Oral History Interview with Raymond Bunfill, May 29, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Raymond Bunfill. Bunfill went into the Army in September, 1944 and trained at Camp Fannin, Texas. He landed on Leyte in late March where he was assigned to the 108th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division. While in the Philippines, Bunfill served on Leyte, Mindanao and Panay during operations to clear Japanese resistance. When the war ended, he travelled with his unit to Korea for occupation duty. When the division was sent home in January, 1946, Bunfill did not have enough points so he stayed in Korea. Bunfill returned to the US in September, 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ayoko Lefteau. Lefteau was born in 1935, in Japan. Her father worked at the Kadena Air Force Base. Lefteau speaks of life growing up in Naha, Okinawa during wartime. After the burning of Naha, her family was transferred to a survival camp in Nakijin. Her father disappeared searching for extended family, and Lefteau was given shelter, food and protection by the American GIs. She shares how her family re-established life in Naha, and associated with the American occupation troops after the war.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Mario Cardillo. Cardillo joined the Navy in 1942. He was assigned to the USS YMS-13. Beginning late 1942 they traveled through the Mediterranean for two years. They swept mines and participated in four major landings, including Sicily and Anzio in Italy and Marseilles, France. Cardillo served as an airplane spotter. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Tommy Blake. Blake joined the Army Air Forces in 1943. He completed gunnery, airplane mechanic and flight training. Blake served as P-38 pilot with the 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, 5th Air Force. Beginning in 1944, he flew missions in support of the Philippines Campaign. After the war ended, Blake completed aerial reconnaissance over Okinawa and Korea. He returned to the US and received his discharge in May of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Gordon Wilkinson. Wilkinson was drafted into the Army in January 1945. He completed basic training in Camp Wheeler, Georgia. He provides details of his experiences in training. He served in the Luzon, Philippines campaign. They first landed in Eniwetok and picked up a convoy then headed into the Philippines. He was a part of the fifth replacement and later the 43rd Infantry Division and Headquarters Company. They were set up in Cabanatuan. Then they traveled to Japan in September 1945. The 43rd Infantry Division was deactivated and Wilkinson joined the 1st Cavalry Division in Osaka, and he was assigned to the 302nd Recon. He provides detail of his time in Osaka. He left Japan in December 1945 and was shipped to Fort Stevens, Oregon where he re-enlisted. He attended Counter Intelligence School in Baltimore, Maryland. He was then stationed in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was in the service 29 years, and retired as Chief Warrant Officer Four.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Francis Sheahen. Sheahen joined the Naval Reserve in Chicago as an Apprentice Seaman in 1940. He transferred to the Baltimore Reserve Unit to complete Naval Academy prep school. Upon completion he entered the Academy in April of 1941 and graduated with an engineering degree with the Class of 1945. He provides some detail of his experiences in the Academy. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an ensign. From there he was sent to Jacksonville, Florida for aviation orientation. Upon course completion he was ordered to Little Creek, Virginia to assemble a crew in order to take command of the USS USS USS LSM-117. They were bound for Guam to deliver a load of dredging parts, then up to Saipan where they boarded a unit of Marines to deliver them to the invasion of Okinawa in April 1945. He provides detail of these missions. Their crew also took troops to Japan. He was ordered to decommission the ship in June of 1946. He was discharged around 1948.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Fred Marron. Marron joined the Army in June 1943, volunteered for the Airborne, and went to Georgia for basic and airborne training. He went overseas to France and was assigned to the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division. He remained with the unit until the war in Europe ended, then volunteered to go to the Pacific. On the way to the US for more training, the war ended and Marron was among the first soldiers home from overseas after the war. He was discharged in December, 1945 and became a police officer in Utica, New York.

Oral History Interview with Arthur Downard, May 17, 2017

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Arthur Downard. Downard was drafted in November 1942. He was sent to Camp Dodge in Des Moines, Iowa for basic training and then on to Fresno, California. From there he was sent to Denver, Colorado for Air Corps administrative school, where he became an instructor of officers until November 1944. In January 1945 he received orders to go to the Pacific and serve as administrator to the lab technicians and photo interpreters of aerial photography. He served with the 4th Photographic Procurement Detachment. He had thirty enlisted men and six officers he worked with. His group was sent to Fort McKinley in Manila, Philippines to make an aerial map of the southeastern third of China. Their job was to develop the film and make the map. He describes life in Manila. He was there until April 1946 to complete the map, and was discharged in Denver.

Oral History Interview with Harold Buell and Warren Taylor, May 12, 1990

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Harold Buell and Warren Taylor. Buell discusses being aboard USS Enterprise (CV-6) during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. Buell served as a Dauntless dive bomber pilot. Ingram’s (interviewer) primary interest in the battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57). Ingram also interviews Warren Taylor. Taylor served as a gunnery officer aboard the South Dakota. Taylor discusses much about gunnery at sea: targeting, target spotting, plotting, etc. He also recalls an explosion aboard ship while replenishing ammunition. Taylor also recalls going ashore in Japan after the surrender.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Lazarich. Lazarich joined the Coast Guard in August 1942 and trained at New York. His first assignment was aboard a patrol boat in New York Harbor. He then went to gunnery school in Florida before shipping out to New Guinea to serve aboard an Amry tug boat. He also participated in the campaign to liberate the Philippines and recalls being in a minefield off Borneo. He also went to Okinawa and eventually Japan before returing to the US in December. Lazarich elected to be discharged in March, 1946 and then joined the New York City Fire Department.

Oral History Interview with John O'Leary, May 4, 2018

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John O’Leary. O’Leary joined the Marine Corps in February of 1943. He completed Aircraft Mechanic School, and served with the 1st Marine Division. In February of 1944 he traveled aboard the USS Barnes (CVE-20) to Espiritu Santo, where he was stationed at a Marine fighter airstrip base. O’Leary installed water injection on Corsair planes, enhancing the performance of the plane. He later traveled to Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Bougainville. They transported Seabees. From September of 1944 through the spring of 1945, they participated in the Battle of Peleliu and worked on the island, where O’Leary served as stretcher-bearer and aircraft mechanic on P-40s and B-24s. He returned to the US and was discharged in mid to late 1945.

He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 382nd Infantry Regiment, 96th Infantry Division. He provides details of his basic training. The 382nd participated in the Battle of Leyte from October to December of 1944 and the Battle of Okinawa from April to June of 1945. Webb returned to the US and was discharged in January of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Earl Carlin, May 15, 2018

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Earl Carlin. Carlin joined the Navy in June of 1943. He served as a Seaman aboard the USS LCI(R)-472. Carlin oversaw steering the ship, as well as the annunciator and compass on board. They transported troops to Hawaii, the Aleutians, Kwajalein, Eniwetok and New Guinea. They also traveled to Tinian conducting amphibious demolition work. Carlin did get involved in battle at Guam, after the invasion, when they were under air attack for forty hours. They aided the crew of the LCI(G)-468 after it sunk in June of 1944. They bombarded the beaches at Saipan, where he recounts the ocean being red from the casualties in the water. They continued their service into Leyte, Lingayen, Manila and Okinawa. Carlin returned to the US and was discharged in December of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Thomas Jordan. Jordan joined the Navy on 15 December 1941. Beginning February of 1942, he served on the deck force and as aviation mechanic aboard the USS Wichita (CA-45). In March, they were assigned to Task Force 39, to reinforce the British Home Fleet based in Scapa Flow. In November, they participated in the Naval Battle of Casablanca. In April of 1943 they traveled to Pearl Harbor and Adak, Alaska, where they were assigned to the amphibious force liberating the Aleutian Islands from Japanese control. Throughout the Pacific, the Wichita covered landings on numerous islands, completing 21 bombarding engagements, including the Battles of Saipan, Guam, Tinian and Okinawa. Jordan returned to the US and was discharged in February of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Hiroshi Sakahara. Sakahara is second generation Japanese-American. He provides some details of his family history and life growing up in Tacoma, Washington during the Great Depression. In 1941 he joined the Army and volunteered for the 442nd Infantry Combat Team, 5th Army. They fought in Belgium and Italy on the front lines opposite the Germans. He served as an ammunition carrier and later carried the Browning Automatic Rifle. In the Spring of 1944 through May of 1945, Sakahara pulled guard duty until Germany surrendered. He was discharged in June of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Richard D. Buehrle. He volunteered to join the Navy in 1943 after he graduated from high school. Expecting to have a permanent duty assignment in Australia, he was, instead, called to be a destroyer replacement sailor in New Guinea on the USS Smith (DD-378). He served first as a five-inch gun shell retriever, then as a signalman on the bridge. He relates the story of his selection as a signalman. He also describes living conditions aboard the ship, his clothing, as well as the mail service. He talks about his friendship with Donald Kent. He also mentions Captain Stout. He discusses an attempt to land Marines on Arawe. He describes an attack by Japanese aircraft and kamikazes in the Philippines. He shares anecdotes about Nagasaki and the Japanese surrender. He explains his reason for not remaining in the Navy after the war.

Oral History Interview with Ernest Major, May 31, 2008

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Ernest Major. Major volunteered for the Navy just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Upon completion of diesel school, he became a PT boat motor mechanic. After getting injured in a boating accident, he spent nine months recovering and was then assigned to PT-309 in Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 22. Following stops in North Africa and France in early 1943, he experienced a close encounter with Italian ships at Sardinia before arriving at his base on Corsica. Using radar, the PT boat conducted night patrols along the coast of Italy, torpedoing and sinking five supply barges. His unit captured an Italian MAS boat attempting to smuggle out German officers from Elba, and they also transported French commandos to Southern France. After being stationed in Golfe-Juan, Major returned to the States and was later sent to the Philippines. He finished the war at Okinawa, surviving a typhoon and heartily celebrating V-J Day. Major was discharged in December 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with George Croft. Croft joined the Navy in February of 1941. He completed Aviation Radio School before working at Pearl Harbor. He later was assigned to the USS McFarland (AVD-14). They transported aviation gas to the neighboring islands. Croft witnessed the Japanese attack on 7 December from the veranda of the US Naval Hospital on Pearl Harbor. He was later assigned to the USS Vega (AK-17), where he served in the engine room and Radio Shack as radioman. They participated in the Aleutian Islands Campaign. In early 1944 they transported cargo from San Francisco to support Pacific operations in the Gilbert Islands, Marianas and Okinawa. In June of 1944 Croft was transferred to the USS Hermitage (AP-54), transporting troops from the US to New Guinea. He was discharged in 1947.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Oliver Massey. Massey joined the Marine Corps at the age of sixteen. After boot camp, Massey was assigned to Fighter Squadron 2 (VF-2) where he began training as an aircraft mechanic at North Island Naval Air Station. In January of 1940 he was assigned to Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 231 (VMSB-231) Ewa, Hawaii and he describes the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In early 1942, the squadron flew the SB2U-3 Scout Bomber in the Battle of Midway and Massey briefly describes the battle and noted limitations of the aircraft. After returning to the US, he went aboard an escort carrier that took planes to Guadalcanal. He was later stationed at various bases and tells of working on various types of planes including the Grumman F6F fighter and the Douglas C-54 transport. He continued serving in the Korean War, flying with several generals as the crew chief. Massey retired as a Master Sergeant in 1959.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Thomas Nelson. Nelson joined the Navy in 1941 and served aboard the USS San Francisco (CA-38). He was on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 and witnessed the Japanese attack. He provides details of this experience. He worked as a 1st Class Radio Operator aboard a TBF. On 26 October 1942 his plane was shot down during the Battle of Santa Cruz Island and he was captured by the Japanese. He shares stories of life in a Japanese POW camp, and sabotaging trains, barges and a metallurgy plant. In April of 1944 he was discovered alive by the Red Cross and released following the war.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Bud Rohling. Rohling recalls volunteering for the service shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was called up in March, 1942 and went into flight training. After training, he was assigned to the 3rd Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. Rohling's first job was to fly over the coast of northern Canada and Alaska and take photographs. He mentions also flying over the coast of Russia and taking a few photographs there as well. From there, he was assigned to Gush Kara, India. Rohling's unit ferried fuel to China and they flew photo recon missions along the coast. They did that for seven months and then went back to McDill Air Force Base, Florida. Once he returned, Rohling was assigned to B-29 bombers. His next assignment was on Saipan where he ran photo recon missions over the home islands of Japan. Rohling describes participating in some fire bombing missions over Japan. Rohling recalls photographing the atomic attack on Nagasaki. When the war ended, Rohling had enough points to rotate home, but instead made a request to join General Curtis LeMay's headquartes staff and hopefully stay in the Marianas. He ended up …
