Measurements of Bâ‚„C and Hâ‚‚O Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 11
The following report measures neutrons and gammas in solid B4C, as well as measuring H2O containing .5% boron by weight in the lid tank. Engineering Study of Evaporation for Concentrating Radioactive Liquid Wastes : Engineering Research Final Report
Summary: "The problem of evaporation of secondary radioactive wastes resulting from waste disposal studies at Mound Laboratoy has been studied experimentally to determine the fundamental design characteristics of a plant size unit. Emphasis, of course, was on decontamination, but the factors affecting foaming and scaling also had to be investigated and evaluated. Generally speaking, the final design is a standard type of evaporator, the only unique feature being the relation of the two effects. Where critical, as affecting performance, the particular design features have been specified."

Geology and Ore Deposits of Mesa V, Lukachukai District, Arizona
From abstract: Mesa V of the Lukachukai area is capped by Morrison sediments which dip gently eastward from the mountains to the mesa tip, where the strata are tilted sharply to the opposite dip by the Lukachukai monocline. The Salt Wash of Mesa V contains ore outcrops which indicate favorable intensity of mineralization at one horizon along a 2000-foot outcrop interval. Other scatted exposures indicate the existence of ore under much of the mesa surface.

Reconnaissance Examinations of Copper Uranium Deposits West of the Colorado River
Several relatively small copper-uranium deposits have been found in southwestern Utah along the contact of the Shinarump and Moenkopi formations of Triassic age, at least from the San Rafael Swell area of Emery County, southward through central and eastern Garfield County, southwestward into western Kane County, and westward into the southern part of Washington County.

Numerical Calculation of Blast Waves in Non-Uniform Atmosphere
The problem of a blast wave propagating through an inhomogeneous atmosphere is set up for computation by the CRC LORA. Previous treatments of this problem have used various simplifying assumptions such as that of purely radial flow. Since, however, pressure gradients in this situation will not in general be in the direction of rays from the blast center, non-radial flow will exist, and there is reason to believe that for large distances this effect will play a prominent role. Therefore, a program was set up for the numerical calculation (on the CRCLORA) of the propagation of a blast wave from a ground burse with altitude effects and possible tangential flow taken into account. With initial conditions known, the program is designed to give the pressure, density, radial and tangential flow velocities after successive time intervals at 16 equally spaced positions on each of 16 straight rays emanating from the point of burst. These positions are shifted with time to keep up with the shock front. Rehmeyer's and Van Neumann's method is used to handle the discontinuous shock front. This technical report is intended as a brief description of the free convection problem existing in the various annuli of the SIR Mark A rotating plugs. It is by no means a complete report of the plug "hot tests", but merely records some of the more significant experimental observations and presents a few of the theories and calculations made to explain the observed free convection phenomenon. Intermediary Metabolism of the Photosynthetic Bacteria. Final Report
The primary purpose of these researches was to clarify the various functions of organic substrates in bacterial photosynthesis. The following aspects were investigated; (1) metabolic pathways under photosynthetic and oxidative conditions, (2) energy transfers occurring during the metabolism in cell free extracts, and (3) the relationship between photosynthetic rate and light intensity for selected organic substrates. The results of these investigations were summarized in a paper entitled "The Application of Carbon-14 to Studies on Bacterial Photosynthesis" which was submitted to the United Nations as a contribution to the International Conference on the peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, Geneva, Switzerland, August 8-10, 1955. A reproduction of this paper constitutes a major portion of this report.

Evolution of Halides from Halogenated Plastics Exposed to Gamma Radiation
Abstract: "The purpose of the investigation was to study the effects of gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 source on the physical properties and halogen evolution from the plastics polyvinyl chloride and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene. Samples exposed for 2 to 28 days to a source of approximately 25,000 Roentgens per minute showed an appreciable evolution of both fluorine and chlorine. Tests on polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene for tensile, impact, and shear strength showed rapidly decreasing values as the radiation exposure was increased. Similar physical tests on exposed polyvinyl chloride showed increased impact and shear strengths and a lower tensile strength."
