Color Preferences of Children in a Dallas Public School (open access)

Color Preferences of Children in a Dallas Public School

The problem of this study examines two questions which were posed. First, would color preferences of children in the N.W. Harllee School of the Dallas Independent School District be the same as those found in other studies of color preferences of elementary school children? Second, would there be differences in choices made by low academic aptitude groups and high academic aptitude groups? In an attempt to answer these questions, a series of tests was devised and administered to children grades IV through VII.

A Conceptual Validation Study of the Rorschach Indicators of Creativity (open access)

A Conceptual Validation Study of the Rorschach Indicators of Creativity

The major theoretical position of this study was that the cognitive functioning of the creative individual, as compared with the non-creative normal, is characterized by the greater availability of mature operations as these operations are defined by the Rorschach. It was assumed that the "creative individual" is free to use his imaginal processes to enrich his perception of the world. This study recognized that the perception of good Gestalten of the world is a function of the perceiver, his needs, defense mechanisms, integration, and the characteristics of the stimulus-field. When the stimulus is ambiguous, as it is in the Rorschach, the perceiver has to draw on his own resources more heavily than if the stimulus was structured.

The Diagnostic Potential of Subtest Score Variability in the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (open access)

The Diagnostic Potential of Subtest Score Variability in the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children

This study was concerned with testing two hypotheses frequently made in the interpretation of performance on the Children's Scale. The first hypothesis is that maladjustment is directly related to the amount of scatter and the second stresses that the specificity of maladjustment may be determined by the pattern of successes and failures.

The Effects of Common Electrolytes on Growth and Development of Selected Species of Aquatic Actinomycetes (open access)

The Effects of Common Electrolytes on Growth and Development of Selected Species of Aquatic Actinomycetes

The role that aquatic actinomycetes play, in the production of tastes and odors in water supplies has been investigated since 1948. The ability of these organisms to produce by-products in lakes and streams, which renders the water unpalatable, is of considerable public health importance. It is desirable that the waterworks industry has as much information as possible concerning the factors that contribute to the growth of these organisms. Since it appears that the aquatic actinomycetes may be isolated from most fresh-water sources, the problem of diversified environments and nutritional requirements offers an excellent field of investigation. The fresh-waters of the world contain variable quantities of electrolytes that may determine in part the biological activity of these organisms. The unsolved questions in this instance are concerned with the electrolytes present and their quantitative effects on the growth and development of these forms.

Gustav Holst as a Choral Composer: His Life, Factors Influencing His Compositions, His Place in English Music, and a Consideration of the Principal Stylistic Elements of His Choral Music (open access)

Gustav Holst as a Choral Composer: His Life, Factors Influencing His Compositions, His Place in English Music, and a Consideration of the Principal Stylistic Elements of His Choral Music

"An amiable personality, not himself an unusually passionate man, HoIst has excited more violent passions than any other contemporary English composer. How difficult he is to assess as a creative artist is perhaps indicated by the extraordinary fluctuations in his reputation." For a number of years he was completely unknown and ignored, living a quiet and unhurried life as an obscure teacher. Then with a momentary flash, after outstanding works such as "The Planets," and the "Ode to Death," he was caught up in a wave of public approval that made him, for a time, the recipient of national and even international honors. He was awarded the gold medal by the Royal Philharmonic Society, was made a Fellow of the Royal Col.ege of Music, and was offered honorary degrees by American universities.

Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Governors (open access)

Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Governors

One facet of the problem of state rights within the Confederacy is revealed through a study of the relations between President Davis and the war governors. As a means of investigating those relationships this study considers their attempts to solve several major problems. This work seeks to discover the degree of co-operation which existed between the President and governors and to establish what effect this co-operation or lack of it had on the failure of the states to support many important central government policies. It also seeks to determine what influence those relationships had on the outcome of the war.

Metabolism of Hydrocortisone by X-Irradiated Rat Liver Tissue as Determined by the Porter-Silber Chromagen Method

The present study may be considered endocrinological and radiobiological in nature. The endocrinology phase was concerned with studying the changes in endocrine function following the application of a stress agent. X-irradiation was chosen as the stressor in order to determine any difference in effect of this stressor from others which have been studied, e. g. heat, cold, metabolic poisons. Liver slices taken from rats at various time intervals following whole body X-irradiation were tested for their ability to metabolize hydrocortisone from a Krebs-Ringer solution.
