2-MW plasmajet facility thermal tests of concrete. [PWR and BWR] (open access)

2-MW plasmajet facility thermal tests of concrete. [PWR and BWR]

A test was made in the 2-Megawatt Plasmajet Facility to obtain experimental data relative to the thermal response of concrete to incident heat flux. 14.6 cm diameter by 8.0 cm long concrete cylinders were positioned in a supersonic flow of heated nitrogen from an arc heater. The end of the concrete cylinders impacted by the flow were subjected to heat fluxes in the range of 0.13 to 0.35 kW/cm/sup 2/. Measurements included cold wall surface heat flux and pressure distributions, surface and indepth temperatures, ablation rates, and surface emission spectrographs. The test was part of the Sandia light water reactor safety research program and complements similar tests made in the Radiant Heat Facility at heat fluxes from 0.03 to 0.12 kW/cm/sup 2/. A description of the tests and a tabulation of test data are included.

Adsorption Induced Losses in Interfacial Cohesion (open access)

Adsorption Induced Losses in Interfacial Cohesion

A model for interfacial cohesion is developed which describes the loss in the strength of an interface due to the segregation and adsorption of impurities on it. Distinctions are made between interface separations that occur too rapidly for any significant redistribution of adsorbing matter to take place and separations that are slow enough to allow full adsorption equilibrium. Expressions for the total work of complete decohesion are presented for both cases. The results are applied to well-known model adsorption isotherms and some experimental data for grain boundary adsorption of phosphorus in iron is analyzed with respect to the losses in intergranular cohesion.

Alfven instability and micromagnetic islands in a plasma with sheared magnetic fields (open access)

Alfven instability and micromagnetic islands in a plasma with sheared magnetic fields

The normal mode equation for coupled drift and Alfven waves in a finite-..beta.. nonuniform plasma with a sheared magnetic field is solved, in the slab geometry, to investigate the instability of slow Alfven waves. It is shown, that, besides having an appreciable growth rate, the instability also produces microscopic ''tearing'' of the rational surfaces which has important implications for anomalous transport.

Analysis of the method of Streeter and Wylie for multidimensional wave propagation (open access)

Analysis of the method of Streeter and Wylie for multidimensional wave propagation

The method of Streeter and Wylie was developed to allow calculation of two- and three-dimensional transients using existing one-dimensional ''water-hammer'' codes for waves in fluid piping networks. The method is analyzed in terms of the effective multidimensional finite-difference scheme it generates. Subject to certain modelling restrictions, the method produces a first-order accurate scheme in the linear-acoustic, constant-properties approximation. Despite the fact that conventional multidimensional techniques are far more efficient, the method continues to be used in the engineering community.

Annual collection and storage of solar energy for the heating of buildings. Report No. 2. Annual progress report, May 1976--July 1977 (open access)

Annual collection and storage of solar energy for the heating of buildings. Report No. 2. Annual progress report, May 1976--July 1977

A new system for year-round collection and storage of solar heated water for heating of buildings has been designed and constructed at the University of Virginia. The system is composed of an energy storage sub-system which stores hot water in an underground pool and of a solar collector sub-system which acts not only to collect solar energy throughout the year but also to limit the evaporative and convective heat losses from the storage system. The annual collection and storage system began operation in late February 1977. Data are presented which illustrates the transient heat transfer which occurs during the start-up phase of operation. Thermal performance results are presented illustrating the efficiency of the solar collector and the variation of solar energy input to storage during a typical day's operation in May. Data are also presented which show the transient build-up of energy storage in the earth which surrounds the storage pool. An analog model has been developed to analyze the transient energy phenomena which occur within the earth surrounding the pool. These include transient heat losses from the pool to the earth and energy storage within the earth. Results of the analog model for idealized conditions are confirmed by exact …
