The envelope is included with the letter. It was sent to Charles when he was in Gallatin, Tennessee visiting kin.

Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "is to provide a cheap, durable, and simple car-coupling, which shall be automatic and positive in its action, and which uses the ordinary link and takes the draft in the same way as the common pin, and which will also fit any car, and will not get out of order from being battered. It consists, mainly, in the peculiar construction of a coupling device, in combination with a spring for holding it to the open or closed position, and co-operating with the same for automatic action" (lines 11-22).

This design consists in "the link having a hooked front end, the lever, spring between the front end of the lever and the link, slide-bar pivoted to the rear end of the lever, the spring-actuated latch on the said bar, having the pin thereon to engage in a socket in the bottom of the car, and the retractile spring at the outer end of the lever" (lines 11-19).

The drum is secured by one end of a cable, the other end of the cable "adapted to be secured to a stump, a ratchet-wheel, pawl, and lever adapted to operate said drum" (lines 18-20).
