A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Parramore Post No. 57, Abilene, Texas, from Allen Wight, Touchstone, Wight, Gormley & Touchstone, Dallas, Texas, dated January 20, 1941. Wight confirms that he is available to speak at the meeting and is "by no means a famous man" but, complying with the request by Carswell for a personal sketch, details his background: Born in 1889, a great grandson of Lyman Wight, who brought a colony to Texas in the days of the Republic; graduated Austin College in 1909 and spent 1912-1913 in Panama in the service of the Isthmian Canal Commission then engaged in building the canal; graduated the University of Texas (in Law) in 1915 and practiced law under Ellis Douthit in Sweetwater 1915-1917. "I went to the First Officers' Training Camp at Leon Springs in 1917; was commissioned captain, assigned to the Regular Army, going Overseas with the First Trench Mortar Battalion, which was engaged as Infantry at Chateau Thierry; operated two batteries of French Artillery at St. Miheil; and both operated as Infantry and used its Mortars in the Argonne. Miller advises Carswell that he is enclosing a copy of the letter which he is writing to Dr. Jeff Davis. He advises that the letter might be of interest since Carswell phoned yesterday afternoon. The attached letter is written to Dr. Jeff Davis, Executive Secretary, United Texas Drys from E. J. Miller, Judge, 35th Judicial District, Brownwood, Texas dated July 16, 1941. Miller reports on the proceedings regarding Ellison vs. Texas Liquor Board, advises to await the action of the Court of Civil Appeals and gives a brief itinerary of his travel and work to date and for the next two weeks requesting further remittance as soon as it may be convenient.

Davis advises Riddle that Judge Miller has taken the case. Davis has directed Brother Moore to contact Miller and "let him get busy on the mandamus proceedings".

A letter addressed to Judge C. M. Caldwell, Abilene, Texas, from Jeff Davis, Executive Secretary, Unted Texas Drys, dated June 2, 1941. Davis discusses the injunction suit expected against the enforcement of the bill just passed and quotes from a telegram received from Judge C. A. Paxton, Chief Supervisor of the Texas Liquor Control Board, advising that injunction was not applicable to this phase of the law.

Davis advises Carswell of the Senate refusal in the confirmation of Dr. Bradfield as Chairman, therefore, they are requesting the Governor to appoint Senator Thomas B. Love.

Davis expresses his appreciation for the letter advising him of the support of Carswell's Senator for Dr. Bradfield's confirmation. Davis touches on an exciting event and promises that he will send a self-explanatory letter regarding "a calvacade of youth to Austin" requesting that Carswell get Abilene's support.

Davis supplies a list of names, as requested by Carswell, of key men in the District and advises that Dr. Walter H. McKenzie of University Baptist Church in Austin be their official representative to the Legislature.

Davis discusses the strategy of the campaign to be used in church services advising that the temperance question should be presented in an educational way. Handwritten postscript on right edge of page advises that Davis will send a copy of the letter as requested by Carswell. The reverse side includes notes handwritten by Carswell for a sermon regarding action which should be taken against the liquor market.

Davis asks Carswell to write or wire his Senator in reference to the liquor traffic bringing pressure to defeat the confirmation of the appointment of Dr. W. D. Bradfield as Chairman of the Texas Liquor Control Board.

Davis discusses raising funds to employ legal assistance to secure mandamus proceedings on the bill. The Drug store people offered Senator Love $2700 to take their case—he declined.

A letter written to Dr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Jeff Davis, Executive Secretary, United Texas Drys, dated March 8, 1941. Davis acknowledges his receipt of the letter of February 28 from Carswell and replies regarding the cancellation of medical licenses of doctors who are specializing in liquor prescriptions stating that he doubts it can be done under the present law. He confides regarding the liquor committee and the potential support of a bill, the appointment of a committee to work with the legal staff of the Texas Liquor Control Board and his belief of the chance for constructive legislation.

A letter to T. N. Carswell from Jeff Davis, Executive Secretary, United Texas Drys dated March 11, 1941. Davis asks if Carswell will attend the State Brotherhood Convention and requests that Carswell delegate two or three of his men to represent him if he cannot be there. He advises that he will be staying at the San Jacinto Hotel in Houston or to write him at the office.
