Development of Techniques for Power Production From Mixed Fission Products (open access)

Development of Techniques for Power Production From Mixed Fission Products

"An investigation was made into the various processes for the fixation of mixed fission products as solids in order to determine the extent they could be utilized as heat sources for thermoelectric generators. Generators of up to ten watts can be designed and built with state-of-art'' thermoelectric materials and mixed fission products soon to be available from the ldaho Falls calcination pilot plant. Mixed fission products from other processes and plants to be on stream'' in this decade will be capable of fueling practical generators into the kilowatt range using thermoelectric materials available in the same time period. A survey was made on current research and development efforts on waste fixation processes. Studies showed that a wide range of power densities (from 0.002 to 0.2 watts per cubic centimeter) will be available from calcined fission product wasted. An experimental program for the consolidation of low density, Idaho Chemical Processing Plant alumina type wastes is reviewed. Preliminary results indicated that densification factors of three to four are readily obtainable for such wastes."

The Development of Uranium Carbide as a Nuclear Fuel: Final Report (open access)

The Development of Uranium Carbide as a Nuclear Fuel: Final Report

From introduction: This is the final report on uranium carbide studies sponsored by the United States Atomic Energy Commission and performed by United Nuclear Corporation at its New Haven Research Laboratories during the period from May 1959 to January 1964. The work was part of the Commission's Fuel Cycle Development Program aimed at lowering the cost of nuclear power by improving fuel cycle technology. At the inception of this program in 1959, some work was in progress on uranium carbide. Little was known of making a satisfactory fuel in quantity or of how it would perform either in-pile or out-of-pile. The United Nuclear program was designed with no specific reactor in mind and was aimed at furnishing information over a broad spectrum.

Echelle Spectroscopy. Seventeenth Quarterly Progress Report (open access)

Echelle Spectroscopy. Seventeenth Quarterly Progress Report

This is the seventeenth quarterly report on our echelle project, as numbered above. Our work this quarter has to some extent been directed towards the Spectroscopy Symposium held at Argonne National Laboratory on February 15, 16, and 17. This report consists principally of brief abstracts of the two papers given at this meeting. Progress since the last quarterly report included completion of the echelle comparator calibration, and the successful production and photographing of the desired spectra of praseodymium and erbium in strong magnetic fields. Considerable interest was aroused by these papers, not only because rare earth spectra are being analyzed, but because of the general applicability of our experimental techniques in producing the spectra.

Elastic Analysis of Stress Conditions in a Reduction Bomb (Task III Replacement Pressure Vessel Model-1302) (open access)

Elastic Analysis of Stress Conditions in a Reduction Bomb (Task III Replacement Pressure Vessel Model-1302)

Several failures have occurred in reduction bombs used in metal production operations. A test program is being initiated to evaluate new metals for the construction of the bomb. In the test program, a tensile specimen is cycled through temperatures simulating operating temperatures, and the time to rupture is recorded in order to estimate the life in operation of a reduction bomb made with the candidate metal. In order to find the worst stress condition, the compressive, hoop, and bending stresses must be considered.

The Elimination of Microwave Reflections (open access)

The Elimination of Microwave Reflections

Abstract: "The reflections of microwaves from the walls of a plasma-containing vessel are studied. The probable cause of the reflections is discussed, and several suggestions are made for eliminating the reflections from the waveguide in the vessel and particularly from the pyrex vessel wall and copper tubing surrounding the pyrex. Quarter-wave-thick carbon-filled plastics or glasses having a very low vapor pressure room most promising when placed inside the pyrex cylinder. BaTiO3 appears to be an excellent material when placed outside the vacuum."

An Error Analysis for the Use of Presently Available Lunar Radio Flux Data in Broadbeam Antenna-System Measurements (open access)

An Error Analysis for the Use of Presently Available Lunar Radio Flux Data in Broadbeam Antenna-System Measurements

From introduction: Simple, precise expressions for lunar diameter, average brightness temperature, flux density, and shape factor are presented. An analysis of the relationship between these parameters and corresponding errors are included. For broadbeam (HPBW>d) antennas, results show that flux density and shape factor can be determined with errors less than 13 percent and 0.4 percent respectively at frequencies below 10 GHz. Extension of the analysis to higher frequencies is indicated.

Evaluated Neutron Cross Sections for Tritium

From foreword: Evaluation of the experimental data on the light isotopes, hydrogen through beryllium, was initiated by LASL in mid-1963. Since the data compilations available were completely inadequate for the task at hand, the tedious program of compiling and plotting was undertaken. As the work progressed an attempt was made to eliminate many of the obvious errors and inconsistencies found in the literature and existing compilations.
