Radioactive Waste Disposal System Periodic Radiation Monitoring Survey. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results (T-612075). Section 2

Radiation levels were determined at all permanently installed monitored points in the disposal area. Radiation levels were found to be generally higher than those measured during the previous test but within Health Physics limitations. (J.R.D.)

Nuclear Battery-Thermocouple Type Summary Report (open access)

Nuclear Battery-Thermocouple Type Summary Report

The potential usefulness of approximately 1300 radioactive isotopes as a heat source for the thermoelectric generator was investigated. Only 47 were found to have the proper characteristics of high specific activity and usable haif-life combined with an easily absorbable radiation. These isotopes are discussed showing possible sources of supply, the hazards involved, and the expected performance. Three large Po/sup 210/ heat sources were designed and constructed (for battery use), including one for the SNAP III generator. One small Tl/sup 204/ test heat source was made by irradiation. Eight thermoelectric generators were developed and two of these were used as thermoelectric batteries. Theoretical equations for non-semiconductor thermoelectric materials and experimental measurements to verify the Thompson and Peltier effects are given. (auth)

Research and Development Reports for Sodium to Sodium Intermediate Heat Exchanger and Sodium to Water Steam Generator (open access)

Research and Development Reports for Sodium to Sodium Intermediate Heat Exchanger and Sodium to Water Steam Generator

Results are presented of research and development work performed in conjunction with the 70-Mw design of a sodium-to- sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a sodium-to-water steam generator. Kanigen plating was substituted for Inconel overlays. A program to evaluate this plating was undertaken. Elimination of tube end ferrules, mechanical behavior of sine wave tubes, tube-to- tube sheet welded connections, metallurgical examination of bimetallic tubes, transition weld test, bayonet tube test, and bayonet tube weld cap test are discussed. Periodic Intercalibration of Temperature Sensing Elements, Core I, Seed I. Test Results T-641306 (open access)

Periodic Intercalibration of Temperature Sensing Elements, Core I, Seed I. Test Results T-641306

BS>Intercalibration data for various temperature sensing elements in the reactor coolant system are obtained and compared with calculated source activity levels and observed channel levels. The readings of 20 of the 62 core thermocouples were either less than 400 deg F, which was off scale on the recorder, or were plus or minus 20 deg F from the calibrating resistance thermometer temperatures. The remainder of the readings were within plus or minus 3% of the temperatures of the calibrating thermometers which were used as a standard of comparison. The main coolant loop resistance thermometers all read within plus or minus 0.2% of the calibrating thermometers. The data from the nuclear source range instrumentation indicated a level ranging from less than 1.7 cps to 31 cps; Channel A indicating the highest. The recorded source activity levels were generally higher than the calculated source activity levels as they should be. There appeared to be no correlation between coolant temperature and source log level source range indications. (N.W.R.)

Periodic Radiation Survey of Reactor Plant Container and Components After Shutdown "F" Survey. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results (T-612076). Section 4

An investigation was conducted to obtain measurements of radiation levels inside the hemispherical heads of the 1-B heat exchanger. The radiation levels were measured at the handholes on two occasions with an interval of 640 hrs between them. A very large increase was noted and could be explained only by the possibility that the measurement survey points were not identical. (J.R.D.)

A RESONANCE IN THE Lambda pi SYSTEM (open access)

A RESONANCE IN THE Lambda pi SYSTEM

The authors report a study of the reaction K{sup -} + p {yields} {Lambda}{sup 0} + {pi}{sup +} + {pi}{sup -} produced by 1.15 Gev/c K{sup -} mesons and observed in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory's 15-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. A preliminary report of these results was presented at the 1960 Rochester Conference. The beam was purified by two velocity spectrometers. A hyperon/observed during the run and the preliminary cross sections for various K{sup -} reactions at 1.15 Bev/c have been reported previously. Reaction (1) was the first one selected for detailed study, because it appeared to take place with relatively large probability and because the event, a 2-prong interaction accompanied by a V, was easily identified. In a volume of the chamber sufficiently restricted so that the scanning efficiency was near 100%, 255 such events were found. These events were measured, and the track data supplied to a computer which tested each event for goodness of fit to various kinematic hypotheses. The possible reactions, the distribution of events, and the corresponding cross sections are given in Table I. An event was placed in a given category of Table I if the {chi}{sup 2} probability for the other hypotheses was < …

THE ORIGIN OF LIFE ON EARTH AND ELSEWHERE. II (open access)

THE ORIGIN OF LIFE ON EARTH AND ELSEWHERE. II

The synthesis of relatively complex organic molecules by ionizing and radical mechanisms (induced by high energy radiations, ultraviolet and electric discharge) from methane, ammonia, water, and hydrogen is described, both theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the molecules which tend to be formed under such random conditions are the very ones which today are the common building blocks in the biological reconstruction of organic material. Such molecules are the amino acids, the simple carboxylic and hydroxy acids, purines, pyrimidines, etc. The appearance of order among such random molecules is induced by two forces, namely, autocatalysis and crystallization. The latter is particularly important in the appearance of highly efficient macromolecular structures and arrangements which are so characteristic of present-day living organisms. Points of contact of these theories with experiment are indicated, and where confirmation has been obtained it is described, and the areas of ignorance, requiring further experimentation, are defined. A first step in a possible test of these prebiotic organic syntheses on other astral bodies has been made by examining the organic material found in meteorites. The nature of the structures appearing therein is indicated.
