Activation Analysis Nuclear Chemical Research Radiochemical Separations. Progress Report No. 8 for November 1958-October 1959

Activities at the Michigan Reactor and pneumatic tube system are outlined. Various modifications including installation and operation of a "bunny" rabbit pneumatic tube system for transferring samples from laboratory to counter are described. Prelimirary investigation for design of a neutron generator for activation work is described. Modifications to the 100-channel pulse-height analyzer including addition of auxillary circuits and additioral detectors are sumnnarized. In nuclear chemistry a cyclotron bombardment to produce long-lived vanadium tracer for yield determinations in activation analysis is described. Summaries of project work which have been published on absolute (d, alpha) reaction cross sections and excitation functions, use of computers in nuclear data analysis, and research on Ir/sup 196/ are presented. Study of the gamma spectra of 33-second Kr/sup 90/, 41-second Xe/sup 139/, and some longer-lived fission product rare gases is reported and a summary of preliminary results is given. Detection of a long-lived isomer of Ag/sup 108/ in old Ag/sup 110m/ samples is reported and new values for the branching ratios of 2.4minute Ag/sup 108/ are given. Activities of the Subcommittee on Radiochemistry are summarized. Development of a radiochemical procedure by the use of amalgam exchange is reported and exchange of the elements Cd, Tl, Zn, Pb, …

ADVANCED DESIGNS OF MAGNETIC JACK-TYPE CONTROL ROD DRIVE (open access)

ADVANCED DESIGNS OF MAGNETIC JACK-TYPE CONTROL ROD DRIVE

The magnetic jack is a device for positioning the control rods In a nuclear reactor, especially in a reactor containing water under pressure. Magnetic actuation precludes the need for shaft seals and eliminates the problems associated with mechanisms operating in water. It consists of a pressure shell, four sets of external stationary magnet coils (hold, grip, lift, pull down), and one Internal moving part (ammature) that impants linear motion to a cluster of rods. CALCULATION OF THERMAL NEUTRON FLUXES IN PRIMARY SHIELDS (open access)

CALCULATION OF THERMAL NEUTRON FLUXES IN PRIMARY SHIELDS

A method is presented for calculating thermal neutron fluxes in the primary shields of reactor systems which eliminates reliance on mock-up experimental data. A multigroup P/sub 1/ approach is ernployed with the spatial dependence of the neutron sttenuation adjusted through use of a point source attenuation kernel for a homogeneous hydrogenous medium. Comparison of calculation with experiment is presentad. (auth)

Charged-Particle-Induced Fission: A Mass Spectrometric Yield Study (open access)

Charged-Particle-Induced Fission: A Mass Spectrometric Yield Study

The products from the flssion of U induced by charged particles were studied in a mass spectrometer. Both U/sup 238/ and U/sup 235/ were bombarded with 45.7- and 24-Mev helium ions, and U/sup 238/ was also bombarded with 730-Mev protons and 100-Mev carbon ions. Tbe total chain-yields in the region of the rare-earth elemerts (mass 140 to mass 155) for most of the above bombardments and a thermal-neutron bombardment of U/sup 235/ were studied by using the isotopicdilution technique. Independent yields were measured for all the above bombardnnents for several shielded nuclides. (auth)

Corrosion of Aluminum-Uranium Alloys in High-Temperature Water (open access)

Corrosion of Aluminum-Uranium Alloys in High-Temperature Water

Sixty-day corrosion tests were performed in water at 290 deg C with unirradiated aluminum-uranium alloys containing 2 wt.% nickel and 1/2 wt.% iron, with several uranium contents from 15 wt.% to 53 wt.%. The maximum methi penetration rate (4 mils per year by extrapolation) of these alloys was no more than twice that of X8001 alumunum cladding alloy at the same temperature. Preliminary testing in water at 350 deg C indicated good corrosion resistance for this alloy system ap to a maximum of 80 wt.% uranium. (auth)

CORROSION OF CARBON STEEL IN WASTE SOLUTIONS CONTAINING MERCURY

The corosion behavior of A-285, A-135, A-l06, and A-53 carbon steel was studied in multicomponent simulated waste solutions containing mercury. In the liquid phase, the carbon steels corroded at a very low rate; mercury did not increase the corrosion rate in any of the solutions tested. In the vapor phase and at the vapor-liquid interface, pitting occurred; the pitting was independent of solution compesition, and was caused mainly by the condensation of oxygenated water from the aqueous wastes. The Determination of the Equilibrium Phase Diagram, Zirconium-Niobium (open access)

The Determination of the Equilibrium Phase Diagram, Zirconium-Niobium

Primary emphasis during the report period was placed on alloy button- ingots arc melting and on preparing these and previously alloyed materials for isothermal annealing. Melting of fill-in alloys continued. Arc-melting weight losses aed as-cast hardness values for the buttons are tabulated along with data from chemical analysis. Also, duta on thickness reduction obtained in cold pressing are included as well as duta on reduction due to cold rolling. From these duta comparative concepts of workability and ductility may be gained. (J.R.D.)

DISSOLVED OXYGEN--INDIGO-CARMINE METHOD (open access)

DISSOLVED OXYGEN--INDIGO-CARMINE METHOD

The indigo-carmine method is a simple, rapid, accurate colorimetric procedure for determining small amounts of dissolved oxygen in water (0 to 50 ppm). A solution of reduced indigo-carmine dye added to a water sample is oxidized by the presence of any dissolved oxygen and changes color. The change in color of the dye is directly proportional to the amount of dissolved oxygen present in the sample and can be determined by using a Johnson color comparator. (W.L.H.)
