Gas-cooled fast breeder reactor steady-state irradiation testing program (open access)

Gas-cooled fast breeder reactor steady-state irradiation testing program

The requirements for the gas-cooled fast breeder reactor irradiation program are specified, and an irradiation program plan which satisfies these requirements is presented. The irradiation program plan consists of three parts and includes a schedule and a preliminary cost estimate: (1) a steady-state irradiation program, (2) irradiations in support of the design basis transient test program, and (3) irradiations in support of the GRIST-2 safety test program. Data from the liquid metal fast breeder reactor program are considered, and available irradiation facilities are examined.

The Law of Church and State: Public Aid to Sectarian Schools (open access)

The Law of Church and State: Public Aid to Sectarian Schools

One of the most difficult issues of constitutional law concerns the extent to which the establishment of religion clause of the First Amendment imposes constraints on the provision of public aid to private sectarian schools. This report gives a brief overview of the evolution of the Court’s interpretation of the establishment clause in this area and itemizes the categories of aid that have been addressed by the Court and held to be constitutionally permissible or impermissible, both at the elementary and secondary school level and at the college level.

Advanced fuel cell development progress report, April--June 1977. [Electrolyte mixtures of Li/sub 2/CO/sub 3/-K/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ containing rod-shaped particles of. beta. -LiAlO/sub 2/] (open access)

Advanced fuel cell development progress report, April--June 1977. [Electrolyte mixtures of Li/sub 2/CO/sub 3/-K/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ containing rod-shaped particles of. beta. -LiAlO/sub 2/]

This report describes advanced fuel cell research and development activities at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) during the period April--June 1977. These efforts have been directed toward understanding and improvement of molten-carbonate-electrolyte fuel cells operating at temperatures near 923 K. A primary focus of the work has been on developing electrolyte structures which have high strength and conductivity, as well as good electrolyte retention, and on developing methods of synthesis for electrolyte structures that are amenable to mass production. A low temperature synthesis which produces material having rodlike particles of ..beta..--LiAlO/sub 2/ has been refined and is now used for preparing electrolytes. Cell testing is essential for understanding and evaluating individual component behavior and the interactions of the components under realistic operating conditions. Most of the testing to date has been conducted in a 7-cm (2/sup 3///sub 4/-in.)-dia cylindrical cell with Type 316 stainless steel housings and current collectors, a nickel anode, and a nickel oxide cathode. Testing has begun to probe the roles of anode, cathode, and electrolyte in cell performance, and has provided verification of an acceptable technique for prevention of seal corrosion for at least 1400 hours. Components evaluation and development include post-test analysis and evaluation of cell …

Sandia Sodium Purification Loop (SNAPL) description and operations manual (open access)

Sandia Sodium Purification Loop (SNAPL) description and operations manual

Sandia's Sodium Purification Loop was constructed to purify sodium for fast reactor safety experiments. An oxide impurity of less than 10 parts per million is required by these in-pile experiments. Commercial, reactor grade sodium is purchased in 180 kg drums. The sodium is melted and transferred into the unit. The unit is of a loop design and purification is accomplished by ''cold trapping.'' Sodium purified in this loop has been chemically analysed at one part per million oxygen by weight. 5 refs., 22 figs., 7 tabs.

Lagrangian with off-shell vertices and field redefinitions (open access)

Lagrangian with off-shell vertices and field redefinitions

Meson exchange diagrams following from a lagrangian with off-shell meson-nucleon couplings are compared with those generated from conventional dynamics. The off-shell interactions can be transformed away with the help of a nucleon field redefinition. Contributions to the NN- and 3N-potentials and nonminimal contact e.m. meson-exchange currents are discussed, mostly for an important case of scalar meson exchange.

Alarm annunciation in a graphical environment (open access)

Alarm annunciation in a graphical environment

Well-designed graphical user interfaces, such as Microsoft Windows{trademark} or UNIX{trademark} -- based X-Windows, provide a capability for enhanced display of security alarm information. Conversely, a poorly designed interface can quickly overwhelm an operator. This paper describes types of graphical information that can be displayed and offers guidance on how to best display that information. Limits are proposed for the complexity of the user interface, and guidelines are suggested for the display of maps and sensors.

Intra-building telecommunications cabling standards for Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico (open access)

Intra-building telecommunications cabling standards for Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico

This document establishes a working standard for all telecommunications cable installations at Sandia National Laboratories, New Mexico. It is based on recent national commercial cabling standards. The topics addressed are Secure and Open/Restricted Access telecommunications environments and both twisted-pair and optical-fiber components of communications media. Some of the state-of-the-art technologies that will be supported by the intrabuilding cable infrastructure are Circuit and Packet Switched Networks (PBX/5ESS Voice and Low-Speed Data), Local Area Networks (Ethernet, Token Ring, Fiber and Copper Distributed Data Interface), and Wide Area Networks (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). These technologies can be delivered to every desk and can transport data at rates sufficient to support all existing applications (such as Voice, Text and graphics, Still Images, Full-motion Video), as well as applications to be defined in the future.
