Large savings in waste storage space may be realized by lowering the pH at which TBP waste is stored. Additional savings in neutralizing chemicals and operating time would also increase the monetary gain from such a process change. However, before such a change could be made, the corrosive effect of TBP waste at a lower pH on the mild steel waste storage tanks had to be determined.

The self-diffusivities of Co60 and Ni63 in cobalt--nickel solid solutions exhibit a greater activation energy below the Curie temperature (T/sub c/) than above. Values of DELTA Q = Q (ferromagnetic) -- Q (paramagnetic) are approximately equal to RT/sub c/. This observation is interpreted to indicate that the increment in activation energy arises from an increase in the formation energy of a vacancy in the ferromagnetic lattice, with the additional binding energy arising from the interaction of a spin with the Weiss field."

The definition of the Lebesgue integral is used to develop a numerical integration method in which the integral is evaluated directly from a contour plot of the function. It is useful in working from weather maps, potential surfaces, etc., but was particularly designed to assist in reducing blast diffraction space-time diagrams to simple, meaningful quantities.

From abstract: "The dissociation of acids in tertiary butyl alcohol has been studied by potentiometric, spectrophotometric, and conductimetric methods. Values for the over-all dissociation of perchloric and picric acids and several tetrabutylammonium salts were estimated by the Fuoss-Kraus treatment of conductance data. Potentiometric studies were carried out at constant ionic strength in order to minimize activity coefficient variations. An acidity scale was established from potentiometric measurements at a glass electrode, and conductance values of dissociation constants. A method was developed for the evaluation of the over-all dissociation constant of weak acids using potentiometric data for hydrogen ion activities and conductance data for the corresponding anion activities. Over-all dissociation constants are reported for perchloric acid, picric acid, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and benzoic acid. Apparent dissociation constants from potentiometric measurements at a constant ionic strength were determined for hydrobromic, nitric, hydrochloric, picric, and p-toluenesulfonic acids."

Temperature calculations have been made to aid in planning a production test for low level irradiation of the thin rectangular uranium wafers. These uranium wafers, under irradiation in the outer fringe sone, are expected to have a maximum temperature which is less than 10 C above the local water temperature.

Technical report outlining the effect of strain rate on the tensile properties of thorium. It has been found that the yield strength increases slightly with increasing strain rate, and that tensile strength increases but to a less extent. The object of the work done during the month of June has been to assure that deposition of chemically pure chromium metal by gas plating, both by itself, or as a component of nickel-chronium and/or other alloys.

Five isotopes of bismuth occur in nature. Using particle accelerators providing helium ions up to 40 Mev in energy and deuterons up to 20 Mev in energy, it was possible to produce and identify two artificial radioactive isotopes. With the advent of the 184-inch Berkeley syncho-cyclotron and its hundreds of Mev energies, it was possible to form highly neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes extending more than ten mass units below stable Bi(209).

Abstract. In order to anticipate radiation - chemical effects in solutions of active lanthanum, various solutions and suspensions containing lanthanum were irradiated with an electron beam. Separation of lanthanum from barium by the alcoholic HCl method is not rendered less efficient by radiation, although considerable gas evolution occurs. Suspensions of lanthanum as hydroxide and as ferrocyanide are not appreciably solubilized by radiation. Lanthanum oxalate is decomposed by radiation, is partially thrown into solution, and finally dissolves completely when all the excess oxalate ion in the solution has been destroyed.

Abstract: "An accurate calculation is given for the quantity which corresponds to the diffusion length in the theory of the pile. The procedure is to establish a relationship between the diffusion length and the change in thermal utilization from a pile with infinite sides to one with sides of a finite length. The calculation of this change in the thermal utilization is then carried through. Approximation to the answer and numerically exact calculations are given in the report. The results show that for radif very near the optimum values the exact diffusion length is slightly larger than the one obtained from the usual formula...However, over most of the range of radii the exact diffusion length is smaller than the approximate one."

"The effects of radiation emission on the motion of electrons in high energy synchrotrons are analyzed. The damping rates and quantum excitation of the three principal modes of oscillation are derived for strong focusing and constant gradient accelerators.
