Design considerations of a condensing system for vaporized magnesium

The effect of the design characteristics of various condensing chambers on magnesium build-up at the chamber inlet was investigated. The condensing chambers are used in the vapor-condensation process for making magnesium slurries. A complete description of the various chamber designs and the procedure used in testing the chambers is given. The results are evaluated on the basis of clogging and total magnesium distilled per run. Orifice design was also considered.

Six different fuel-injector designs were investigated. Results regarding the ignition, combustion efficiency, combustor pressure loss, stability of combustion, and best configuration are provided.

Antiprotons

Since the development of Dirac's theory of the electron and the brilliant confirmation of one of its most startling predictions by the discovery of the positron by Anderson, it has been assumed most likely that the proton would also have its charge conjugate, the antiproton. The properties that define the antiproton are: (a) charge equal to the electron charge (also in sign); (b) mass equal to the proton mass; (c) stability against spontaneous decay; (d) ability to annihilate by interaction with a proton or neutron, probably generating pions and releasing in some manner the energy 2 mc{sup 2}; (e) generation in pairs with ordinary nucleons; (f) magnetic moment equal but opposite to that of the proton; (g) fermion of spin 1/2. Not all these properties are independent, but all might ultimately be subjected to experiment.

Introduction: "The extensive use of uranium hexafluoride in the Nier-type mass spectrometers, where the ionization is produced by slow electrons, made a knowledge of the ionization potentials of the various ions desirable. This information was not available and work was accordingly begun to secure such data. The first measurement was made with a VGIA ion gauge and has been described in TEO report CD-310. With this apparatus it was not possible to identify the ionization products and it was presumed that the value reported was for the UF5 ion. When time and equipment became available, the work was continued and the critical potentials of the singly-charged ions determined."

At the request of the Bureau of Ordnance, Department of the Navy, the Langley Pilotless Aircraft Research Division has initiated a program to investigate the general aerodynamic characteristics of the Naval Ordnance Test Station's SIDEWINDER missile. The model used in the flight test presented herein was a full-scale, rocket-propelled test vehicle. This paper presents the results from a flight test investigation using the pulsed-control technique to determine the static and dynamic longitudinal stability and control derivatives and drag data for a canard-missile configuration.

Preliminary Results of APPR Critical Experiments, Part I.

This memorandum is the first in a series reporting progress in the program of critical experiments in the ORNLArmy Package Power Reactor Project. The critical assembly, designated as CA-25, is analogous to the APPR design core and consists of 45 fuel boxes, in a 7 x 7 array with the corners removed, contaIned in a large water tank. Two sides of each box are slotted for the insertion and positioning of any desired loading of eighteen plates of fuel, structural material, and poison. The array is submerged in water to provide a moderated and reflector. Enriched uranium metal, in two-mil-thick foils 2.5 x 22 in, is encased in type 304 stainless steel sheets, 2.7 x 23 x 0.0105 in., to form fuel plates. Stainless steel plates, 2.7 x 23 x 0.025 in. are used to simulate additional steel in the APPR core. It is, therefore, possible to maintain an essentially constant metal to water ration in the assembly when the fuel content is varied. The fuel is distributed as uniformly as possible in all boxes and a symmetrical distribution of materials is maintained in the core at all times. Shock Hydrodynamics of an Exploding Steam Pressure Vessel. Final Report

The purpose of these investigations is to determine, grossly and simply, if a shock hazard exists from an explosive failure of the pressurizer vessel within the vapor container. Because of the geographical location of the reactor, an explosive failure which ruptured the vapor container might release radioactive contamination from the reactor to nearby inhabited communities. The study is considered more as a generic problem than of a specific design and is concerned with the shock hydrodynamics of an exploding steam vessel. (auth)

"Theoretically derived charts showing the profile-drag-thrust ratio are presented for helicopter rotors operating in forward flight and having hinged rectangular blades with a linear twist of 0 degree, 8 degrees, and 16 degrees. The charts, showing the profile-drag characteristics of the rotor for various combinations of pitch angle, ratio of thrust coefficient to solidity, and a parameter representing shaft power input, are presented for tip-speed ratios ranging from 0.05 to 0.50. Also presented in chart form are the ratio of thrust coefficient to solidity as a function of angles of attack, as a function of inflow ratio and collective pitch, and as a function of power and thrust coefficients" (p. 1).

Determination of Trivalent Uranium with Methylene Blue

A direct titrimetric method for the determination of trivalent uranium in uranium trifluoride and mixtures of fused fluoride salts was developed. The method is based on the stoichiometric oxidation of trivalent uranium to the tetravalent oxidation state with an acidic solution of methylene blue. The sample containing trivalent uranium is dissolved at room temperature in an excess of standard methylene blue solution in a carbon dioxide atmosphere; the excess oxidant is variation of the method is 1.5 per cent for 5 mg quantities of trivalent uranium. The method was applied to various mixtures of fluoride salts containing both trivalent and tetravalent uranium.
