Determination of chlorate in potassium perchlorate pyrotechnic material by specific ion electrode (open access)

Determination of chlorate in potassium perchlorate pyrotechnic material by specific ion electrode

A method for the determination of chlorate ion in potassium perchlorate was developed. The analytical method utilized a reduction of the chlorate ion to the chloride ion with ferrous ammonium sulfate. The chloride ions produced by this reduction step were then determined with a specific ion electrode technique. The amount of chlorate ion was determined by calculating how much chlorate ion was represented by the analyzed chloride ion making an appropriate adjustment for the amount of free chloride ion found in the potassium perchlorate and deionized water.

Determination of plutonium isotopic composition at sub-picogram levels. [Measurement of Pu-239, -240, -241, and -242 by. cap alpha. and mass spectroscopy] (open access)

Determination of plutonium isotopic composition at sub-picogram levels. [Measurement of Pu-239, -240, -241, and -242 by. cap alpha. and mass spectroscopy]

A method was developed for the determination of plutonium isotopic composition at the sub-picogram level. Investigations of mass spectral backgrounds and of means of concentrating and purifying sample plutonium were conducted. Isotopic measurements were made by alpha energy analysis and mass spectrometric analysis. A technique for evaluating mass spectral background with a plutonium spike enriched in the mass 239 isotope to 99.98 atom percent is described. A combined alpha energy-mass analysis procedure for the determination of isotopic composition on a single sample mount is reported. The data presented demonstrate that sources of environmentally occurring plutonium could be differentiated by isotopic composition analysis with the developed method even at sub-picogram levels.

Free radicals in biological energy conversion: EPR studies of model systems. Final report. [Mechanism of chlorophyll participation in photosynthesis] (open access)

Free radicals in biological energy conversion: EPR studies of model systems. Final report. [Mechanism of chlorophyll participation in photosynthesis]

Energy conversion in photosynthesis is known to proceed via light-induced one-electron transfer reactions involving chlorophyll and electron donors and acceptors. Although the chemical identities of all of the components have not as yet been elucidated, considerable evidence has been accumulated which points to quinones (Q) as primary electron acceptors in both green plants and bacterial photosynthesis. Furthermore, it has been established that the initial photoprocess leads to the formation of a chlorophyll cation radical (C./sup +/). The research described in this report has as its goal the elucidation of the molecular-electronic mechanism of chlorophyll participation in photosynthesis. The following reactions have been observed: (a) Photoproduction of C./sup +/ in solution in the absence of added electron acceptors. This is a low quantum yield reaction which proceeds via the lowest excited singlet state. Bacteriochlorophyll also undergoes this reaction, whereas pheophytin does not. (b) One-electron phototransfer between the chlorophyll lowest triplet state and quinones to yield a radical pair (C./sup +/ - Q./sup +/). This may either recombine or separate. The C./sup +/ formed upon separation is unstable and reacts with hydroxylic compounds to regenerate chlorophyll. The Q./sup -/ species partly reacts with oxidized solvent and partly disproportionates. Both bacteriochlorophyll and pheophytin …

Investigation and definition of parameters associated with testing geopressure water: An Interim Report, June 1, 1975--August 31, 1976 (open access)

Investigation and definition of parameters associated with testing geopressure water: An Interim Report, June 1, 1975--August 31, 1976

Prior to the initiation of this project, considerable literature had appeared in technical journals, particularly geological journals, describing the potential value of the energy contained in hot geopressured waters along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast. The geographic region of interest was identified as the area between Brownsville and Pensacola, approximately 200 miles wide and 750 miles long and therefore containing about 150,000 square miles of surface area. The resource was estimated as lying at depths between 5,000 and 25,000 feet. Although many descriptions of this resource had been written, not much experimental data were available regarding the actual analyses of these waters, especially the methane content. ERDA Geothermal division sponsored the current project to find out the precise analysis of the waters in the geopressured zone in a specific South Louisiana shut in gas well. This information was desired as a prelude to additional resource development projects. If the experimental results of this project were negative, doubts would be raised that there should be serious attempts at other development projects. If the results were positive (i.e., the waters were saturated with methane suggested by hydrogeological theory of this region) then ERDA would feel encouraged to proceed with larger scale …

Marine pastures: a by-product of large (100 megawatt or larger) floating ocean-thermal power plants. Final report (open access)

Marine pastures: a by-product of large (100 megawatt or larger) floating ocean-thermal power plants. Final report

The potential biological productivity of an open-sea mariculture system utilizing the deep-sea water discharged from an ocean-thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant was investigated. In a series of land-based studies, surface water was used to inoculate deep water and the primary production of the resultant blooms was investigated. Each cubic meter of deep water can produce approximately 2.34 g of phytoplankton protein, and that an OTEC plant discharging deep water at a rate of 4.5 x 10/sup 4/ m/sup 3/ min/sup -1/ could produce 5.3 x 10/sup 7/ kg of phytoplankton protein per 350-day year. A series of land-based shellfish studies indicated that, when fed at a constant rate of 1.83 x 10/sup -3/ g of protein per second per 70-140 g of whole wet weight, the clam, Tapes japonica, could convert the phytoplankton protein-nitrogen into shellfish meat protein-nitrogen with an efficiency of about 33 per cent. Total potential wet meat weight production from an OTEC plant pumping 4.5 x 10/sup 4/ m/sup 3/ min/sup -1/ is approximately 4.14 x 10/sup 8/ kg for a 350-day year. Various factors affecting the feasibility of open-sea mariculture are discussed. It is recommended that future work concentrate on a technical and economic analysis. (WDM)
