Proposed irradiation of substandard fuel elements. Phase 2 (open access)

Proposed irradiation of substandard fuel elements. Phase 2

The reference letter outlined an initial proposal for irradiating limited categories of substandard fuel elements in the upstream positions of the reactor process tubes. As Phase 2 of this program, a comprehensive study has been made of all current fuel reject categories with respect to use in the upstream low rupture potential positions. This report describes additional ``reject`` fuel categories, the estimated cost savings, rupture potential, and procedures for identifying and handling pieces to fulfill the combined requirements of Phase 1 and 2 of this program. Future methods for grading fuel elements to reduce rupture potential in the downstream reactor positions are also outlined in this report.

Potential for process tube burnout during transient conditions (open access)

Potential for process tube burnout during transient conditions

This report is an interpretation of data (flow, pressure, temperatures within a process tube during events affecting single tubes) as applied to the most severe (rapid) K-reactor transients which are credible. Analyses indicate that no fuel channel burnout will result from a BPA power loss to the process pumps.

NUCLEAR AEROSPACE SAFETY PROBLEMS (open access)

NUCLEAR AEROSPACE SAFETY PROBLEMS

Safety problems that have arisen in the conquest of space and are of a nuclear origin are discussed. Space radiation such as cosmic radiation, geomagnetically trapped corpuscular radiation, and solar flare radiation and radiations inherent in nuclear auxilliary power systems are considered. Problems created by the use of nuclear propulsion systems are emphasized. Launch pad problems and core disposal are discussed (M.C.G.)

Tory II-C off-design performance (open access)

Tory II-C off-design performance

This memorandum reports the performance of TORY II-C at off-design altitudes and Mach numbers. Inlet pressure recovery has been varied with Mach number, reasonable values for a real inlet having been chosen. Nozzle throat area and exit area have been fixed at the design values. Hence this study can be used, in conjunction with missile drag data, to construct a flight envelope.
