Silicon Ribbon Growth by a Capillary Action Shaping Technique (open access)

Silicon Ribbon Growth by a Capillary Action Shaping Technique

The crystal-growth method under investigation is a capillary action shaping technique. Meniscus shaping for the desired ribbon geometry occurs at the vertex of a wettable die. As ribbon growth depletes the melt meniscus, capillary .action. supplies replacement material. In this report, a new capillary die design is described. It represents a departure from the die types used for edge-defined, film-fed growth, in that the bounding edges of the die top are not parallel or concentric with the growing ribbon. The new dies allow a higher melt meniscus with concomitant improvements in surface smoothness and freedom from SiC surface particles, which can degrade perfection. Also in this reporting period, ribbons were grown for delivery to JPL. Twenty ribbons and 30 ribbon samples were shipped. Detailed dimensional characteristics of most ribbons grown during the past year are presented. Finally, our initial progress in the growth of 38-mm (1-1/2-inch)-wide ribbons, up to 46 cm in length, is reported.

Tritium interactions of potential importance to fusion reactor systems: technology requirements (open access)

Tritium interactions of potential importance to fusion reactor systems: technology requirements

The tritium technology requirements created by the controlled thermonuclear research program to develop a demonstration fusion power reactor by the year 2000 are reviewed. It is found that the majority of the technological advances which are needed to ensure adequate tritium containment in a tritium breeding power reactor need to be demonstrated on a pilot scale by approximately 1983, so that they may be incorporated into EPR-II, the second of two planned experimental power reactors. The most important advances include development of containment materials with permeabilities to tritium well below measured values for stainless steel; large scale, low inventory deuterium-tritium separation systems; and improved monitoring and assay systems. There are less critical requirements for information about the effects of tritium and helium on the mechanical properties of materials, the effects of tritium on biological systems, and data on physical and chemical properties of tritium. Substantial progress needs to be made on these problems early enough to permit possible solutions to be tested on EPR-I. In addition, major improvements in tritium handling equipment are required for EPR-I. Those technological problems for which solutions have not yet been demonstrated by EPR-II must be solved by 1989 if they are to be assured …

Multiheteromacrocycles that complex metal ions. Second progress report, 1 May 1975--30 April 1976

Objective is to develop cyclic and polycyclic host organic compounds to complex and lipophilize metal ions. Macrorings were synthesized: (OCH$sub 2$ CH$sub 2$ O CH$sub 2$COCH$sub 2$ COCH$sub 2$)$sub 2$ and (OCH$sub 2$ CH$sub 2$ O CH$sub 2$ COCH$sub 2$ COCH$sub 2$)$sub 3$. The smaller ring complexes divalent metals 10$sup 1+9$ times better than the open-chain model CH$sub 3$ O CH$sub 2$ CO CH$sub 2$ COCH$sub 2$ O CH$sub 3$, and the order in which metal ions are complexed is Cu$sup 2+$, UO$sub 2$$sup 2+$ greater than Ni$sup 2+$ greater than Fe$sup 2+$, Co$sup 2+$, Zn$sup 2+$, Cd$sup 2+$ greater than Mn$sup 2+$. The UO$sub 2$$sup 2+$ and Cu$sup 2+$ complexes were isolated and characterized. The larger ring complexes trivalent metals 10/sup 0.9-1.7/ times better than the open- chain model compound, and the order is La$sup 3+$, Ce$sup 3+$ greater than Cr$sup 3+$. Five other macrocycles were also synthesized, and their binding constants with Na, K, NH$sub 4$, and Cs picrates were measured. Six compounds containing one macroring and two inward-pointing ArOH or ArOCH$sub 3$ groups were also prepared and tested for binding of Li, Na, K, Rb, and NH$sub 4$ picrates. Racemic compounds containing two binaphthyls and its sulfur …

Thin film CdS/Cu/sub 2/S solar cells by chemical spraying (open access)

Thin film CdS/Cu/sub 2/S solar cells by chemical spraying

This project involves further work on a process developed to make very thin film CdS/Cu/sub 2/S solar cells. The process is adapted to the float glass process and consists of spraying suitable chemicals on a moving ribbon of glass which floats on a bath of molten metal. The spraying produces the necessary thin films (with suitable optical and electrical properties) of SnO/sub 2/, CdS and Cu/sub 2/S. The CdS films produced are two to three microns thick, thus conserving the use of cadmium. The estimated cost per peak watt is approximately 7 cents (1975 costs) at 5 percent efficiency and an output of 37.6 x 10/sup 6/ square meters annually. The cells are blackwall cells. A float glass plant modified for the process is shown schematically. Research progress is described.

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Fourth quarterly report, March 20--June 20, 1976 (open access)

Kinetics and mechanism of desulfurization and denitrogenation of coal-derived liquids. Fourth quarterly report, March 20--June 20, 1976

The high-pressure liquid-phase flow microreactors are operating satisfactorily in both hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation studies after minor modifications to allow in situ sulfiding. The hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene occurs by a simple network giving only H/sub 2/S and biphenyl as primary reaction products. The reaction network for quinoline hydrodenitrogenation has been determined, and a kinetic model developed to allow quantitative determination of the first-order kinetic constants for each of the steps in the reaction network. The effect of H/sub 2/S concentration, hydrogen pressure, quinoline concentration, and catalyst type on the rate of the various steps in the reaction network has been determined. Aged catalyst from the 1.1 in ID Synthoil reactor showed considerable amounts of mineral matter on it, but not as much FeS/sub x/ as on the catalyst from the /sup 5///sub 16/ in. ID unit. Moment analysis for the evaluation of pulse microreactor data has been completed.

Conceptual design of a 10MW regenerative isobutane geothermal power plant. Technical report No. 18 (open access)

Conceptual design of a 10MW regenerative isobutane geothermal power plant. Technical report No. 18

At present, there are basically three different systems for converting energy in geothermal fluid into power: vapor-flashing system, total flow system, and binary system. A comparison of the power production processes was made on the basis of work output in Kwh per 1000 pounds of geothermal fluid for self flowing wells with wellhead pressure of 100 psia and for wells with downhole pumps. For simplicity, the assumptions were made that the enthalpy of the geothermal fluid in the reservoir is approximately equal to that at the wellhead, that the thermodynamic properties of geothermal fluid may be approximated by those of water, and that the pressure effects on the properties of fluid are negligible. The results showed that the performance of the two-stage vapor-flashing system is not appreciably improved by using a downhole pump. The total flow system is simple, but its success depends mainly on the development of a reliable machine with sufficiently high thermal efficiency. The regenerative isobutane system is impractical, if the geothermal fluid temperature is below 380/sup 0/F. But, when the brine temperatures range from 485 to 600/sup 0/F, the regenerative isobutane system with downhole pump exhibits superior performance as compared to two-stage vapor-flashing system, basic isobutane …
