1-1/2-Loop Semiscale Isothermal Test Program: Program and System Description in Support of Experiment Data Reports.

The isothermal test series is part of the Semiscale Blowdown and Emergency Core Cooling (ECC) Project conducted by Aerojet Nuclear Company for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The test series consisted of ten blowdown tests and five hot-wall tests with emphasis on emergency core coolant delivery. The blowdown tests were conducted to investigate the effects of lower plenum geometry, heat transfer configuration, ECC injection location, downcomer gap size, and break size.

3-D slug flow heat transfer analysis of coupled coolant cells in finite LMFBR bundles (open access)

3-D slug flow heat transfer analysis of coupled coolant cells in finite LMFBR bundles

A three-dimensional single region slug flow heat transfer analysis for finite LMFBR rod bundles using a classical analytical solution method has been performed. According to the isolated single cell analysis, the results show that the peripheral clad temperature variation as well as the thermal entrance length are strongly dependent upon the degree of irregularity displayed by various coolant geometries. Since under the present LMFBR conditions, fully-developed temperature fields may hardly be established in such characteristic rod bundle regions, a 3-D heat transfer analysis seems to be mandatory. This implies that the results of fully developed heat transfer analyses are by far too conservative.

I-44 Skelly By-Pass, Highway 75 Okmulgee Bee-Line, and the City of Tulsa

Photograph of an example of the vast land needed to construct modern highways to serve metropolitan areas like Tulsa. The foreground shows the I-44 Skelly By-Pass and Highway 75 Okmulgee Bee-Line, while the city of Tulsa is in the background. The back of the photograph proclaims, “Intersection of I-44 (Skelly By-Pass) and Highway 75 (Okmulgee Bee-Line). Tulsa in background. Shows the vast areas of land needed to construct modern highways to serve large metropolitan areas.”

120-keV Neutral-Beam Injection System Development (open access)

120-keV Neutral-Beam Injection System Development

The neutral-beam injection systems for the next generation of U. S. fusion experiments (TFTR, MX, Doublet III) have requirements that considerably exceed the present state of development. TFTR, for example, desires 20 MW of 120-keV deuterium atoms in pulses of 0.5-sec duration. The neutral-beam systems needed to meet these demands will be large and complex and will require much development effort. In order to develop components for these new systems, a new, large test facility was constructed. The vacuum system, which has a volume in excess of 170,000 liters, will handle the pulsed gas loads by volume expansion; the gas will be pumped out in the one-minute intervals between pulses. The power-supply philosophy and specification are discussed in an accompanying paper. A mini-computer system will be used to monitor and control the power supplies and to diagnose the beam. Of the beam-line components, a plasma source and 120-kV accelerator structure which are under construction are discussed. A new long-pulse version of our 15-cm-diam high-current plasma source has been developed. Significant improvements have been made by re-orienting the filaments, so that they produce closed magnetic field lines near the wall, and by changing the shape and position of the anode. This …

200-GeV ISA with room temperature magnets (open access)

200-GeV ISA with room temperature magnets

A conceptual design study of 200-GeV proton intersecting storage accclerators with room temperature magnets is presented. The key to this study was thc desire to keep the electric power consumptiom to an acceptable level (40 MW). The design has been optimized by choosing small-gap (4 cm) aluminum coil dipoles operating at about 15 kG. The luminosity of this machine is limited to about 10/sup 32/ cm-/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ by transverse space-charg e effects. An order of magnitude higher luminositics can be obtained by adding a booster of modest cost. A novel vacuum system using distributed Ti-sublimation pumps results in considerable savings. A cost comparison with a high-luminosity superconducting machine is given. (auth)

325-B FACILITY (open access)

325-B FACILITY

Due to the continuing high air sample results over the past six months, a thorough review of conditions and procedures was felt necessary for 325-B facility. A complete survey of the facility was made, looking for possible or definite problems. A discussion about procedures and conditions was held with all Radiation Monitoring personnel involved with the facility. The following items we felt needed attention to improve the working environment for the personnel in the facility. 1. Recommend glovebox be decontaminated and gloves changed to reduce dose rates. 2. Repair fume hood for proper airflow. 3. Move slurp jug inside fume hood and provide lead shielding. 4. Change storage of samples outside of cells to reduce dose rates. 5. Recommend contaminated waste from cells be bagged when removed through transfer tray. 6. Recommend fume hoods be installed at cell transfer trays. During a recent house cleaning, personnel in 325-B took action to correct items number 1 through 5, which leaves item number 6 to be considered. The need for fume hoods is based on high air sample results. These fume hoods would be very helpful in the unpackaging of contaminated samples. The removal of samples from the cell requires good air …
