Database of average-power damage thresholds at 1064 nm (open access)

Database of average-power damage thresholds at 1064 nm

We have completed a database of average-power, laser-induced, damage thresholds at 1064 nm on a variety of materials. Measurements were made with a newly constructed laser to provide design input for moderate and high average-power laser projects. The measurements were conducted with 16-ns pulses at pulse-repetition frequencies ranging from 6 to 120 Hz. Samples were typically irradiated for time ranging from a fraction of a second up to 5 minutes (36,000 shots). We tested seven categories of samples which included antireflective coatings, high reflectors, polarizers, single and multiple layers of the same material, bare and overcoated metal surfaces, bare polished surfaces, and bulk materials. The measured damage threshold ranged from < 1 J/cm/sup 2/ for some metals to > 46 J/cm/sup 2/ for a bare polished glass substrate. 4 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.

Characteristics of multimuon events from fourth generation quarks at the SSC (superconducting super collider) (open access)

Characteristics of multimuon events from fourth generation quarks at the SSC (superconducting super collider)

Multimuon events can be a distinctive signature for pair production of t-quarks or 4th generation quarks at the SSC. In this paper we address aspects of the multimuon event topology relevant to detector design for the SSC. In particular, we discuss energy measurement, rapidity range, segmentation and the need for hadronic calorimetry in a dedicated muon detector.

Use of polarimetry to measure the current profile in MTX (open access)

Use of polarimetry to measure the current profile in MTX

It is possible in principle to measure the poloidal magnetic field profile, and hence, the profile of the plasma current measuring the change in the polarization of a sequence of microwave beams that pass through the plasma. Actual measurements of the plasma current profile would be very interesting in connection with Lower-Hybrid (or EC) current drive experiments since this would provide direct information on modification of the current profile by the application of rf power. A microwave polarimetry diagnostic on MTX as part of the microwave interferometer is being considered. This diagnostic would be constructed in collaboration with Neville Luhmann and Tony Peebles at UCLA. The diagnostic would utilize the multicord far-infrared interferometer which is designed to operate at a base wavelength of 0.185 mm. This paper reviews the understanding of the physics issues raised by this diagnostic, concurring with Luhmann and Peebles' conclusion that the polarimetry measurements would be easier at longer wavelengths. An increase of only a factor of 2 in the wavelength would make a substantial difference since the signal to be measured goes as lambda/sup 4/. Hence, in this paper operation at longer wavelengths (0.337 mm and 0.447 mm) in addition to operation at 0.119 and …

Plasma confinement calculations for TIBER-II: Final report (open access)

Plasma confinement calculations for TIBER-II: Final report

This paper compares the empirically based TIBER II design parameters against the reactor parameters of a tokamak based on a theoretical model of heat transport. The motivation behind this project is the following. The present TIBER-II design is based on an empirical scaling of confinement time tau/sub E/ known as Kaye-Goldston scaling. This empirical scaling is based on data from tokamak plasmas whose temperatures did not exceed a few keV, while the TIBER-II requires electron temperatures of 25 keV. The question, then, is whether the Kaye Goldston scaling is valid at temperatures above the range of empirical data. For this we must turn to theory. If a theoretical transport model is available that shows favorable correlation with the Kaye-Goldston scaling in the range of a few keV, then this scaling could be extrapolated to the 25 keV range required for TIBER-II. The project is divided into two parts. Part one of the project concerns the development of a transport model from plasma theory that has empirical support. Part two of the project consists of applying the transport model to the TIBER-II design. 8 refs., 3 tabs.

Investigation of materials for inert electrodes in aluminum electrodeposition cells (open access)

Investigation of materials for inert electrodes in aluminum electrodeposition cells

Work was divided into major efforts. The first was the growth and characterization of specimens; the second was Hall cell performance testing. Cathode and anode materials were the subject of investigation. Preparation of specimens included growth of single crystals and synthesis of ultra high purity powders. Special attention was paid to ferrites as they were considered to be the most promising anode materials. Ferrite anode corrosion rates were studied and the electrical conductivities of a set of copper-manganese ferrites were measured. Float Zone, Pendant Drop Cryolite Experiments were undertaken because unsatisfactory choices of candidate materials were being made on the basis of a flawed set of selection criteria applied to an incomplete and sometimes inaccurate data base. This experiment was then constructed to determine whether the apparatus used for float zone crystal growth could be adapted to make a variety of important based melts and their interactions with candidate inert anode materials. The third major topic was Non Consumable Anode (Data Base, Candidate Compositions), driven by our perception that the basis for prior selection of candidate materials was inadequate. Results are presented. 162 refs., 39 figs., 18 tabs.

Aspects of B physics (open access)

Aspects of B physics

Various aspects of weak decays are commented on. Probing of the standard model and of phenomena beyond the standard model are discussed, followed by a theoretical view of B mesons and some experimental observations on B mesons. The point is made that any data on B decay would be interesting in that it would provide powerful new constraints in analyses of the standard model and extensions thereof. (LEW)

Stratabound pathways of preferred groundwater flow: An example from the Copper Ridge Dolomite in East Tennessee (open access)

Stratabound pathways of preferred groundwater flow: An example from the Copper Ridge Dolomite in East Tennessee

The Copper Ridge Dolomite of the Upper Cambrian Knox Group underlies a site at Oak Ridge, Tennessee under consideration by the Department of Energy (DOE) for a below ground waste disposal facility. The Copper Ridge was studied for DOE to understand the influence of lithology on deep groundwater flow. Three facies types are distinguished which comprise laterally continuous, 1 to 4 m thick rock units interpreted to represent upward-shallowing depositional cycles having an apparently significant effect on groundwater flow at depth. Rock core observations indicate one of the recurring facies types is characterized by thin to medium-bedded, fine-grained dolostone with planar cryptalgal laminae and thin shaley partings. Distinctive fracturing in this facies type, that may have resulted from regional structural deformation, it considered to be responsible for weathering at depth and the development of stratabound pathways of preferred groundwater flow. In addition, geophysical data suggest that one occurrence of this weathered facies type coincides with an apparent geochemical interface at depth. Geophysical data also indicate the presence of several fluid invasion horizons, traceable outside the study area, which coincide with the unweathered occurrence of this fine-grained facies type. The subcropping of recurrent zones of preferred groundwater flow at the weathered/unweathered …

The Livermore Security Console system

The Console system contains multiple, redundant workstations that enable operator to monitor alarms, assess incidents, and dispatch field personnel. Each workstation is heavily computerized and incorporates automatic video switching and recording, integrated radio and telephone communications, and an advanced high-resolution map and incident-display system. Operation of the workstation is closely integrated with the map display system, allowing an operators to readily pan and zoom. Objects of security interest are overlaid on the map using color. Access to alarm sensor information, entry-control device status, and the closed-circuit television system is obtained by zooming into an area and selecting the appropriate icons or symbols on the maps. Control menus are overlaid on the map. Several large databases have been closely integrated with the map display system, providing access to information such as telephone numbers and building or room occupants. An expert system is currently being integrated with the map display system. Object state changes are interpreted by a rule-based inference engine. Incidents are overlaid on the map.

Old physics, new physics and colliders (open access)

Old physics, new physics and colliders

Some topics in the standard model of strong and electroweak interactions are discussed, pointing out some problems in this model and indicating how these problems are attacked in some theoretical models. A discussion of radiative corrections in the Glashow-Weinberg-Salam model is given that stresses how these corrections may be measured at LEP and the SLC. Some features of QCD are discussed which are relevant to hadron colliders. In discussing the unsolved problems of the standard model, some aspects of models in which quarks and leptons are composite particles are considered. 85 refs., 44 figs. (LEW)
