Some Transonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Model Similar to the McDonnell F3H-2N Airplane (open access)

Some Transonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Model Similar to the McDonnell F3H-2N Airplane

Report discussing testing of a model of the McDonnell F3H-2N to determine its pitch-up and buffet boundaries and its longitudinal stability and control data obtainable with the pulse-tail technique. Stability was found to be less at low trim angles of attack than at high trim angles of attack up to a point. The buffet boundary was not obtainable through this testing.

Altitude-performance and Reynolds number investigation of centrifugal-flow-compressor turbojet engine (open access)

Altitude-performance and Reynolds number investigation of centrifugal-flow-compressor turbojet engine

From Introduction: "Altitude-chamber and wind-tunnel investigations of the performance of turbojet engines such as those reported in references 1 to 4 have shown that the conventional correction factors fail to generalize the engine performance variables at high altitudes. An investigation was therefore made at the NACA Lewis laboratory to determine the altitude performance of the J33-A-23 turbojet engine and to demonstrate the magnitude of departure of actual altitude performance from that predicted from sea-level performance."

Combustion performance evaluation of magnesium-hydrocarbon slurry blends in a simulated tail-pipe burner (open access)

Combustion performance evaluation of magnesium-hydrocarbon slurry blends in a simulated tail-pipe burner

Report presenting an experimental investigation to determine the combustion properties of several magnesium-hydrocarbon slurry blends and to indicate the feasibility of the application of slurry-type fuels to high-speed aircraft. High-concentration magnesium slurries showed large improvements in combustion stability and tail-pipe-burner net thrust.

NACA investigation of fuel performance in piston-type engines (open access)

NACA investigation of fuel performance in piston-type engines

This report is a compilation of many of the pertinent research data acquired by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics on fuel performance in piston engines. The original data for this compilation are contained in many separate NACA reports which have in the present report been assembled in logical chapters that summarize the main conclusions of the various investigations. Complete details of each investigation are not included in this summary; however, such details may be found, in the original reports cited at the end of each chapter.

Rates of fuel discharge as affected by the design of fuel-injection systems for internal-combustion engines (open access)

Rates of fuel discharge as affected by the design of fuel-injection systems for internal-combustion engines

Using the method of weighing fuel collected in a receiver during a definite interval of the injection period, rates of discharge were determined, and the effects noted, when various changes were made in a fuel-injection system. The injection system consisted primarily of a by-pass controlled fuel pump and an automatic injection valve. The variables of the system studied were the pump speed, pump-throttle setting, discharge-orifice diameter, injection-valve opening and closing pressures, and injection-tube length and diameter.

Compilation of Test Data on 111 Free-Spinning Airplane Models Tested in the Langley 15-Foot and 20-Foot Free-Spinning Tunnels (open access)

Compilation of Test Data on 111 Free-Spinning Airplane Models Tested in the Langley 15-Foot and 20-Foot Free-Spinning Tunnels

"A compilation of free-spinning-airplane model data on the spin and recovery characteristics of 111 airplanes is presented. These data were previously published in separate memorandum reports and were obtained from free-spinning tests in the Langley 15-foot and the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnels. The model test data presented include the steady-spin and recovery characteristics of each model for various combinations of aileron and elevator deflections and for various loadings and dimensional configurations" (p. 1).

Approximate analysis of effects of large deflections and initial twist on torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to thermal stresses (open access)

Approximate analysis of effects of large deflections and initial twist on torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to thermal stresses

From Summary: "An approximate analysis of the nonlinear effects of initial twist and large deflections on the torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to a nonuniform temperature distribution is presented. The Von Karman large-deflection equations are satisfied through the use of a variational principle. The results show that initial twist and applied moments can have significant effects on the changes in stiffness produced by nonuniform heating, particularly in the region of the buckling temperature difference. Results calculated by this approximate analysis are in satisfactory agreement with measured torsional deformations and changes in natural frequency."
