Tank 40 Final SB7b Chemical Characterization Results (open access)

Tank 40 Final SB7b Chemical Characterization Results

A sample of Sludge Batch 7b (SB7b) was taken from Tank 40 in order to obtain radionuclide inventory analyses necessary for compliance with the Waste Acceptance Product Specifications (WAPS). The SB7b WAPS sample was also analyzed for chemical composition including noble metals and fissile constituents. At the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) the 3-L Tank 40 SB7b sample was transferred from the shipping container into a 4-L high density polyethylene bottle and solids were allowed to settle over the weekend. Supernate was then siphoned off and circulated through the shipping container to complete the transfer of the sample. Following thorough mixing of the 3-L sample, a 558 g sub-sample was removed. This sub-sample was then utilized for all subsequent analytical samples. Eight separate aliquots of the slurry were digested, four with HNO{sub 3}/HCl (aqua regia) in sealed Teflon vessels and four with NaOH/Na{sub 2}O{sub 2} (alkali or peroxide fusion) using Zr crucibles. Two Analytical Reference Glass ? 1 (ARG-1) standards were digested along with a blank for each preparation. Each aqua regia digestion and blank was diluted to 1:100 mL with deionized water and submitted to Analytical Development (AD) for inductively coupled plasma ? atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis, inductively …

Advanced coal-fueled gas turbine systems. Technical progress report, July--September 1991 (open access)

Advanced coal-fueled gas turbine systems. Technical progress report, July--September 1991

Five slagging combustor tests (CR1-2 through CR1-6) were conducted. Since integrating the slagging cyclone separator into the combustor system, noticeable quantities of char have been collected in the cyclone slag bucket and detected in the exhaust gases. The primary purpose of the CR1-X series of tests was to quantify the amount of char produced by the subscale slagging combustor system. The secondary purpose of this test series was to quantify the slag separation efficiency of the curved body impact separator and to acquire more information on the operation of the slagging cyclone separator. Test CR1-1 was conducted with a fully configured system, i.e., the curved body impact separator, slag tap bath, and slagging cyclone were installed. The CR1-1 data constitutes a baseline for the char production problem. For test CR1-2, the curved body impact separator and slag tap were removed and the centerbody impact separator was installed. This was done to recheck the relative influence of the curved body impact separator and slag tap bath on char production; also, to acquire additional data on the slag collection efficiency of the centerbody impact separator and slagging cyclone. The latter was used for deducing accurately the collection efficiency of the curved body …

Research on parallel adaptive finite element methods (open access)

Research on parallel adaptive finite element methods

In this project we studied several fundamental issues arising in the parallel adaptive solution of linear and nonlinear elliptic and parabolic PDEs using multilevel algorithms. We focused our attention on a new approach described in the paper ''A New Paradigm for Parallel Adaptive Mesh Refinement'' by Bank and Hoist. The new approach requires almost no communication to solve an elliptic equation in parallel, and therefore has the potential to scale much more efficiently on massively parallel computers than do more traditional algorithms. The algorithm described in the Bank and Hoist paper has an inherently multilevel structure, in that a sequence of problems on a refinement hierarchy of meshes is solved during the course of the calculation. In particular, the algorithm has three main components: (1) We solve a small problem on a coarse mesh, and use a posteriori error estimates to partition the mesh. (2) Each processor is provided the complete coarse mesh and instructed to solve the entire problem, but with its adaptive refinement largely limited to its own assigned mesh partition. (3) A final mesh is computed using the union of the refined partitions provided by each processor. The mesh is regularized into a global conformal mesh, and …

Characterization and Monitoring Data for Evaluating Constructed Emergent Sandbar Habitat in the Missouri River Mainstem (open access)

Characterization and Monitoring Data for Evaluating Constructed Emergent Sandbar Habitat in the Missouri River Mainstem

Emergent sandbar habitat (ESH) in the Missouri River Mainstem System is a critical habitat element for several federally listed bird species: the endangered interior least tern (Sterna antillarum) and the threatened Northern Great Plains piping plover (Charadrius melodus). The Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) provides the primary operational management of the Missouri River and is responsible under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to take actions within its authorities to conserve listed species. To comply with the 2000 USFWS BiOp and the 2003 amended USFWS BiOp, the Corps has created habitats below Gavins Point Dam using mechanical means. Initial monitoring indicates that constructed sandbars provide suitable habitat features for nesting and foraging least terns and piping plovers. Terns and plovers are using constructed sandbars and successfully reproducing at or above levels stipulated in the BiOp. However, whether such positive impacts will persist cannot yet be adequately assessed at this time.
