Project for laboratory study for removal of organic sulfur from coal. Quarterly technical progress report (open access)

Project for laboratory study for removal of organic sulfur from coal. Quarterly technical progress report

The Gravimelt Process was extended to the desulfurization of ordinary mine-cleaned Kentucky No. 11 coal obtained from the Tennessee Valley Authority. Eight process runs were made resulting in reduction of the sulfur content from a starting 2.7 lbs S/10/sup 6/ Btu to a mean of 0.475 lbs S/10/sup 6/ Btu, (0.95 lbs SO/sub 2//10/sup 6/ Btu) for an average 82% sulfur reduction. The effect of utilization of molten sodium hydroxide alone vs molten mixed potassium and sodium hydroxide was investigated for this coal; sulfur reduction averaged 84% for the mixed melt and 78% for the use of sodium hydroxide alone. A double extraction with sodium hydroxide resulted in a reduction in total sulfur to 0.3 lbs S/10/sup 6/ Btu which is an 89% reduction. In a series of experiments, the melt was reused three times on fresh samples of coal, always giving the same amount of sulfur reduction. Extraction of the desulfurized Kentucky No. 11 coals with an additional dilute sulfuric acid wash reduced the ash content of the coal from 7.9% to a level of 0.3%, thus providing a solid hydrocarbon fuel similar in both ash and sulfur content to a medium grade fuel oil. Multiple experimentation on high …

Reactor Development Program Progress Report, September 1961

BS>Data from examination of blade-type control rods which were used in BORAX are discussed. Operation and maintenance of EBWR is outlined. In work on Borax V, modifications for easier installation of reactor and components is outlined followed by discussion of superheat fuel element development, and fabrication of various reactor components. Borax reactor design is also reported along with information on development and testing. In research on sodiumcooled reactors, activities are summarized in the LPR III and LPR IV programs along with developmental work on EBR I and II. Studies on reactor safety are reported and activities in a program of nuclear technology and general support are outlined. (J.R.D.)

Generating technology assessment. Phase I work plan, Task 1 report (open access)

Generating technology assessment. Phase I work plan, Task 1 report

A plan of work outlining information to assess electric generating technologies is presented. Projections are made of realistic and understandable engineering and cost assessments of nonnuclear electrical generating technologies. A computer-based method of producing such engineering and cost estimates for use by EIA's Coal and Electric Power Analysis Division is to be developed and implemented. Technologies and processes to be assessed are: all nonnuclear conventional and nonconventional (coal gasification, advanced combustion turbines, atmospheric fluidized bed combustion, fuel cells, geothermal, solar thermal and photovoltaics, biomass conversion to electricity, ocean thermal, wind, and MHD). Engineering specifications recommended for determination are listed. Compatibility of the technologies are to be assessed with EIA models: MEFS, LEAP, and NCM.

Integrated dry NO sub x /SO sub 2 emissions control system (open access)

Integrated dry NO sub x /SO sub 2 emissions control system

This project's goal is to demonstrate the removal up to 70% of the NO{sub x} and 70% of the SO{sub 2} emissions from coal fired utility boilers. It will establish an alternative emissions control technology integrating a combination of several processes, while minimizing capital expenditures and limiting waste production to dry solids that are handled with conventional ash removal equipment. These processes include low-NO{sub x} burners, NO{sub x} ports and urea injection for NO{sub x} control, sodium or calcium based sorbent injection for SO{sub 2} control, and flue gas humidification to enhance the reactivity of the SO{sub 2} control compound.

Reactor Development Program Progress Report, September 1962 (open access)

Reactor Development Program Progress Report, September 1962

Progress is reported on development of liquid metal and water cooled reactors. Details are included concerning the EBWR, Borax V, ZPR-III, ZPR-VI, AFSR, EBR-I, EBR-II, and FARET. Developments in general reactor technology are reported in applied reactor physics, reactor fuel and components development, heat engineering, and chemical separations. Advanced systems research and development was devoted to the Argonne Advanced Research Reactor and a conduction- cooled reactor to substitute for isotope heat sources. Safety studies are reported on thermal and fast reactors. (J.R.D.)

ASHRAE Standard 62-1989: Energy, Cost, and Program Implications. (open access)

ASHRAE Standard 62-1989: Energy, Cost, and Program Implications.

ASHRAE Standard 62-1989 (Standard 62-89) Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality'' is the new heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry consensus for ventilation air in commercial buildings. Bonneville Power Administration (Bonneville) references ASHRAE Standard 62-81 (the predecessor to Standard 62-89) in their current environmental documents for required ventilation rates. Through its use, it had become evident to Bonneville that Standard 62-81 needed interpretation. Now that the revised Standard (Standard 62-89) is available, its usefulness needs to be evaluated. Based on current information and public comment, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) revised Standard 62-1981 to Standard 62-89. Bonneville's study estimated the energy and cost implications of ASHRAE Standard 62-89 using simulations based on DOE-2.1D, a computer simulation program which estimates building use hourly as a function of building characteristics and climatic location. Ten types of prototypical commercial buildings used by Bonneville for load forecasting purposes were examined: Large and Small Office, Large and Small Retail, Restaurant, Warehouse, Hospital, Hotel, School, and Grocery. These building characterizations are based on survey and energy metering data and represent average or typical construction and operation practices and mechanical system types. Prototypical building ventilation rates were varied in five steps to …

Microcomputer-based pellet trajectory guidance system for the Baseball II-T experiment (open access)

Microcomputer-based pellet trajectory guidance system for the Baseball II-T experiment

In the Baseball II-T experiment a pellet generation and injection system was employed to place frozen ammonia pellets at the focus of a laser beam. The original trajectory guidance system suffered a number of problems that limited its accuracy and complicated the operation of the system. These problems were related to variable charge-to-mass ratios, timing, pellet discrimination, and computer speed. The original system design was improved by changes to the sensing components, microcomputer, and trajectory guidance system.

Safety-analysis report for packaging (SARP) general-purpose heat-source module 750-Watt shipping container (open access)

Safety-analysis report for packaging (SARP) general-purpose heat-source module 750-Watt shipping container

The SARP includes discussions of structural integrity, thermal resistance, radiation shielding and radiological safety, nuclear criticality safety, and quality control. Extensive tests and evaluations were performed to show that the container will function effectively with respect to all required standards and when subjected to normal transportation conditions and the sequence of four hypothetical accident conditions (free drop, puncture, thermal, and water immersion). In addition, a steady state temperature profile and radiation profile were measured using two heat sources that very closely resemble the GPHS. This gave an excellent representation of the GPHS temperature and radiation profile. A nuclear criticality safety analysis determined that all safety requirements are met.
