Stress Corrosion of Type 304 Stainless Steel in Simulated Superheat Reactor Environments. [Part] 1. Informal Aec Research and Develoment Report 568-Tio-2

A fuel jacket failure that occurred in May 1961 in the Type 304 stainless steel clad fuel element exposed in the Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor superheated steam loop (SADE) was attributed to chloride stress corrosion cracking. In order to better understand the failure, a test program was carried out to try to reproduce the rapid stress corrosion attack in the simulated superheat reactor environment of the CL-1 superheat facility. The methods of corrosion testing under heat transfer conditions reported previously were modified: to apply a longitudinal stress on the test sheaths to produce a 0.1 per cent elongation in 1000 hours; to increase the chloride content of the moisture carryover with the steam by increasing the chloride in the recirculating water to 1.5 ppm; and to expose the solids deposits to various metal temperatures. After 1000 hours of exposure, no significant attack was noted on the test sheaths. The test procedures were further altered to simulate the significant amount of SADE fuel element exposure to saturated steam at varying temperatures with little to no superheat being generated. A 776-hour total exposure was carried out with the test conditions cycled several times. The entrance heater (calculated metal temperature during normal operation …

The DIII-D summary contribution to the final INTOR workshop (open access)

The DIII-D summary contribution to the final INTOR workshop

In SIII-D, good H-mode confinement has been obtained with up to 6 MW of neutral-beam injection (NBI). In this report we summarize the essential features of divertor operation for DIII-D H-mode plasma. Briefly, our measurements show that: Large edge density and temperarture gradients are obtained with scale lengths of a few cm at the midplane; In the steady state, approximately 10-20% of the input power is deposited on the divertor plates in a region that is peaked on the separatrix and extends radially over )approx equal) 2-4 cm at the outboard intercept. More power (2:1) reaches the outboard intercept than the inboard; Low electron temperature (less than or equal to20eV) and high density (n/sub e//sup div/ )approx equal) n/sub e//sup main/ greater than or equal to 3-10 )times)10/sup 19/ m/sup -3/ at the divertor plates indicate that DIII-D obtains a high-recycling divertor during H-mode. DEGAS neutral transport modeling is consistent with these results; The duration of good H-mode confinement is limited by Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) rather than increasing impurity radiation; The dominant impurities, C and Ni are concentrated in the edge plasma (ra greater than or equal to 0.5) for I/sub p/ greater than or equal to 1 MA; …

North Stanley Polymer Demonstration Project. First annual report (open access)

North Stanley Polymer Demonstration Project. First annual report

The objective of the project is to demonstrate the efficiency and economics of recovering tertiary oil from a highly heterogenous reservoir (which has been successfully waterflooded, but is nearing the economic limit) by injecting a polymer slug of tapered concentrations to improve the sweep efficiency of the reservoir. In preparation for the injection of polymer, a major review of the mechanical condition of all producing and injection wells prompted a number of remedial workovers. As a preventive measure, all injection wells were equipped with plastic coated tubing, and packers were set approximately 100 ft above the Burbank sand to prevent the possibility of subsequent casing leaks thieving off injected polymer. Where necessary, producing wells were worked over to insure maximum producing capability. The remedial work was done at the start of the project to insure that any production increase resulting from the remedial work was recognized prior to the start of polymer injection. The necessary surface facility changes were made to allow the injection of fresh water only and to provide for the disposal of 35,000 BPD of produced water. Polymer storage and blending facilities were constructed in such a manner as to allow control of the mixing process with …

The application of the ADSP-21020 40-bit floating point DSP microprocessor in a digital Doppler radar (open access)

The application of the ADSP-21020 40-bit floating point DSP microprocessor in a digital Doppler radar

A continuous wave doppler radar system has been designed which is portable, easily deployable and can be remotely controlled. The system is immune to ground clutter and is used for wind speed detection and direction determination. Nearly real time digital signal processing is performed by an Analog Devices ADSP-21020, a 40-bit floating point Digital Signal Processing (DSP) microprocessor. This paper provides an overview of the design of the system including the radio frequency (RF) to digital interface. The various DSP detection algorithms are discussed and compared to system performance and sensitivity. Finally, DSP performance is compared to the performance of an earlier system using Analog Device's ADSP-2100. 6 refs.

Alternative theories of oil-inventory management and government policy options (open access)

Alternative theories of oil-inventory management and government policy options

Four alternative theories of oil inventory management and their implication for the level of private petroleum stockpiling are explored. The assumptions made were: that the product market for oil is competitive and that the capital market through which investments in oil stockpiles are financed is efficient. It is assumed that these conditions are expected to prevail even in the event of a supply interruption. These assumptions constitute the benchmark theory of oil inventory management. Variations on this theme provide the alternative theories of inventory behavior explored.

Quarterly technical progress report No. 2, December 20-March 19, 1982. Second quarterly report on the effect of rapid heating rate on coal nitrogen and sulfur release

A laser pyrolysis technique is applied to the investigation of the effects of heating rate on release of coal-bound sulfur and nitrogen. An experimental system characterization and calibration has been completed. A detailed documentation was prepared describing the 3-color pyrometer and the data analysis technique. The coal particle feed system has been calibrated to provide accurate mass flow rate at pre-selected particle velocities. The first batch of samples submitted for chemical analysis will be used for the determination of kinetics parameters at a high heating rate (approximately equal to 10/sup 6/ K/s). The coal used presently is a Montana Rosebud. Two other coals are available; one is ILL No. 6 (through EERC) which will need to be pulverized and the second is a Pitt. hv-A (through KVB). It was confirmed that sieve and drag size distribution of coal differ significantly, and that particle shape effects may be significant in the modelling of particle dynamics.

HOPI: on-line injection optimization program (open access)

HOPI: on-line injection optimization program

A method of matching the beam from the 200 MeV linac to the AGS without the necessity of making emittance measurements is presented. An on-line computer program written on the PDP10 computer performs the matching by modifying independently the horizontal and vertical emittance. Experimental results show success with this method, which can be applied to any matching section.
