input to TERRA through use of the PRIMUS computer code. The environmental concentrations of radionuclides predicted by TERRA serve as input to the ANDROS computer code which calculates population and individual intakes, exposures, doses, and risks. TERRA incorporates models to calculate uptake from soil and atmospheric deposition on four groups of produce for human consumption and four groups of livestock feeds. During the environmental transport simulation, intermediate calculations of interception fraction for leafy vegetables, produce directly exposed to atmospherically depositing material, pasture, hay, and silage are made based on location-specific …

Measurement of the pp. -->. pi. d spin correlation parameters A/sub SL/ and A/sub LL/ at energies between 500 and 800 MeV (open access)

Measurement of the pp. -->. pi. d spin correlation parameters A/sub SL/ and A/sub LL/ at energies between 500 and 800 MeV

Angular distributions of the spin correlation parameters A/sub SL/ and A/sub LL/ for the inelastic reaction pp..--> pi..d have been measured at pion center-of-mass angles between 40 and 130/sup 0/, at energies of 500, 650, and 800 MeV. Additional measurements of A/sub LL/(THETA) were made at 600, 700, and 750 MeV. The reaction was studied using an incident beam of either longitudinally polarized protons. Both the final state pion and deuteron were detected in a two-armed detector system. The momenta of particles detected in the deuteron arm were analyzed with a magnetic spectrometer which allowed the deuterons to be distinguished from particles produced by quasi-free, three-body, or other background reactions. A/sub SL/ was found to be negative (approx. = -0.5) at 500 MeV. It became increasingly more negative as energy increased, going down to as low as -0.88 at forward angles at 800 MeV. A/sub SL/ showed only a slight angular dependence in the entire energy range. The angular distribution of A/sub LL/ was found to be almost flat at 500 (approx. = -0.5) and 600 MeV (approx. = -0.4). As energy increased A/sub LL/ became less negative and began to peak at theta/sub cm/ = 90/sup 0/. At 800 …
