A Change from Native Pasture

Cultivated Field Retired

Photograph of part of a 70 acre old cultivated field retired and planted to little bluestem, buffalo, swith, Indian and blue grama grasses about the first of March 1945. Mixture was seeded at rate of about 12 lbs. per acre. This 10 acres was seeded for permanent pasture on clean cotton land. Yield is estimated to be 30 to 35 lbs. combined material per acre. Mr. Briscoe retired 135 acres last year on this farm, 65 acres on another farm that he owns. Next year he plans to plant 20 additional acres of bluestem on a field now in rye and vetch. Driving the tractor is Curtis Hydson, cooperator, 1 mile east of Geary, while his brother, Dillard, rides the combine.

Excellent Crop of Kafir Corn

Photograph of an excellent crop of Kafir corn on contour in former 5 acre area of severely gullied natural draw where owner had never made a crop. An erosion control dam was constructed across the deaw in 1937 and in two years the land was producing crops. To date the draw has silted in approximately 5 feet says Mr. Lucas.

Gully erosion

Photograph of looking downstream from the head of the gully shown in Okla. 19,524-1. Recently fallen masses of earth are seen all along the bottom. The next rainfall run off through the gully will take this earth on into Sandstone Creek. Diversions, drop inlets and gully plugs are used to stop the damage from gullies of this type.

Detention Reservoir Construction

Little Bluestem Planting Erosion Control

Photograph of Little Bluestem planting on formerly cultivated wind eroded land. Grass in foreground is gowin on spot where topsoil was blown away. The grass, although not as vigorous as in other spots, is providing cover and will eventually cover completely. Such land should nto be cultivated but can provide good forage if properly cared for.
