On July 14, 1949, and office memorandum was written about operations of a reprocessing building on the Hanford Site being suspended due to the mishandling of some plutonium powder. The letter describes the process of decontamination of the building surfaces, and the ventilation of the rooms of that building. It also describes the problem with the ventilation fans due to increased temperature and pressures.

A comparison of theoretical and experimental loading on a 63 degrees swept-back wing at supersonic speeds

Report presenting the pressure distribution over a highly swept wing at supersonic speeds to provide data for a comparison of measured and predicted loadings. The wing for this investigation had 63 degrees of sweepback of the leading edge, an aspect ratio of 3.5, and a taper ratio of 0.25. Over the regions influenced by the wing tip and trailing edge, the effects of viscosity apparently are responsible for the poorer agreement between theory and experiment.

The Development of Equipment for the Continuous Burning and Leaching of Ground Carbon

Equipment was developed for the continuous burning and leaching of ground carbon in order to recover uranium for the proposed Closed Cycle Beta Process. The burning apparatus consisted of a vertical tube with a grate to support the carbon. An uppdraft of air was used to support combustion. The burning rate of the apparatus was 500 grams of carbon per hour; combustion averaged over 98% complete. The leacher consisted of a heated nitric acid bath divided in four compartments through which ground carbon was pushed by rotating paddles. The acid flowed, by gravity, countercurrent to the carbon.

The Distribution of the Positive-Negative Ratio for Mesons

Positive and negative mesons produced in a common target in the cyclotron are received in two photographic plates. In the magnetic field of the cyclotron, negatives are deflected to one plate, positives to the other. The mesons must pass through an absorber before entering the plates in order to be observable.

"An additional series of high-speed wind-tunnel tests of a modified 0.17-scale model of the McDonnell XF2H-1 airplane was conducted to evaluate the effects of a reduction in the thickness-to-chord ratios of the tail planes, the displacement of the horizontal tail relative to the vertical tail, and the extension of the trailing edge of the wing. Two tail-intersection fairings designed to improve the flow at the tail were also tested. The pitching-moment characteristics of the model were improved slightly by the use of the thinner tail sections" (p. 1).

Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of several leading-edge modifications on the maximum lift and pitching-moment characteristics on a large-scale 45 degree swept-forward wing. A full-span leading-edge flap deflected 30 degrees down tended to give the largest gain of maximum lift. Results regarding the plain leading-edge flaps and cambered nose are explored.

Report presenting an investigation to determine the aerodynamic characteristics in sideslip of a triangular wing of aspect ratio 2.04 in combination with a body of fineness ratio 12.5 and a vertical tail surface. The body combined with the triangular plan-form wing caused no significant changes in the lift characteristics of the wing and only a 1-percent decrease in the static margin. Results regarding the longitudinal characteristics, lateral and directional characteristics, and estimation of tail and rudder effectiveness are provided.

Investigation of a thin straight wing of aspect ratio 4 by the NACA wing-flow method: Lift and pitching-moment characteristics of the wing alone

This report presents measurements of the lift and pitching-moment characteristics of a straight wing of aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.5, having a symmetrical double-wedge airfoil section with a maximum thickness of 4.4-percent chord. The tests were conducted in the Mach number range 0.51 to 1.20, Reynolds numbers 380,000 to 660,000, by the NACA wing-flow method. The results are compared with theory and with wind-tunnel tests of a similar model. It is indicated that in the Mach number range 0.82 to 1.00 the model surface, profile, and test Reynolds number all would be very important considerations in any attempt to study or predict full-scale characteristics from small-model tests.

Ailerons with triangular and parallelogram plan forms with a maximum chord of 0.625 wing chord and a flat-plat profile were investigated. The aerodynamic characteristics in pitch and lateral control characteristics are included.

P Division monthly report, December 1948

This progress report discusses activities at the P Division for the month of December 1948. All piles operated at 275 megawatts throughout the month except for the outages listed under Area activities in this report. An unscheduled power outage occurred in the 300 Area on December 2. No difficulties were encountered except for the lost operating time. A total of 103 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. Operating schedules in the 300 Area were reduced from a six-day week to a five-day week on December 20 because of the favorable status of the inventory of canned slugs. All processes are now working one shift a day except Canning and Machining which work two shifts a day.

P Division monthly report, March 1949

This progress report discusses activities at P Division for the month of March, 1949. All piles operated at 275 megawatts throughout the month except for the outages listed under Area Activities in this report. The average time operating efficiency''was 91.4%. A total of 47 tons of metal was discharged from the piles during the month. During the month, 16.6 tons of alpha-rolled, triple-dipped metal were discharged without difficulty at a nominal concentration of 320 megawatts day (MWD) per ton. Inspection of selected tubes of this material indicated that exposures at this level are satisfactory. In view of these results the programs of stepwise increases in concentration will be continued, with the next test tonnages being discharged at a nominal concentration of 360 MWD per ton. The nominal monthly production rate of acceptable canned pieces was reduced from 90 tons to 60 tons on March 28. This curtailment of production was possible in view of the favorable inventory of slugs available for charging DR and H piles.

Emphasis will necessarily be given to consideration of cost, timing, use of minimum buildings and equipment, and the obtaining of optimum production time cycles.
