Reggeon Field Theory and the phases of QCD (open access)

Reggeon Field Theory and the phases of QCD

We propose a Reggeon Field Theory phase diagram involving Sub-critical and Super-critical Pomeron behavior and the Expanding Disc. We describe the derivation of Reggeon Field Theory from QCD using infra-red analysis of the reggeon diagrams of the spontaneously broken theory. Matching the Reggeon Field Theory phase-diagram to that of lattice QCD with many fermions has significant implications for the chiral properties of continuum QCD when the number of flavors is less than the maximum allowed by asymptotic freedom. 19 refs., 7 figs.

SVI: Super-VIOR interface routines (open access)

SVI: Super-VIOR interface routines

This document describes a set of routines for a VME DMA module called the Super-VIOR. The Super-VIOR interface routines, also called the SVI routines, are written in PILS and run under a Valet-plus system. These routines enable a program to set up, execute, and monitor DMA operations. The Super-VIOR Interface Routines are written in PILS, a high level language similar to BASIC and Pascal which is powerful and fast enough for most applications. One of the most powerful features of the Valet/PILS system is the ability to set up exception vectors and exception handlers directly in a program. This feature is used to handle interrupts from the MC68450 (a 4 channel, 16 bit DMA controller) and the interface's front panel. This document is divided into ten sections, the first being the introduction. The remaining sections detail the interface registers, channel initiation, polling and interrupts, status reporting, front panel interrupts, the configuration routines, the operation control routines, the status reporting routines, and special comments on the MC68450.

Tests of prototype SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) magnets (open access)

Tests of prototype SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) magnets

Results are presented from tests of the third full scale development dipole magnet for the Superconducting Super Collider and from a retest of a 4.5 m model magnet of the same design mounted in an SSC cryostat. The 4.5 m magnet shows consistent quench performance between its original tests in boiling liquid helium in a vertical dewar and the current tests in forced flow helium in a horizontal cryostat. Little or no retraining is observed over several thermal cycles. The full length magnet requires 12 quenches to train to its short sample limit of 6800 A and displays a reasonably stable quench plateau following training. This represents a great improvement over the performance of the first two full length magnets. Data are presented on quench behavior as a function of current and temperature and on azimuthal and longitudinal loading of the coil by the support structure. 14 refs., 7 figs.

Functions of the cask maintenance facility: A white paper (open access)

Functions of the cask maintenance facility: A white paper

The shipping cask systems are the mobile components of the transportation system, designed to safely transport spent nuclear fuel between different facilities under both normal and accident conditions. The cask system will consist of the heavily shielded cask, the cask transport vehicle (truck trailer or railcar), and any associated ancillary equipment (covers, impact limiters, lifting devices, etc.). The cask and certain parts of the cask system must be operated within the limits imposed by a certificate of compliance (COC) granted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Each cask system must transport spent fuel safely during the life of the system. To maintain the operational effectiveness and safety of the cask systems, a cask maintenance facility (CMF) will be included as an integral part of the transportation system. The planning activity of the transportation system and the design effort of the CMF require that the functions to be performed by the CMF be explicitly defined. The purpose of this paper is to (1) define the potential transportation system functions to be performed at the CMF; (2) examine the impact of this functional definition on the overall transportation system; (3) identify any unresolved issues concerning the interaction of the CMF with other …

Kinetic theory of radiation effects (open access)

Kinetic theory of radiation effects

To help achieve the quantitative and mechanistic understanding of these processes, the kinetic theory of radiation effects has been developed in the DOE basic energy sciences radiation effects and fusion reactor materials programs, as well as in corresponding efforts in other countries. This discipline grapples with a very wide range of phenomena and draws on numerous sub-fields of theory such as defect physics, diffusion, elasticity, chemical reaction rates, phase transformations and thermodynamics. The theory is cast in a mathematical framework of continuum dynamics. Issues particularly relevant to the present inquiry can be viewed from the standpoints of applications of the theory and areas requiring further progress.

A simple cantilevered mirror for focussing synchrotron radiation (open access)

A simple cantilevered mirror for focussing synchrotron radiation

A large cantilevered mirror was constructed to focus the vertical divergence from a synchrotron radiation source. The advantages of this mirror are its compactness, simple bending device, simplicity of construction, and good thermal contact to structures outside the vacuum. The central portion of the mirror is supported with variable loading springs to reduce gravitational sag. The figure and thermal stability of the mirror have proven to be excellent, though the focusing is limited by the roughness of the mirror-surface. This paper describes the design, construction, and performance of the mirror.
