Radiative higgs boson decays H {yields} f{anti f}{gamma} (open access)

Radiative higgs boson decays H {yields} f{anti f}{gamma}

Higgs boson radiative decays of the form H {r_arrow} f{ovr f}{gamma} are calculated in the Standard Model using the complete one-loop expressions for the decay amplitudes. Contributions to the radiative width from leptons and light quarks are given. We also present e{ovr e} invariant mass distributions for H {r_arrow} e{ovr e}{gamma}, which illustrate the importance of the photon pole contribution and the effects of the box diagrams. 4 refs., 6 figs.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cluster-Derived Supported Bimetallic Catalysts (open access)

Synthesis and Characterization of Cluster-Derived Supported Bimetallic Catalysts

New procedures have been developed for synthesizing di- and tri-metallic cluster complexes. The chemical properties of the new complexes have been investigated, particularly toward the activation of molecular hydrogen. These complexes were then converted into bi- and tri-metallic nanoparticles on silica and alumina supports. These nanoparticles were characterized by electron microscopy and were then tested for their ability to produce catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons and for the preferential oxidation of CO in the presence of hydrogen. The bi- and tri-metallic nanoparticles exhibited far superior activity and selectivity as hydrogenation catalysts when compared to the individual metallic components. It was found that the addition of tin greatly improved the selectivity of the catalysts for the hydrogenation of polyolefins. The addition of iron improves the catalysts for the selective oxidation of CO by platinum in the presence of hydrogen. The observations should lead to the development of lower cost routes to molecules that can be used to produce polymers and plastics for use by the general public and for procedures to purify hydrogen for use as an alternative energy in the hydrogen economy of the future.

Old pile HCR operating temperatures (open access)

Old pile HCR operating temperatures

A study was made to determine operating temperatures of old pile HCR sheaths. The calculations were performed with the aid of a FORTRAN coded program for the IBM 7090. The difficulty of determining the correct value for the contact coefficient between the HCR and the graphite channel at any point in the channel length resulted in performing the calculations in a parametric style. The independent system parameters were varied during the calculations. These parameters are diametral spacing between the poison rings and the outer aluminum sheath, heat generation rate or reactor power level, the heat transfer contact coefficient between the rod and the graphite channel, and the cooling water temperature or cooling flow rate. For contact coefficients between 200 and 700 Btu/hr -- ft{sup 2} -- {degree}F and for diametral clearances around the poison of 5 mils to 20 mils, the maximum sheath temperature was calculated to vary between 350{degree}F and 650{degree}F. The dependence of sheath temperature upon the rod coolant temperature or coolant flow rate was found to be small enough to be neglected in the normal flow range of 12 gpm to 15 gpm. For a given increase of the average coolant temperature, the maximum sheath temperature increased …

A global overview of risk management of the DOE complex (open access)

A global overview of risk management of the DOE complex

No endeavor is risk-fire and as we realize the inherent risks in society, our only viable solution is to manage the risk. Application of an integrated risk management program of a large technological system like the DOE complex is a difficult, task; but it is the only rational means to optimize the risk-benefit equation. An effective risk management culture-within the DOE complex will in the long run, ensure a consistent response to mitigate identified risks. An effective risk management program provides responsible administrative planning and logical application of the best technical analyses. It requires the involvement of all personnel. Our objective in this paper is to point out broad perspectives that raise concerns about future DOE ask management issues and to suggest some possible remedies.

Osmose Experiment Representativity Studies. (open access)

Osmose Experiment Representativity Studies.

The OSMOSE program aims at improving the neutronic predictions of advanced nuclear fuels through measurements in the MINERVE facility at the CEA-Cadarache (France) on samples containing the following separated actinides: Th-232, U-233, U-234, U-235, U-236, U-238, Np-237, Pu-238, Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu-241, Pu-242, Am-241, Am-243, Cm-244 and Cm-245. The goal of the experimental measurements is to produce a database of reactivity-worth measurements in different neutron spectra for the separated heavy nuclides. This database can then be used as a benchmark for integral reactivity-worth measurements to verify and validate reactor analysis codes and integral cross-section values for the isotopes tested. In particular, the OSMOSE experimental program will produce very accurate sample reactivity-worth measurements for a series of actinides in various spectra, from very thermalized to very fast. The objective of the analytical program is to make use of the experimental data to establish deficiencies in the basic nuclear data libraries, identify their origins, and provide guidelines for nuclear data improvements in coordination with international programs. To achieve the proposed goals, seven different neutron spectra can be created in the MINERVE facility: UO2 dissolved in water (representative of over-moderated LWR systems), UO2 matrix in water (representative of LWRs), a mixed oxide fuel matrix, …
