Cycling and Compartmentalizing of Radionuclides in Northern Alaskan Lichen Communities. (open access)

Cycling and Compartmentalizing of Radionuclides in Northern Alaskan Lichen Communities.

Cycling of cesium-137 and other fallout radionuclides in natural lichen communities of Northern Alaska was studied by periodic sampling on a year-round basis during the period 1964-1969. Maximum concentrations usually occurred during summer months and minima during winter months. Vertical strata of lichens, humus and soil taken at those times showed pronounced seasonal shifting of radionuclides between community components. These data partially account for the sudden increase in cesium-137 body burdens of northern Alaskan caribou during spring months of each year and have important implications in the Eskimo populations dependent upon the caribou for basic food.

Cycling of Stable Cs in a Desert Ecosystem. (open access)

Cycling of Stable Cs in a Desert Ecosystem.

Contents of stable Cs in several compartments of desert ecosystems represented at the Nevada Test Site have been determined by neutron activation. Potassium in the same compartments has also been determined and Cs:K discrimination under natural conditions have been evaluated. From compartment sizes some estimates have bee made on the rates of Cs cycling through the systems. The rates were low but the stable Cs was circulating. Copartments studied include soil, several different plant species, arthropods, reptiles and mammals. The contents of Cs within compartment were in the nanogram per g of dry weight range. There appeared to be a progressive narrowing of the K/Cs ratio going from plants to reptiles and mammals. The addition of stable Cs as CsCl to a soil obtained from the Nevada Test Site resulted in leaf contents in Atriplex canescens of 0.0279, 0.580, 5.15, and 24.0 ppm per g of dry weight for application rates of 2, 5, 20, and 50 ppm repectively.

Determination of the Phases of Electromagnetic Scattering Amplitudes From Experimental Data. (open access)

Determination of the Phases of Electromagnetic Scattering Amplitudes From Experimental Data.

The scattering of electromagnetic waves by systems of unknown charge distribution is considered, with the aim of establishing whether the phase of the scattered radiation (relative to incident one) can be computered theoretically from experimentally obtainable data, such as the intensity and the polarization of the scattered wave. The problem is to determine the phases of the scattering amplitude tensor from these data, and we show that this can be done by employing the unitarity relation of classical electromagnetic scattering theory. In particular, the following results are established, subject to certain restrictions on the magnitude of the intensity data.

The detonation electric effect as applied to the MC-2453 driver subassembly. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971 (open access)

The detonation electric effect as applied to the MC-2453 driver subassembly. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

The detonation electric effect has been used for the purpose of measuring the change in transit time through the temperature range of {minus}45 to +165 F, in the MC-2453 driver subassembly. Ionization switches were applied to an additional sample of subassemblies in order to compare the transit time as measured by the detonation of electric effect and the ionization switches. Results of these tests are included in this report.

The detonation electric effect has been used to measure transit times of the MC-2453 driver subassemblies at 185 F, 212 F and room temperature after the units were subjected to a temperature of 232 F. The test procedure and the results are included in this report.

Detonation sphere. Quarterly report, April--June, 1971 (open access)

Detonation sphere. Quarterly report, April--June, 1971

The final HE test for the fiscal year was conducted in the 4-foot detonation sphere in May. A 200 g charge of 2-4-6 trinitrotoluene (1 1/2-inch diameter x 4 1/2-inch long) was initiated. On initiation, the TNT charge failed to detonate but instead partial deflagration of the HE took place. The ensuing pressure rise (54 torr vs. {approximately} 120 torr expected) implied a partial detonation; nevertheless, sampling and evaluation at the detonation products was continued. After removal of the products, the sphere was opened for inspection. The interior of the sphere was covered with a heavy carbon deposit adhering to a viscous film. Closer observation revealed granules of TNT embedded in the residual layer and also smeared on the surfaces of the involved hardware. Scrubbing with soap and water had no effect on the film; consequently, all the contamination was removed with acetone. Of the related hardware, only the copper cylinder suffered any damage. The cylinder was not fragmented; however, the internal diameter (1 1/2-inch) was found to have been enlarged by {le} 0.450 inch. The partitioned stainless steel tube suffered no distortion although the sections were propelled against the sphere wall. The data obtained for this test along with …

Development of Advanced LMFBR Fuels.

The goals of this program are to investigate the properties and behavior of those U- and Pu-based ceramic fuels that we term conductors such as the mononitrides, carbonitrides, ad monocarbides - and to compare their potential as liquid-metal fast breeder feactor (LMFBR) fuel with tha of (U,Pu)O2, which by comparison is an insulator.

Development of PEX explosives: Solid-liquid phase diagrams of energetic mixes. Quarterly report, July--September, 1971

The solid-liquid phase diagrams of various binary mixtures of FEFO, BDNPA, EDNP and BDNPF are being studied. Temperatures at which a 0.025-inch probe penetrated the samples were measured. It appears that the samples had not crystallized but solidified into a glass.

Developments in High-Temperature Design Criteria. (open access)

Developments in High-Temperature Design Criteria.

In the last two years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of more sophisticated design methods and criteria for use in elevated-temperature design. Stimulus for this effort has been largely a result of the needs of the Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor program (LMFBR). Preparation of rational design rules has been limited by a lack of knowledge of material behavior and a general lack of analytical methods capable of predicting stresses and deformations in a complex structure under time-dependent loading conditions. In this paper the time-dependent failure modes upon which relevant elevated temperature design rules must be based are discussed, and criteria being developed to preclude failure in these modes are reviewed.
