100-N Decontamination Facility Design Guide. (open access)

100-N Decontamination Facility Design Guide.

Space has been reserved near the southeast corner of the 100-N Area for the 122-N Decontamination Facility. Previous correspondence between Burns and Roe, Inc and General Electric bae discussed various facilities which might be needed in the building. The concepts of the decontamination processes are under active development by research groups at Hanford. At present, there are several workable processes known; each one has one or more fairly serious drawbacks.

The Absorption and Translocation of Several Fission Elements by Russian Thistle (open access)

The Absorption and Translocation of Several Fission Elements by Russian Thistle

Abstract: An investigation was conducted to determine the absorption and translocation of fission products by Russian thistle from a localized spot of contaminated soil. The amount and identity of the radioactive elements absorbed and translocated by the Russian thistle is given along with the location of these elements in the plants. Beta radioactivity to the amounts of 10 microcuries per gram caused no visible effects on the growth habits of sectioned material are included.

Application and Operation of the 325 Building Well Counter (open access)

Application and Operation of the 325 Building Well Counter

Well-type scintillation counters have found use in many radiochemical laboratories. A gamma scintillation well counter has been used to measure the gamma activity of liquid samples in the 325 Building counting room for about a year. This well counter has been built and calibrated so that gamma activity measurements made with it can be easily compared with measurements made with the gamma scintillation counter (GSC). The well counter is electronically identical to the present GSC and differs only in the shape of the crystal used and the physical arrangement of the lead shield. The crystal contains a well which allows a tube containing the sample to be inserted in the crystal. The physical arrangement of the detector greatly simplifies the preparation of liquid samples for activity measurement. The 325 Building well counter and its application to chemical research and plant process analysis will be discussed in the following paragraphs. An operating procedure is also included.

A Ball Holder for Coating Operations

A device has been designed which will support small spheres and cylinders in a vacuum system during a plating operation. While supporting the object to be plated, the device automatically shifts the position of the supports so that the coating is evenly distributed. This report describes the mechanism by which this motion is achieved.

Beehive and Hornet : Reactor Codes for Spherical Geometry (open access)

Beehive and Hornet : Reactor Codes for Spherical Geometry

Abstract: Beehive is a five energy group, two region, time independent spherical reactor code. It considers the problem of reactor system in which the core material is assumed to be at a higher energy (temperature) than the reflector material. The code obtains a closed solution for the critical reactor assembly by a procedure which is a logical extension of normal two group theory. The companion code, Hornet, computes the neutron fluxes for the critical assembly determined by the Beehive calculation. Both codes have been programmed for the IBM Magnetic Drum Data-Processing Machine, Type 650. The codes, together with the flow diagrams, are included with this report.

Beta Magnet Current Stability (open access)

Beta Magnet Current Stability

Abstract: A TEC regulator amplifier driving an Eaterline-Angus recording meter was used to record magnet current variations. Tests were made to determine magnet current variations. Tests were made to determine magnet current stability for currents from 500 amperes to 4000 amperes. Changes were necessary in both the TEC and GE regulators before currents below 2500 amperes could be regulated. Regulation to 0.025 percent for and hour was obtained for currents of 1000 to 4000 amperes with the TEC and GE regulators, and regulation to 0.05 percent for 500 ampere currents.

The Boron-Carbon System: Quarterly Report Number 2, August - October 1960 (open access)

The Boron-Carbon System: Quarterly Report Number 2, August - October 1960

Abstract: A definitive investigation of the boron-carbon equilibrium system is being made by X-ray diffraction, metallographic, and thermal analytical techniques. Additional baron-carbon alloys have been prepared by sintering and arc-melting compacts prepared from boron and high-purity graphite. Metallographic examinations of these alloys are in agreement with alloys previously preapred from lampblack. X-ray investigation of sintered compacts indicates that the solubility range of boron carbide extends almost to pure boron. Boron of various purities has been annealed for times up to four hours, but no structure other than beta-rhombohedral has been detected. Very high purity boron (10 ppm impurity) has been obtained for the study of allotropy and the equilibrium relationships at very dilute carbon contents.

Chemical Development Section C Monthly Progress Report August 1959

Uranium extractions from carbonate solutions were effective and phase separation rates were rapid using a new commercial quaternary extractant, Alamine 336. Extraction coefficients were approximately proportional to the quaternary concentration. Addition of -0.5 mole tridecanol/mole quaternary to the solvent gave optimum extraction efficiency and phase separation rates.

Compact Control Rod Drive Study For a Boiling Water Reactor in a T7 Tanker

The reason for initiating the compact drive study for the T7 tanker was to investigate control rod drive size, location, and removal space requirement factors and select the control rod drive mechanism which would allow optimization of the over-all size of the containment vessel. Approximately twelve mechanical/hydraulic control rod drive arrangements were considered during this study.
