[Obituaries for James Irvin Guthrie and Sarah Ann McKinley]
Obituaries for James Irvin Guthrie and Sarah Ann McKinley. Guthrie, a veteran of the Mexican War, died of pneumonia at his home in Sumner County, Tennessee at the age of 77. At the time of his death, Guthrie had been married to his wife, Lizzie, for 50 years. He was survived by his wife and three of his children children. Guthrie was known as a very religious man, and was one of the wealthiest men in the county. Sarah Ann McKinley, wife of W. J. McKinley, died after a long illness at the age of 62. She was survived by her husband and two children.

[Letter from Travis Winham to C. B. Moore, September 25, 1882]
Travis left Sherman with Miss Dora and dropped her off with her family. He took the train to visit Bettie Emerson, who was in Eurkea Springs, Arkansas. He is amazed at how big Fort Worth is. He met up with Charley Moore, whose family was in town. He was very thankful for Charley being kind and courteous. He then went to Dallas and between Fort Worth and Dallas he believes that Dallas will be The City in north east Texas. While waiting at the depot he met George Wilson. Mr Hubbard arrived with Debra Collins and Jack's daughters entertained her. Travis thinks Jack is lucky with his family. He met Uncle Sam Moore and all of his children. He called on Bettie Henry several times. He did not see much of Tom Benton. He thanks Charles and Henry Moore and George Wilson, for their hospitality. He hopes to send love to everyone and thanks for the wonderful time he had.

This is a letter from the Charles B. Moore Collection. it is written by Sally Thornhill and is addressed to Mary Ann Moore and the White's. In this letter, Thornhill informs her kin on the going-on in Goodlettsville, TN. The news includes: a discussion about her correspondences, an apology for not writing a quick reply to Moore and White, a discussion about the grippe outbreak and news about those who are sick with pneumonia, a dialogue about Bailey Love's death, a dialogue about the mud and how it makes the agricultural work much harder, news about her weaving project, a discussion about traveling to see family in Nashville, and updates on the prices of meat and an aside on the production of eggs this winter. She closes the letter by sending love and well-wishes to all.

Interview with James F. Brede, dentist and U.S. Army Air Forces veteran. The interview includes his personal experiences in World War II as a B-17 co-pilot with the 8th Air Force in the European Theater, his childhood in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943, preliminary training in Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas, his active service with the 379th Bomb Group in Kimbolton, England, combat experience in 35 missions, return to the U.S. and continued military service as a flight instructor in Lakeland, Florida and Wichita Falls, Texas, as well as the return to civilian life, marriage, dental school under the G.I. Bill, reenlistment in the Air Force as a dentist, his deployment to Korea, his discharge from the Air Force, and the establishment of his dental practice and experiences since retirement. The interview includes an appendix with a copy of his book.

Interview with Louise Young and Vivienne Armstrong, longtime activists in the Dallas lesbian community. The interview includes Armstrong's personal experiences of childhood in Knoxville, Tennessee, New Jersey, and California, as well as her decision to study nursing and settle in Denver, Colorado, and her coming out narrative. The interview also includes Young's personal experiences of childhood in Ada, Oklahoma, her education at East Central State University and the University of Colorado, and her coming out narrative. They talk about their meeting and early relationship, give descriptions of Denver's gay and lesbian communities, their involvement with various groups such as the Daughters of Bilitis and Gay Liberation Front, their decision to move to Dallas, their involvement with groups such as the National Organization for Women and Dallas Gay Political Caucus/Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance in various political campaigns, and Young's career at Texas Instruments and Raytheon and efforts to create more equitable human resources policies from within the corporations. Additionally, Armstrong and Young talk about the effects of the HIV-AIDS crisis on Dallas's gay and lesbian communities, their 2008 marriage, relationships with family members, and secrets to a long relationship.

Aquatic Heterotrophic Bacteria Active in the Biotransformation of Anthracene and Pentachlorophenol
Dominant genera of bacteria were isolated from three river waters during anthracene and pentachlorophenol biotransformation studies. The genera Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Micrococcus, Chromobacterium, Alcaligenes, Azomonos, Bacillus, and Flavobacterium were capable of biotransforming one or both of these compounds. These isolates were subjected to further biotransformation tests, including river water and a basal salt medium with and without additional glucose. The results of these experiments were evaluated statistically. It was concluded that only a limited number of the bacteria identified were able to transform these chemicals in river water. The addition of glucose to the growth medium significantly affected the biotransformation of these chemicals. It was also determined that the size of the initial bacterial population is not a factor in determining whether biotransformation of anthracene or pentachlorophenol can occur.
