Landrum Gully Control

Banks were sloped and channel solid sodded to Bermuda in spring of 1941. Drainage area from cultivated field approx. 60 A. Mr. Landrum (in photograph) says this gully was very active and threatening his cultivated land but since establishment of Bermuda erosion has been practically stabilized."

Photograph of flood water damage. Sonny Flack, operator, surveying the damage done to freshly cut alfalfa in a Cane Creek Bottom field. This hay is no longer of any use and must be picked up and hauled away to prevent it from killing the growing alfalfa which it is resting on. Approximately 25 tons of excellent hay were lost from this overflow, the second in 1958. Cane Creek watershed is not protected from flooding. OK-631-2.

Photograph of Upland alfalfa for soil management, William Widnay farm. Alfalfa is an excellent legume for soil building and cover. Mr. Widney uses alfalfa on upland (III - ?) in his conservation crop rotation. This alfalfa was seeded in the fall of 1952. For a nurse crop, ½ bushel of wheat per acre was cross-drilled in the wide spaced rows (every other row drilled). Wheat made 20 bushels per acre. Utilization of alfalfa has been a spring hay crop, seed crop in the summer and fall pastures. He has another planting of alfalfa and plans to plow this one up in the fall. His plans are for the alfalfa to be in a 3-year rotation. He has been a soil district cooperator since 1948. OK-279-12.
