Reactor Safety and Fuel Cycle Economics Considerations for Fast Reactors (open access)

Reactor Safety and Fuel Cycle Economics Considerations for Fast Reactors

Abstract: A core design study of a 10 Mwe fast ceramic reactor is presented. Local reactivity coefficients, safety criteria, accident analyses, and economics are considered. An attempt is made to find a new balance of characteristics by purely geometric devices, i.e., by exploring the sodium : fuel ratio and varying the height : diameter ratio of the core. The use of BeO in the core was also investigated.

The Activity Coefficient of Plutonium(IV) Salts in Acidic Solutions (open access)

The Activity Coefficient of Plutonium(IV) Salts in Acidic Solutions

Summary: The activity coefficient of Pu(Cl04)4 was measured in perchloric acid solutions. The procedure used was to measure the extraction of the neutral plutonium(IV)-TTA chelate into benzene-TTA solutions at different perchloric acid concentrations. Equations are presented which show the relation of the extraction coefficients, obtained in the above manner, to the activity coefficient of plutonium(IV) per-chlorate. The activity coefficient of Pu(Cl0~)4 is similar to that of a strong acid, e.g., perchloric acid, in that its value increases rapidly when the perchloric acid concentration becomes greater than 2M. The distribution coefficient of TTA between benzene and aqueous perchloric acid solutions was found first to decrease slightly and then to increase two fold as the perchloric acid was varied from 0.01 to 6M. The activity coefficient of the uranous-TTA chelate in benzene was calculated from the results of solubility measurements. The values of the activity coefficient of UK4 are, within experimental error, identical with the values of the activity coefficient of TTA itself.

Final Report: Production Test No 105-505-SI. Exposure of Two Different Types of Rubber to Pile Water (open access)

Final Report: Production Test No 105-505-SI. Exposure of Two Different Types of Rubber to Pile Water

In connection with different seals for C & D equipment it appears advantageous that many parts could be made of rubber or other elastic polymers. However, data on the deterioration rate of these materials under irradiation are somewhat scant in the available literature. It appears that for neutrons and pure gamma radiation that a good grade of natural rubber stands up best in all the test reported and because the results of the neutron irradiation are so closely correlated with results from gamma it has been proposed that the principal source of damage is caused by secondary irradiation generated within the rubber by the neutrons.

Molecular Association and Electronic Structures of Nickel (II) (open access)

Molecular Association and Electronic Structures of Nickel (II)

"A new phenomenon which can, under certain circumstances, account for anomalous magnetic and spectral behavior of planar nickel(II) complexes has been discovered. This is a molecular association of the solute molecules in solvents of low coordinating power. It is shown that the magnetic moment and spectrum of bis(2.6-dimethyl1-3,5-heptanediono)nickel(II), Ni(DIBM)z, dissolved in toluene, are dependent upon both temperature and concentration.

Shearing Irradiated Uranium Plates (open access)

Shearing Irradiated Uranium Plates

From abstract: "Natural uranium plates that were irradiated to 600 and 1500 MWD/T were cut under water by a guillotine-type shear. Irradiation reduced the force required for shearing to 50 per cent of that required for unirradiated uranium. Measurements were made of radioactivity released to treated and untreated water in which the cut sections were stored."

Buckling Measurements : Heavy Natural Uranium Tubular Fuel Assemblies

One-region buckling measurements that were made on a series of D/sub 2/O- moderated lattices of heavy uranium metal tubes in the Process Development Pile at Savannah River Laboratory are presented. The purposes of these measurements are to provide normalization points for lattice bucklings and to extend the study of natural uranium- D/sub 2/O systems. The dependence of buckiing on the moderator-to-fuel ratio is studied for two types of lattices.
