A pulse stretching unit was constructed which takes pulses from a standard linear pulse amplifier and provides an output signal suitable for driving a recording head."

A report which describes a number of experiments conducted to compare the effects of different methods of surface preparation on x-ray diffraction patterns of uranium obtained by the spectrometer technique.

From introduction: "The present paper deals with a classical calculation in which some of the meson effects can be included to all orders in the meson-nucleon coupling coupling constant, in particular those having to do with the gyration of the nucleon spin and isotopic spin. Such a treatment leads to results qualitatively different from the weak coupling calculations."

Abstract: "The results of the investigation of three methods of obtaining transverse stability in linear accelerators for ions are presented and discussed. For electric or magnetic quadrupole focusing the range of stable operation, oscillation amplitudes, and the operation of an actual grid is analyzed from measurements of the field distribution. Finally, the formulas applicable to focusing by axial magnetic lenses are presented."

Report discussing the properties of a plasma held in a steady state by a magnetic field. Properties such as "electric and magnetic fields, current density, particle density, and macroscopic velocity" are determined analytically by assuming uniform temperature throughout the plasma.

Introduction: A proposal for using an energetic neutral deuteron beam for injection into a mirror machine has been made by Eugene Lauer. This report describes an experimental attempt to produce a large neutral deuteron beam. The beam from the NTA ion source was passed through a target of hydrogen gas where the charge exchange mechanics produced a beam of energetic neutral deuterium atoms.

From abstract: "The reactivity effects of one and of two highly enriched fuel rods placed into a natural uranium lattice thermal pile are investigated according to the small source model."

Abstract: "The deuterium plasma which is ejected by a 6000-ampere pulsed current through a rail-type spark source has a yield in the forward direction which is a factor of 5 to 10 greater than that in the perpendicular direction. This effect is believed to be due to the magnetic propulsion of the plasma."

Abstract: An investigation of ionization by shock waves in hydrogen has been initiated. The shock waves are produced in a 1-inch diameter glass pipe by a high-voltage spark at one end. Variables which will influence attainment of the maximum degree of ionization and ion temperature are described. Spectroscopic methods of measuring ion density and temperature are outlined, and improvements in the design of the shock tube are discussed.

Report discussing waste line methods for separation plants at Hanford Works. A discussion of existing and proposed methods, including methods of protection for lines are included.

Thesis discussing the study of deuterons produced at wide angles to a beam of 300 Mev neutrons and a beam of 300 Mev protons. It was observed that the deuterons are formed by "a two step process in which the incident nucleon, or its collision partner, is scattered and then picks up in the same nucleus." Some tritons are also observed, and it is thought that they are formed by the same process as the deuterons. From these findings, the author concludes that "for heavy nuclei, there is a nuclear skin rich in neutrons."

Abstract: The complete development of an effective process for recovery of the uranium in the residues from distillation of used Kinney and diffusion pump oils or similar oils is described. After considerable study and experimentation with several methods, a successful procedure has been developed. The recommended procedure embodies solution of the residues in trichlorethylene followed by extraction with nitric acid. Recovery of uranium is better than 99 percent effective and the method may be applied directly to contaminated oils as well as to their distillation residues.

This report describes the flow meter for measuring air-flow rate through special hoods that allow the decrease in flow rate.

Report discussing a thermal type flow meter which was adapted for metering anydrous hydrofluoric acid at low flow rates. Corrosive gases, which are not appropriate for handling in standard type rotameters or orifice meters, are also suitable for this thermal type flow meter.

Abstract: "A simple detector for determining the presence of UF6 in a stream of HF, UF4, and dissociated NH3 is described. The basic detection element is a sensitized piece of carbon rod. The unit has proved satisfactory on production equipment."

Abstract: "Since the first report on the use of amines as uranium extractants (ORNL-1734) over eighty additional organo-nitrogen compounds have been examined for their ability to extract uranium from aqueous solutions, particularly sulfate solutions, of the types usually encountered in uranium ore processing. As before, the more promising of these (as well as other compounds previously reported) have been examined further with respect to other characteristics essential to practical application, i.e., reagent loss to the aqueous phase, compatibility with practicable diluents, influence of commonly present anions, reagent stability, sufficient selectivity for uranium, adequate phase separation properties, compatibility with practicable stripping methods, etc. The potential cost and availability of the reagents tested, i.e., certain secondary and tertiary amines, have shown even greater promise as practicable extraction agents than many of the promising compounds previously tested. In addition to the work with sulfate liquors, cursory studies have been made of uranium extraction from fluoride and sulfate-fluoride solutions. Extractions of other metals from sulfate liquors, i.e., titanium and thorium, have been briefly examined."
