S-11 and S-20 photocathode research activity. Rev. 1 (open access)

S-11 and S-20 photocathode research activity. Rev. 1

The S-1 semi-transparent photocathode is the only one that can be used to study the 1.06 ..mu..m neodynium laser pulses of less than 10 ps duration. We first reviewed the recent results obtained at the Paris Observatory (research sponsored by the CEA), and then we tried to determine the role of the main constituents and their contributions in photoemission.

O(18) revived (open access)

O(18) revived

We present an O(18) theory which is pertubatively unifiable and which accounts for the absence of right-handed families in the low-energy world. The model gives rise to dramatic predictions for proton decay and for the Z/sup 0/ width.

Ab initio calculations of the optical properties of ions in glass (open access)

Ab initio calculations of the optical properties of ions in glass

There is interest in the optical properties of ions in insulating glasses for various applications. This paper addresses the task of predicting optical properties of ions in glass from first principles given only the physics of the constituent atoms. The prospects for developing such ab initio-computation procedures are gleaned from examining the progress made in understanding the properties of dopant ions in crystals. It is probable that in 20 years, there will be reliable procedures for predicting optical properties of ions in crystals, but the development of corresponding procedures for complex glasses is a herculean task. The use of computer simulations is addressed. (DLC)

Absolute dipole gamma-ray strength functions for /sup 176/Lu (open access)

Absolute dipole gamma-ray strength functions for /sup 176/Lu

We have derived absolute dipole strength-function information for /sup 176/Lu from an average resonance capture study of /sup 175/Lu with 2-keV neutrons, and from neutron capture cross-section measurements with neutrons from 30 keV to about 1 MeV. We found that we needed to increase our previous estimate of the relative M1/E1 strengths near 5 MeV by a factor of 3, and to revise downward the absolute magnitude of our E1 strength function. We accomplished the latter, while still maintaining continuity with the photonuclear data, by adjusting the one free parameter in our line shape. The present E1 and M1 strengths now seem correct both near the neutron separation energy and also around 1 MeV.

Accelerator and Fusion Research Division: summary of activities, 1983 (open access)

Accelerator and Fusion Research Division: summary of activities, 1983

The activities described in this summary of the Accelerator and Fusion Research Division are diverse, yet united by a common theme: it is our purpose to explore technologically advanced techniques for the production, acceleration, or transport of high-energy beams. These beams may be the heavy ions of interest in nuclear science, medical research, and heavy-ion inertial-confinement fusion; they may be beams of deuterium and hydrogen atoms, used to heat and confine plasmas in magnetic fusion experiments; they may be ultrahigh-energy protons for the next high-energy hadron collider; or they may be high-brilliance, highly coherent, picosecond pulses of synchrotron radiation.

Accuracy of Eyewitness Memory Under Leading Questioning: The Effects of Hypnosis and Anxiety (open access)

Accuracy of Eyewitness Memory Under Leading Questioning: The Effects of Hypnosis and Anxiety

Hypnosis has gained substantial support in the psychological community, as well as related health professions. The intense renewal of interest in hypnosis has also affected our legal-judicial system. Many police investigators trained in hypnosis operate from an exactcopy memory theory. They claim eyewitness eyewitness retrieve veridically stored memory traces from long-term memory, if questioned under hypnosis. Conversely, other researchers ascribe to a reconstructive memory theory. They believe hypnosis increases the likelihood of eliciting erroneous memories from eyewitnesses, especially under leading questioning. The purpose of the present investigation was to test the effects of hypnotic induction and anxiety on the accuracy of subjects' memory for eyewitnessed events when questioned with leading, non-leading, and embedded misinformation questions.

Accurate Empathy and Rorschach Interpretation (open access)

Accurate Empathy and Rorschach Interpretation

Although the Rorschach is one of the most widely used psychological assessment techniques, its empirical support has been equivocal. One possible explanation for this lack of empirical support is the tendency for researchers to study only the assessment tool with little regard for the clinician using it. The current study examined one clinician variable (empathy) and its relationship to accuracy of interpretation of the Rorschach. The literature regarding Rorschach theory and research and empathy theory and research was reviewed in an attempt to clarify the similarities between empathy as an important factor in psychotherapy and its importance in the assessment process. The present study measured empathy by using the Davis Empathy Questionnaire and a Taped Excerpt Response Measure.

Achieving cold antiprotons in a Penning trap (open access)

Achieving cold antiprotons in a Penning trap

The current state of proton/electron trapping sensitivity at Washington requires only small numbers (less than or equal to 100) of anti p be trapped in order to achieve high signal to noise ratios. We therefore investigated a anti p trapping scheme based on stopping foils which, in the simplest case, require no auxiliary decelerator/cooler past a LEAR (or equivalent) stage. Cooling of the trapped particles could be accomplished via the damping provided by an external resistor as in all of the other experiments. The rate of this cooling would be rather low, even in the most ideal case, and likely would be much lower when the electrostatic anharmonicity of such a trap is realistically considered. We thereby examined a possible alternate cooling scheme, electron cooling with a buffer gas of cold electrons, in order to improve the cooling rate. 18 references.

Advances in HTGR spent fuel treatment technology (open access)

Advances in HTGR spent fuel treatment technology

GA Technologies, Inc. has been investigating the burning of spent reactor graphite under Department of Energy sponsorship since 1969. Several deep fluidized bed burners have been used at the GA pilot plant to develop graphite burning techniques for both spent fuel recovery and volume reduction for waste disposal. Since 1982 this technology has been extended to include more efficient circulating bed burners. This paper includes updates on high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel cycle options and current results of spent fuel treatment testing for fluidized and advanced circulating bed burners.
