Influence of access hole parameters on neutron moisture probe readings (open access)

Influence of access hole parameters on neutron moisture probe readings

Computing soil moisture content with a neutron probe requires use of a calibration curve that considers the thermal neutron capture cross section of the hole liner as well as the hole diameter. The influence of steel, polyvinyl chloride, and aluminum casings that fit 0.051 to 0.102-hole diameters was determined by comparison with neutron probe readings in uncased holes of corresponding diameters. Eccentricity of probe location was considered a potentially significant variable. The relationship between hole diameter and count rate also was investigated. The experiment was run in disturbed Bandelier tuff with an average dry density of 1.2 g . cm/sup -3/ and moisture content of 1.3 to 35.5% by volume. The casing material and hole diameter influenced the probe readings significantly, whereas eccentric location of the probe did not. Regression analyses showed an almost perfect inverse linear correlation between hole diameter and count rate.

Assessment of powdered activated carbon addition to anaerobic digesters at Salt Lake City, Utah (open access)

Assessment of powdered activated carbon addition to anaerobic digesters at Salt Lake City, Utah

The Salt Lake City Water Reclamation Plant has added powdered activated carbon to its influent wastewater since January 1977. Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory has gathered and analyzed operational data from the treatment plant in an effort to identify beneficial effects of the carbon. Benefits occurring during anaerobic digestion were of principal interest. Three potential areas of enhanced treatment were investigated: reduced solids in the primary clarifier effluent; increased anaerobic digester gas production; and increased sludge stabilization rate. Review of the data from the Salt Lake City plant indicates that carbon did not significantly affect these aspects of the plant operation. However, the carbon dose rate was generally lower than that used in other carbon addition studies. Therefore, data from Salt Lake City can be interpreted to mean only that carbon does not produce the above benefits at low doses. Potential benefits identified by other investigators using higher carbon dose rates have not been invalidated.

Extraction of tritium from liquid lithium by permeation (open access)

Extraction of tritium from liquid lithium by permeation

This paper assesses a method for extracting tritium from liquid lithium for specific application to the conceptual laser fusion reactor that uses a continuous lithium ''waterfall.'' The tritium diffuses through a refractory metal that contains a getter and is then stored in a hydride-forming alloy. There are various uncertainties with this method including helium-4 extraction, unknown impurities that may accumulate in liquid lithium, the effects of these impurities on tritium separation, and the maintenance of tritium-contaminated equipment. Our study indicates that major tritium losses will occur during equipment maintenance rather than as a result of permeation losses through the primary vessel.

Liquid-fluidized-bed heat exchanger design parameters (open access)

Liquid-fluidized-bed heat exchanger design parameters

Liquid-fluidized-bed heat exchangers prevent scale accumulation on heat transfer surfaces and reduce the required heat transfer surface when scaling fluids, such as geothermal water, are used as the primary or working fluid. Liquid-fluidized-bed heat exchangers, principles of operation, and design parameters are described. Horizontal and vertical assemblies are discussed, including problems encountered with both designs. Bed-side heat transfer coefficients are given for limited cases, and a correlation is provided for calculating heat transfer coefficients for horizontal assemblies. A design example for a 60 kW/sub (e)/ (60 kW/sub (electric)/ preheater is included.

Community Systems Program: Its Goals and Accomplishments, 1978 (open access)

Community Systems Program: Its Goals and Accomplishments, 1978

The Community Systems Program is concerned with conserving energy and scarce fuels through new methods of satisfying the energy needs of American communities. These programs are designed to develop innovative ways of combining current, emerging, and advanced technologies into Integrated Community Energy Systems (ICES) that could furnish any, or all, of the energy-using services of a community. The key goals of the Community System Program then, are to identify, evaluate, develop, demonstrate, and deploy energy systems and community designs that will optimally meet the needs of various communities. Integrated systems offer considerable potential for fuel substitution, thereby allowing the use of non-scarce fuel resources that would not be economically usable in smaller unintegrated systems. Input energy sources for such systems may include low-grade waste heat, solid and liquid wastes, solar and geothermal heat, seawater heat dissipation, and use of less-scarce fuels, such as coal and biomass. A Grid-Connected ICES uses a central co-generation plant and distribution system to provide heating, cooling, and electrical energy services. During 1977, contracts for the following Grid-Connected ICES (G-C ICES) demonstration teams were negotiated: City of Independence, Missouri; Clark University; City of Trenton, New Jersey; Health Education Authority of Louisiana (HEAL); and University of Minnesota. …
