Preliminary Tests of a Burner for Ram-Jet Applications

"Preliminary tests have been made of a small burner to meet the requirements for application to supersonic ram jets. The principal requirements were taken as: (1) efficient combustion in a high-velocity air stream, (2) utilization for combustion of only a small fraction of the air passing through the unit, (3) low resistance to air flow, (4) simple construction, and (5) light weight. Tests of a small burner were carried to stream velocities of nearly 150 feet per second and fuel rates such that one-eighth to one-fourth of the total air was involved in combustion" (p. 1).

Langley full-scale-tunnel investigation of the factors affecting the static lateral-stability characteristics of a typical fighter-type airplane

"The factors that affect the rate of change of rolling moment with yaw of a typical fighter-type airplane were investigated in the Langley full-scale tunnel on a typical fighter-type airplane. Eight representative flight conditions were investigated in detail. The separate effects of propeller operation, of the wing-fuselage combination, and of the vertical tail to the effective dihedral of the airplane in each condition were determined. The results of the tests showed that for the airplane with the propeller removed, the wing-fuselage combination had positive dihedral effect which increased considerably with increasing angle of attack for all conditions" (p. 1).

The model test data presented include the steady-spin and recovery characteristics of each model for various combinations of aileron and elevator deflections and for various loadings and dimensional configurations" (p. 1).

The performance at inlet pressure of 21 inches mercury absolute and inlet temperature of 538 R for the 10-stage axial-flow X24C-2 compressor from the X24C-2 turbojet engine was investigated. the peak adiabatic temperature-rise efficiency for a given speed generally occurred at values of pressure coefficient fairly close to 0.35.For this compressor, the efficiency data at various speeds could be correlated on two converging curves by the use of a polytropic loss factor derived.

A Summary Report on the Effects of Mach Number on the Span Load Distribution on Wings of Several Models

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the change in spanwise load distribution at high Mach numbers, which is of considerable interest because lateral movement of the center of lift affects the trim, stability, and structural factors of safety of an airplane. The data is not sufficient to permit isolation of the effects of changes in wing configuration, but in a majority of cases, the tests reveal a tendency for the center of lift to shift outboard with increasing Mach number.

On June 23, 1947, a hole was discovered in the earthen fill near the T Plant R-19 stairwell directly above the path followed by the underground waste lines from the canyon. Jetting of all canyon wastes to the 241 Buildings was stopped and the canyon process shut down. This report discusses repair and characterization procedures for the soils and waste line pipe.

Combustion-efficiency investigation of special fuels in single tubular-type combustor at simulated altitude conditions

Report presenting a combustion-efficiency investigation of 10 special straight-run distillate fuels in an individual tubular-type combustor unit of a 14-unit assembly at two simulated engine operating conditions. These distillates were obtained from various crude oils and consisted of hydrocarbon mixtures with distillations temperature varying from 93 to 690 degrees Fahrenheit. Comparison of temperature measurements obtained from two locations in the exhaust duct showed that under certain operating conditions the flame extended beyond the turbine position.

"An experimental investigation was made of a preloaded spring-tab flutter model to determine the effects on flutter speed of aspect ratio, tab frequency, and preloaded spring constant. The rudder was mass-balanced, and the flutter mode studied was essentially one of three degrees of freedom (fin bending coupled with rudder and tab oscillations). Inasmuch as the spring was preloaded, the tab-spring system was a nonlinear one" (p. 1).

"Low-speed wind-tunnel tests of a l/8 scale model of the Republic XP-91 airplane were made to determine its low-speed characteristics and the relative merits of a vee and a conventional tail on the model. The results of the tests showed that for the same amount of longitudinal and directional stability the conventional tail gave less roll due to sideslip than did the vee tail. The directional stability of the model was considered inadequate for both the vee and conventional tails; however, increasing the area and aspect ratio of the conventional vertical tail provided adequate directional stability" (p. 1).

The Founding of the Brookhaven National Laboratory - Associated Universities, Inc.

At the end of the war it became apparent that the teamwork of government and scientific institutions, which had been so effective in wartime work, must somehow be perpetuated in order to insure the continued progress of nuclear science in peace time. The enormous expense of the tools needed to pursue the next steps in this research -- nuclear reactors and high energy accelerators -- and the shortage of scientifically trained personnel pointed towards the establishment of a cooperative laboratory. Such a laboratory, using government funds, could carry out a comprehensive research program that would benefit the many interested research groups throughout the country. As a result of the wartime programs under the Manhattan District, centers of research in nuclear science were already active at the Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, California, at Los Alamos in New Mexico, at the Clinton Laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and at the Argonne Laboratory in Chicago. No analogous nuclear research laboratories, however, had developed in the Northeast, and since so much of the nation's scientific talent and industrial activities are concentrated in the northeastern states, it was proposed that a new laboratory be established near New York City. The Metabolism of Curium in the RAT

The heaviest of the known elements is curium, which was recently discovered by Seaborg and his associates. This new element can be produced by the alpha particle transmutation of plutonium by the following reaction: {sub 94}Pu{sup 239} + {sub 2}He{sup 4} {yields} {sub 96}Cm{sup 242} + {sub 0}N{sup 1} This isotope of curium is radioactive and decays by the emission of an alpha particle to form plutonium 238 which, in turn, is also radioactive. Curium 242 has a half-life of 150 days, and its radioactive daughter, plutonium 238, has a half-life of 50 years. This isotope of plutonium decays by the emission of an alpha particle to form uranium 234 which has a half-life of 233,000 years. Shortly after the organization of the Atomic Energy Project, it became apparent that formidable problems would be presented as the result of the release of nuclear energy. One of the most urgent of these was the hazard presented by the production of large quantities of the radio-elements created by the fission of uranium and the coincidental formation of neptunium and plutonium. Application of Theodorsen's theory to propeller design

A theoretical analysis is presented for obtaining, by use of Theodorsen's propeller theory, the load distribution along a propeller radius to give the optimum propeller efficiency for any design condition. The efficiencies realized by designing for the optimum load distribution are given in graphs, and the optimum efficiency for any design condition may be read directly from the graph without any laborious calculations. Examples are included to illustrate the method of obtaining the optimum load distributions for both single-rotating and dual-rotating propellers.

Records show that difficulty has been encountered with the discharge of two tubes in B Pile, twelve in the D Pile, and fifteen in the F Pile during the period from initial start-up until March 15, 1948. In sixteen cases the tubes have been replaced, six of the tubes which were in the fringe have been made air tubes, four did not warrant replacement, and three are to be replaced in the future. General statistics for these twenty-nine tubes are presented with additional details in this report.
