TEM investigation of 14 MeV neutron damage
From joint meeting of the American Nuclear Society and the Atomic Industrial Forum and Nuclear Energy Exhibition; San Francisco, California, USA (11 Nov 1973). 14-MeV neutron damage has been investigated in gold by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The sites of energetic displacement cascades are visible due to the presence of vacancy clusters formed by the collapse or rearrangement of vacancies within the depleted zones. In 14-MeV n- induced cascades, a strong tendency towards subcascade formation is found. On the average 1.8 clusters are formed per cascade. Individual cascades with as many as 6 subcascades have been found. The number densities of clusters as well as the number densities of cascades are proportional to the fluence. The cross section for the formation of visible cascades is sigma /sub c/ = 3.3 x 10/sup - 24/ cm/sup 2/. It can be shown that recoi ls from elastic neutron scattering events can account for only about 20% of the visible cascades. The cross section corresponding to the balance of the observed cascades is, within experimental error, equal to the nonelastic neutron scattering cross section. This indicates that all nonelastic scattering events lead to the formation of a visible cascade. Quantitative agreement …

Thermal stress under high-power surface heating
Estimates are made of thermal stress in a wall subjected to transient heating on one side. A detailed calculation is carried out for a flat plate heated on one face and cooled on the other. These examples furnish a guide to power absorption limits for surfaces in high-power plasma devices. Figures of merit are tabulated for various possible materials. (auth)

Use of multiple 4$pi$ radiation sources for quasi-uniform irradiation of square surfaces
The question of distance and location of multiple 4 pi radiation sources from square planar target surfaces is addressed, with the constraint that the surface be irradiated with 80% uniformity. Results of computer calculations are presented, giving source location coordinates for optimum use of the sources under the uniformity constraint. (auth)

Variables effecting ozone treatment of physical-chemical effluent
The treatment of raw sewage from an on-site apartment area was investigated in a series of laboratory experiments in which changes in turbidity, pH, total organic carbon, chemical oxygen demand, and, in some cases, biochemical oxygen demands were determined. Raw sewage, but mainly the effluent following physical-chemical treatment, was examined for improvement in discharge quality by ozone treatment in combination with oxygen sparging, ionizing gamma radiation from /sup 60/Co heating, acidifying, and several other variables. The average composition of the raw sewage was a TOC of 125 ppM (range from 65 to 240), COD of 190 ppM (range from 85 to 475), turbidity of 145 J. U. (range from 60 to 350), and pH of 7.3 (range from 6.5 to 8.4). Physical chemical treatment usually consisted of the addition of CaO (to pH 11) and FeCl/sub 3/ as a coagulant aid in an inclined tube followed by course filtration; typical treatment time was 15 minutes giving an average reduction in TOC and COD of 40 to 60%. Subsequent treatment was usually performed with 200 cm/sup 3/ samples of the effluent in fine and course fritted bubblers. The combination of radiation plus ozone gave the largest reduction of TOC and COD. …
