Photograph of flood damage caused by overflow waters of Cottonwood River. Over 5 blocks of Hwy. 33 in Gruthrie, Oklahoma, were covered by water for 12 hours, causing approx. 100 families to leave their homes. Enormous damage was done to crops, soils, highways, bridges and other public and private property. Buildings on the left belong to the Mid-Continent Petroleum Company and tracks of the railroadf spur line are completely covered by water. Note flooded homes and yards in background.

Photograph of little bluestem at the Red Plains Experiment Station. The bluestem was established in the spring of 1940 by 1500 pounds per acre seed-hay mulch. An effort has been made to thresh the seed from material by a small Allis-Chalmers combine. The hay contained considerable moisture, thus the threshed material contained considerable seed. Application was made broadcast on badly eroded sandy loam soil which had previously been cropped to cotton and grain sorghum. After spreading, the material was immediately rolled with a cultipacker. About 10 inches of the surface soilwas removed from the de-surfaced area in 1929 when the experiment was started. This area has been planted to continuous cotton with rows up an down the slope. Photograph of old vegetation at the Red Plains Experiment Station. The old vegetation, after moving mature grass plants, provided a mulch which reduces erosion. This mulch creates a silt deposit and attention is called to the young grss seedlings which are emerging. This is important on badly eroded abandoned areas which are being revegetated. OK-8349.
